"Writing Women's Lives" Conference in Santa Fe - July 21-25
Writing Women’s Lives
Not so much a writer’s conference…as a conference about writing….
The Southwest Literary Center presents its 23rd annual
Santa Fe Writers’ Conference
Join a distinguished gathering of women writers and publishing professionals for workshops, private conferences, and readings in legendary Santa Fe, New Mexico. Now in its twenty-third year, the Santa Fe Writers Conference each summer brings aspiring writers from near and far to work with accomplished and dedicated faculty and guests.
Writing Women’s Lives, the theme of the four-day conference at the Hotel St. Francis, offers varied discussions on writing, includes readings by authors as well as local literary excursions—and provides time for writing. Events related to the annual Spanish Market, held the weekend of July 26-27, are also a part of this year’s program. This year offers a rare opportunity to hear from the most accomplished women writers in New Mexico and the Southwest.
Two unusual experiences have been added to this year’s program that celebrates the Hispanic culture: participants will be treated to the joys of making tacos with the legendary Denise Chávez, author and performance artist. More than a cooking demonstration, the Taco-Rama also includes reading of passages from Chávez’s memoir, A Taco Testimony: Meditations on Family, Food and Culture.
Another hands-on learning experience is the Corridos Workshop led by Elena Díaz Bjorkquist. Corridos are Mexican folk songs full of broken hearts, daring escapes, and adventures. Bjorkquist, author of Growing Up Chicana in the Shadow of the Smokestack, will guide participants in writing their own forms of the traditional songs—with a song fest planned for later in the day. The Corridos that are written will be preformed by Consuelo Luz a Chilean-Cuban singer/songwriter during the Taco-Rama.
A key panel discussion, “What Make a Reader Care about your Story,” explores the necessity of stories and the varied forms of expression for creating a personal narrative. Authors Laura Hays, Sallie Bingham, and Julie Shigekuni discuss the common life events shared by women and how to knit together a narrative from fragments of personal history and universal experience.
Natalie Goldberg, the celebrated author of Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within, who has been conducting writing seminars for some 25 years. She will lead a session on “My Life Is a Storyline.”
Carolyn Wright’s investigative memoir of her experiences in Chile on a Fulbright Study Grant during the presidency of Salvador Allende, The Road to Isla Negra, received the PEN/Jerard Fund Award and the Crossing Boundaries Award from International Quarterly. Wright will be teaching the workshop, “When Politics Gets Personal--The Investigative Memoir in Poetry and Prose”.
Writing children’s books will be explored by award-winning local writers Nancy Wood (who is also a photographer), Barbara Beasley Murphy, and Anna Jane Hays. Susan Gonzales Abraham and Denise Gonzales Abraham, the daughters of Cecilia Gonzales Abraham who created the Cecilia books, will discuss writing for the young adult audience.
The Mystery of Writing Mysteries, Women and the Environment and A Sense of Place are other topics presented by noted writers Ellen Berkovitch, Sandra Blakeslee, Anne Hillerman, Page Lambert and Lesley Poling Kempes. A session on “Getting Published” features Leigh Haber, vice president, Rodale Press, and editorial director of Modern Times, a new imprint of Rodale.
The fee for the five day conference is $575 includes all workshops, talks and receptions. The one-day fee is $130 July 22-24, 2008 and $200 July 25, 2008 (includes lunch and margarita despedida)

Violence starts at home - It can stop with me and you
War worldwide tops the headlines.
People call for peace.
Activists remind us there can only be peace if we work for justice.
Ask where the violence begins.
Too often violence begins at home.
The violence of adults makes a devastating impact on children.
Peace begins at home.
Lao Tze said "If you want peace in the world, Make peace at home, in the family and in your own soul.
Be peace.

The New Mexico Rail Runner Express
New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is encouraging support for the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, currently serving communities between Belen and Bernalillo with stops in downtown Alberquerque, New Mexico, and adjacent communities. The project is planned to extend service and new track towards the state capitol in Santa Fe. This extension of service is expected to be in operation by late 2008, and should be a great addition for commuters and tourists alike. Although Amtrak offers rail service on the Southwest Chief route between Albuquerque and Lamy -- the nearest community to Santa Fe -- the Rail Runner will offer a direct commuter connection between the two cities and also offer an alternative to an increasingly congested highway on the I-25 corridor. SITE Santa Fe's Seventh International Biennial: Lucky Number Seven
Curator Lance Fung, who has organized the Snow Show in Finnish Lapland (2004) and exhibitions at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy (2006), is organizing SITE Santa Fe's Seventh International Biennial launching this summer from June 22 – October 26, 2008. SITE Santa Fe, a contemporary art venue in Santa Fe, New Mexico, plays host to their 7th Biennial and will feature new work created specifically for the exhibition. Fung has required that participating artists make their work by hand either on site at SITE Santa Fe or in and around the state capitol. Additionally, Fung's selection of artists culled for the Biennial are emerging young artists from around the world and have been submitted by participating arts centers and galleries including Art Tower Mito (Japan), the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (UK), and the Palais de Tokyo (France). Unlike curatorial convention at other biennials, Fung is not directing artists to work under a specific theme -- although, stipulating that artists make their work in Santa Fe could be regarded as a theme tied to location. And after the Biennial closes in October, all of the works will be destroyed. (Photo: Jori Finkel, courtesy of the International Herald Tribune, iht.com). "Patriotic Woman" Banned
Photobucket banned this painting "Patriotic Woman" by American Artist Charleen Touchette, but you can still see it on Flickr.

Patriotic Woman Banned from Photobucket
Painting the illuminated woman in red, white and blue, I was feeling fiercely patriotic.
Thinking about how sexism is draining support for Hillary Clinton for President like a cut artery. Seeing young idealistic women buying Hillary's platform when it's shortened to 3 word sound bites by a tall younger man who looks presidential in a suit the way a woman never can, I was heartbroken by how people hate smart women.
The banning of this "Patriotic Woman" painting confirms how sexist America and the world is.
Pictures of penis's are ok and lingams like obelisks are the focal point of parks and monuments throughout the world like the Washington Monument and the Obelisk at the Place de la Concorde in Paris, and television is filled with commercials about male erectile disfunction, but "Patriotic Woman" must be deleted?

Give a WOMAN a Chance for REAL CHANGE
Studying Senator Obama's record and statements make it clear that he isn't much different from other men who've said they should be president. He talks scarcity thinking about limited resources. Hillary talks expansively about American ingenuity and how there's nothing we can't do together.
I've waited all my life to be able to vote for a woman or a person of color for President.
It is disturbing that we have to choose one or the other.
A Hillary/Obama ticket would be great.
Eight years of prosperity and peace with Hillary as Prez,
followed by another eight years with Obama as Prez.
We need fundamental change. It's going to take at least 16 years to clean up after Bush.
Hillary's committment to women, families and children is deep and proven.
GIVE A WOMAN A CHANCE FOR REAL CHANGE
Vote and Support HILLARY CLINTON FOR PRESIDENT 2008
