Pope will make Hawaii's Damien a saint
Hawai'i Catholics rejoiced yesterday at news that the pope had cleared the way for Father Damien's sainthood and began planning for the big event.

"There's excitement, but there's, 'Oh, what do we have to do next?'" said the Rev. Ed Popish, who served for years as a pastor in Kalaupapa, Moloka'i, where Damien volunteered to work with patients afflicted with Hansen's disease, then called leprosy. Damien contracted the disease himself and died in 1889 at age 49.
The Vatican reported yesterday that Pope Benedict XVI signed a decree accepting that the miraculous cure of Audrey Toguchi of 'Aiea from terminal cancer was attributable to her prayers to Damien for his intervention with God.

Vatican: Excommunicate all female priests
The Vatican has decided to excommunicate all female priests and the male Bishops who ordained them. Analysts say it is meant to be a warning to all Catholics who want female priests.
-------------
"The decree was written by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and published in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, giving it immediate effect."
"A Vatican spokesman said the decree made the church's existing ban on female priests more explicit by clarifying that excommunication would follow all such ordinations.'
"Rev. Tom Reese, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, said he thought the decree was meant to send a warning to the growing number of Catholics who favor admitting women to the priesthood."
"I think the reason they're doing this is that they've realized there is more and more support among Catholics for ordaining women, and they want to make clear that this is a no-no," Reese said

'Ahmadinejad wants one-on-one with Pope'
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has asked for a meeting with the Pope during a visit to Rome, a diplomatic source says.
The Iranian chief executive is among the heads of state expected to visit Italy's capital to attend the June 3-5 United Nations summit. Vatican sources said earlier this week that it was not yet clear whether Pope Benedict would meet individual heads of state attending the UN event on global food security.
If the meeting is arranged, it would be the first meeting between Pope Benedict and President Ahmadinejad. The Holy See enjoys diplomatic ties with Iran and the pontiff has met with Iran's Foreign Minister, Manouchehr Mottaki.

The Pope goes digital
"Pope Benedict will text message thousands of young Catholics on their mobile phones during World Youth Day in Sydney in July, hoping going digital will help him connect better with a younger audience.
The Pope will text daily messages of inspiration and hope during the six-day Sydney event while digital prayer walls will be erected at event sites and the church will set up a Catholic social networking Web site akin to a Catholic Facebook.
The Catholic Church said it decided to use technology to connect to the estimated 225,000 young Catholics expected to attend the World Youth Day (WYD) celebrations that start on July 15.
"We wanted to make WYD08 a unique experience by using new ways to connect with today's tech-savvy youth," Bishop Anthony Fisher said in a statement on Wednesday.
Australian telecoms firm Telstra will provide voice, data, mobile, broadband and broadcast services for the event, as well as erect digital prayer walls at event sites. Telstra said it plans to connect 8,000 volunteers, 2,000 clergy, 3,000 media and an anticipated 225,000 pilgrims to more than 700 locations around Sydney." Pope Blesses Ground Zero
Pope Benedict XVI prayed at New York's Ground Zero on Sunday, asking God to bring healing and strength to grieving families, and direction for people "consumed with hatred."
He greeted dignitaries, including New York Gov. David Paterson, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine.
The pontiff was joined by 24 people he invited to the ceremony, including family members of people killed in the World Trade Center attacks and rescue workers who survived the attacks.
"We ask you, in your compassion, to bring healing to those who, because of their presence here that day, suffer from injuries and illness. Heal, too, the pain of still-grieving families and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope," he said.
The New York Times noted Sunday that the pope's service had "particular significance for many survivors of 9/11" because many of the victims had Roman Catholic backgrounds. Also, the CIA's World Factbook says approximately one in four Americans is Roman Catholic.

Pope prays with victims of clergy sex abuse scandal
The Pope prayed with tearful victims of clergy sex abuse in a chapel Thursday, an extraordinary gesture from a pontiff who has made atoning for the great shame of the U.S. church the cornerstone of his first papal trip to America.
The Pope met with a group of five or six abuse victims for about 25 minutes, offering them encouragement and hope. The were all adults, men and women, who had been molested when they were minors. Each spoke privately with the pope and the whole group prayed together.
Well over 4,000 priests have been accused of molesting minors in the U.S. since 1950. The church has paid out more than $2 billion, much of it in just the last six years, after the case of a serial molester in Boston gained national attention and inspired many victims to step forward. Six dioceses have been forced into bankruptcy because of abuse costs.

Pope's Red Shoes - Remindes me of Dorthea of Wizard and Oz
Pope Benedict XVI, sporting his handmade red loafers, steps onto U.S. soil at Andrews Air Force Base in Camp Springs, Md. Getty Images
All Things Considered, April 17, 2008 · Pope Benedict XVI's ruby red shoes are drawing plenty of attention as he visits Washington, D.C. The handmade loafers, crafted for Benedict by an Italian shoemaker, are seen as a statement of his desire to demonstrate continuity with the symbols and history of the church. Although Pope John Paul II often wore brown shoes, other pontiffs have also worn red shoes. Benedict's shoes also serve as a reminder of the many years he wore the red cloth of a cardinal.
Lawrence Cunningham, professor of theology at Notre Dame University, offers more insights on why the pontiff favors the color in a conversation with Michele Norris.

Yes, the grass at Yankee Stadium is holier than the Pope.
