    • Catholic university nixes feminist scholar for abortion beliefs

"The University of San Diego has withdrawn its offer of an endowed chair to a Catholic feminist scholar who supports abortion rights.

The announcement that Rosemary Radford Ruether had been appointed to the Monsignor John R. Portman Chair in Roman Catholic Theology was greeted with dismay by many Catholic and anti-abortion groups, the San Diego Union-Tribune said Wednesday. Ruether sits on the board of Catholics for a Free Choice.

University spokeswoman Patricia Gray Payton said that one person who did not object was the anonymous benefactor who endowed the chair.

"Her public position and the symbol of this chair are in direct conflict," Payton said. "This chair is a powerful, visible symbol of Roman Catholic theology, and in Roman Catholic theology abortion is disallowed."

The news that Ruether's appointment had been rescinded has created more controversy. Two Catholic women's groups have gathered 2,000 signatures on petitions asking the university to change its mind again. "

    • Feminists cry foul over "Fat Princess" game

She's plump, powerful and ready to cause more controversy than "SuperSize Me."

She's Fat Princess, the star of Sony's upcoming video game of the same name. Debuting at last week's E3 expo, the colorful Fat Princess is a capture-the-flag game with a twist: you can thwart capture attempts by locking the once-thin princess in a dungeon and stuffing her full of cake, thereby increasing her girth and making her harder for your enemies to haul back to home base.

According to popular gaming blog Joystiq, two feminist gaming sites have already voiced their displeasure with the weighty issue.

Feminist Gamer's "Mighty Ponygirl" rings in diplomatically, suggesting a new way to play the game altogether.

"Instead of running out into the forest to find cake to fatten up the princess with, why not go out and find gold (which is a lot heavier than cake) to stuff into a treasure chest. The more gold in the chest, the heavier it would be, and the harder it would be to carry," she said, before adding, "Oh, but that's not as "cute" as cake and fat chicks. Right."

Over at Shakesville, however, writer Melissa McEwan cuts to the chase, telling Sony she's "positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative ---holes."

Sony has yet to issue an official response, although Joystiq did receive a particularly informative update from James Green, Fat Princess' lead art director, who clued gamers in on the origins of the game:

"Does it make it better or worse that the concept artist (who designed the look, characters, everything) is a girl?"

Hmmm...hope the game's detractors don't mind eating a bit of crow.

    • Fatherless Homes and What Feminism Really Is

Opinion piece of feminism and what equality among genders REALLY is. Because it's not just about women "overcoming" the men. We've all got something to gain from this.

People think that by labeling myself a Feminist, I am silently proclaiming to the world that I hate men. I don't. Feminists aren't all lesbians. I love men. I'm in love with a man. I can't generalize the other half of the human race into a bunch of dogs who do nothing but fuck, eat, drink, and beat on their women when the urge hits them. No good feminist can, without taking their eyes off the prize we all seek: true equality. Bitching about EVERY MAN is just an attempt to make women higher than men, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but when it comes to true equality, if that's how you're handling this movement, you're not doin' it right!

That said, feminism -- the struggle for equality between women AND men -- cannot be achieved without men. If feminism was about the equality between women, we'd be fighting for equality AMONG women, which would probably contain arguments on race, religion, culture...but not men. See the difference, ladies and gents?

In my short lifetime, I have witnessed the rise and fall of my household, as well as the familial progressions of some acquaintances and friends. Of my close friends, only two have had both a mother and a father in their households.

Other than that, pretty much everyone else shared my condition: surviving by their single mom, no father in sight. My mom had a boyfriend, at one point, whom, as far as I knew, had no real job to speak of, and a history of drug abuse. If I wanted to form my idea of what a real man should be like off of him, I would want a man who will go to any conniving lengths to get what he wants. (I dated a man like that, by the way. He ran me $3000.) Not long after my mom became paralyzed by a tumor, her boyfriend disappeared as well, much to the relief of my brother and I.

It's a fact proven by US Department of Health & Human Services that 71% of all pregnant teen girls are from fatherless homes, and it's also a theory that most women never get over the absence of their fathers. Looking back at my first boyfriend and the heartache I caused for my own mom from all the times I tried to defend him when he purposely terrorized me with what I call "pregnancy threats," I see now that I easily could have been one of those knocked-up girls as early as fourteen. Without my brother, the only positive male role model for the first 16 years of my life, I could very well have been a statistic.

Some women never meet people like my brother. Some girls never know how good men should act and treat women. They, like me, grow up with skewed visions of love and relationships.

    • Tampon Chandelier and more feminist art (??)

Just because Domino Magazine co-sponsored The AFF this weekend in NYC you should not assume that only “decorator" art was on display. Past AFF participants have been snapped up by museums including Amy Stein whose work can know be seen at MoCP.

At this year's event we became infatuated with an exhibit called The Vanity Room by Vadis Turner. The room is composed of objects that represent the tension and complexity between traditional and contemporary gender roles for women. The sexy lingerie on display is made from wax paper normally used for baking. The pill necklace is made with birth control. The false eyelashes and nails were made from Turner’s BFA and MFA diplomas. Turner sees both beauty and intelligence as a cultural measure of worth. She adds, “I hope that the work visualizes the mixed message of wanting to be sexually desired and also perceived as a potential "wife" figure”

    • Clothesline Project -- airing dirty laundry, ending secrets

For the past 12 years, every spring a group of students come together to assemble the Clothesline Project at UCLA. The shirts are made by the survivors of sexual violence, rape and childhood sexual abuse. Friends and relatives of those who died also can make a shirt. The resulting clothesline is a powerful testament to the enormity of loss and pain. It's a healing process too.
