    • Brunettes getting paid more than blondes?

A report has been unveiled that indicates brunettes earn on average £4,250 more a year than their blonde counterparts, and have more relationships.

It's a tenuous excuse for the Daily Mail to recycle lots of glitzy celebrity photos and compare famous women by their physical merits, but who am I to judge...

3,000 women were surveyed by hair colourists Schwarzkopf & Henkel and 44% per cent of those with dyed or natural brown hair said this was the shade which gave them the greatest success with the opposite sex - a 10% higher rate than blondes.

And 20 per cent of brunettes boasted of five relationships or more in the past, while only 13 per cent of blondes could say the same.

Schwarzkopf & Henkel said: "It's always assumed blondes have more fun, therefore had more success in their love lives and careers too.

"Our research shows that blondes still do have more fun but aren't taken as seriously as women with darker hair - both at work and play. Brunettes are climbing the career ladder quicker as well as having better luck in love"

Quick, quick! Get yourself down a hair salon and dye your hair for greater success! What a convenient conclusion for Schwarzkopf & Henkel, eh?

And yes, perhaps it was a slow news day for this to make it to the headlines. But if this survey reflects reality (does it?), what does that say about the way women (and men) are judged based on their looks, in work and in love? Do you think how you look really extends to how much you earn? Have you earned more and had better relationships with darker hair than blonde? Or is this survey just a tired excuse for a hair colouring company to attach some economic and social benefits to getting your hair done?

    • Ivory Coast halves government pay to cut fuel prices

The Ivory Coast government is halving the salaries of its ministers to pay for a reduction in the price of fuel. Prime Minister Guillaume Soro said the managers of state-owned companies would also have their pay cut in half, to pay for a 10% cut in fuel prices. "Having heard the people's cry from the heart, the government has decided to cut the price of fuel," Mr Soro said.

The announcement comes after a strike by public transport works in the main city Abidjan last week. On 7 July, Ivory Coast increased diesel prices by 44% and petrol prices by 29%. The government attributed the increase to rising global oil prices. Mr Soro said running costs and investments in government departments would also be cut to help cope with the extra expenditure.

Overseas trips by government members would also be reduced to a "bare minimum", he said. Escalating food prices sparked violent protests in Abidjan in March and April, when housewives took to the streets banging pots and pans, youths built burning barricades and at least one man was killed.

    • CEO pay climbs higher despite bad economy

The rich get richer, and the poor stay poor.
      -----------

NEW YORK - As the American economy slowed to a crawl and stockholders watched their money evaporate, CEO pay still chugged to yet more dizzying heights last year, an Associated Press analysis shows.

The AP review of compensation for the heads of companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index finds the median pay package added up to nearly $8.4 million. That’s a comfortable gain of about $280,000 from 2006.

The 3½ percent pay increase for CEOs came even as the landscape for both workers and shareholders darkened considerably and the economy was choked by a housing market in free fall, layoffs and soaring prices for fuel and food.

At the top of the AP list: John Thain, who took the reins of Merrill Lynch on Dec. 1, 2007. His $83 million pay package was supercharged by a signing bonus and other enticements that lured him from the New York Stock Exchange to lead the investment bank as it was suffering its worst-ever losses.

Collectively, the 10 best-paid CEOs made more than half a billion dollars last year. Yet half the members of this stratospheric club were leading companies whose profits shrank dramatically.

    • I HEART (To Hate!) CEOs

They all like PROFIT! They're all RICH! They're all ... new?

14 of the top 15 U.S. food companies have hired new CEOs in the last three years. A lot of Current posters seem to like to shoot CEOs for sport, so I thought I'd arm you all with the latest news on what strategies these new food company CEOs are implementing -- including passing on commodity costs to consumers, closing manufacturing plants, and firing workers -- for no good reason other than to pad the pockets of their shareholders.

      [Sarcasm sequence complete.]

At Charter School, Higher Teacher Pay

      By ELISSA GOOTMAN
Would six-figure salaries attract better teachers?

A New York City charter school set to open in 2009 in Washington Heights will test one of the most fundamental questions in education: Whether significantly higher pay for teachers is the key to improving schools.

The school, which will run from fifth to eighth grades, is promising to pay teachers $125,000, plus a potential bonus based on schoolwide performance. That is nearly twice as much as the average New York City public school teacher earns, roughly two and a half times the national average teacher salary and higher than the base salary of all but the most senior teachers in the most generous districts nationwide.

The school’s creator and first principal, Zeke M. Vanderhoek, contends that high salaries will lure the best teachers. He says he wants to put into practice the conclusion reached by a growing body of research: that teacher quality — not star principals, laptop computers or abundant electives — is the crucial ingredient for success.

    • The Road Out of Debt Is Longer For Ladies

Women take longer to pay off their student loans... and it's not a result of shoe shopping. This is really frustrating for me, actually. Why is it that still, in 2008, women are still not paid equally for the same job. They have to pay the same amount to get the same education as the men in their schools. And you know if women didn't have to pay as much, men would be up in arms about it. So why the double standard? Why do they lie to us?!?!?!?

Most American workers enjoy a high standard of living, certainly when compared with the wages earned by workers throughout the rest of the world. According to surveys by Payscale.com, entry-level wages for careers in this country average around $40,000 a year. If that seems low to you, take note: by completing an online college degree program, you can boost your entry-level earning power by at least another $10,000.
Here are ten tried-and-true career groups that advertise beginning earnings at -- or well above -- the $50,000 level:

The hard truth is that $53,000 a year doesn't cut it anymore in the Bay Area. Tens of thousands of working families in the region, even those with what many would consider decent-paying jobs, find a modestly comfortable standard of living is out of their reach.

A family of four in the Bay Area with two working adults must earn $77,069, equaling an hourly wage of $18.53, just to pay for basic necessities, a study released today calculates.
