    • India deploys six more jets in Kashmir

India has deployed its top fighter jets in its part of disputed Kashmir bordering Pakistan, officials and a report said Wednesday.

At least six Soviet-built Sukhoi-30MKI jets, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, have been deployed at Avantipura air force base near Kashmir's largest city Srinagar.

The base is equipped with crash-prone MiG-21 jets, which India first imported from the Soviet Union in the 1960s.

"The Sukhois had been held deep down our strategic corridor in (the western Indian city of) Pune, and their deployment in Kashmir will address any perceived threat," an air force official said on condition he was not named. "But this is a defensive stance," the officer said.

Air Marshal P.K. Barbora, commander of India's Western Air Command, was quoted by the Indian newspaper as saying the deployment was "temporary."

India acquired 60 Sukhoi-30s in 2001. The twin-seater frontline jets can carry eight tonnes of armaments including nuclear bombs and cruise at a speed of 3,200 kilometres (1,988 miles) an hour.

The air force official said the Sukhois would patrol Indian borders extending up to China and fly across Kashmir's rugged Kargil peaks, where India and Pakistan fought a mini-war in 1999.

    • Pakistan Under Attack

Seven killed in U.S. missile strike in South Waziristan

WANA: Suspected U.S. drones fired four missiles Wednesday in a northwestern Pakistani tribal area near the Afghan border killing 7 people while 3 others were injured, officials said.

"Four missiles were fired by suspected U.S. drones in Baghar Cheena area in the restive South Waziristan on Wednesday evening," a senior security official told a foreign news agency.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon has claimed that U.S. led coalition forces carried out drone strike on an ammunition storage facility of Taliban, in which one al-Qaeda member and 3 Taliban militants were killed. The U.S. authorities said they shared the news with Pakistani officials after conducting the strike.

U.S. operated spy planes continued their flights in Wana and other territories.

The missile strike came hours after U.S. military chief Admiral Michael Mullen reiterated Washington's respect for the sovereignty of Pakistan.

Mullen, who flew to Islamabad on an unannounced trip late Tuesday, met General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani amid tensions over U.S. raids on tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.

"There are a few militant training camps in the area and no civilian population around the site of strikes," another official added.

    • Bhutto's widower elected president of Pakistan

Asif Ali Zardari has been elected the new president of Pakistan. He is the US-leaning widower of Benazir Bhutto, a former politician and campaigner for democracy who was killed in a suicide attack in December 2007, and had been widely tipped to win the race.

Members of parliament and its four provincial assemblies voted for a successor to Pervez Musharraf, who resigned last month. It's hoped that the ballot results will bring stability after months of political and economic turmoil, but the president will spend his first few months tackling problems such as militant violence and the falling rupee.

The news of Zardari's election comes after a suicide bomb attack killed 10 in Peshawar today.

    • Bhutto's widower to run for Pakistan presidency

(CNN) -- The husband of assassinated leader Benazir Bhutto has agreed to run for the Pakistani presidency.

The announcement was made Saturday at Asif Ali Zardari's home.

An election by lawmakers to replace Pervez Musharraf will be held on Sept. 6. The former strongman resigned less than a week ago rather than face the humiliation of impeachment.

Mian Raza Rabbani of the Pakistan People's Party said he was "happy to announce that Zardari had accepted his party's nomination" to run for president.

    • Islamist protests after mass death-row amnesty on Bhutto birthday

Pakistan has pardoned 7,000 death row inmates and changed their sentences to life imprisonment to celebrate the late Benazir Bhutto's birthday.

The gesture, which constitutes one of the biggest amnesties in modern history, was approved by the Cabinet this week. According to Amnesty International, the reprieve will affect almost one third of the world's death row population, which is estimated to be around 24,000. The prisoners sentences will be changed to imprisonment for life. According to a Pakistani official, prisoners sentenced for drug offenses and terrorism charges might not be offered a pardon.

However, radical Mullahs are encouraging Muslims to protest against the amnesty, arguing that it is against Sharia law and, as such, "un-Islamic." Furthermore, Mullahs draw attention to Islamic laws according to which only relatives of murder victims can pardon the murderer. Islamic leaders have announced that a meeting of religious groups is to be held at the radical Red Mosque in Islamabad on July 6 to make a plan to protest.

    • Pakistan's Sharif calls for Musharraf to be hanged

Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif stepped up his attack on President Pervez Musharraf on Saturday, suggesting he could be hanged while addressing thousands of protesters outside the national parliament.

"We asked you to quit with honor after the election but you didn't," Sharif told the crowd, referring to U.S. ally Musharraf, who overthrew him in a 1999 coup.

"Now people have given a new judgment for you ... they want you to be held accountable," he said in the early hours of Saturday.

The crowd, officially estimated at up to 20,000, chanted "hang Musharraf" as it listened to the two time former prime minister's fiery speech.

"Is hanging only for politicians?" asked Sharif, referring to former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, hanged by a military dictator in 1979.

"These blood-sucking dictators must be held accountable."

The demonstration, a few hundred meters from the presidency and parliament buildings, marked the climax of an almost week-long rolling protest across the country led by lawyers, though by the end they were easily outnumbered by Sharif party activists.

    • Musharraf rules out resignation

Despite losing badly to the opposition parties in Pakistan's parliamentary elections yesterday, President Pervez Musharraf says he has no plans to resign. Instead he says there is a need to move forward towards bringing about a stable democratic government in his country. And he's said that he would try to work with any new government "because that is in the interest of Pakistan."

Meanwhile, there is mention that the opposition parties (Bhutto's PPP and Nawaz Sharif's PML-N) could form a coalition which would then give the newly united parties more than half of parliament's seats. If this moves forward and the coalition manages to get a two-thirds majority in parliament, they could then call for Musharraf to be impeached.

Monday's election certainly snubbed out any rumours of rigging in favour of Musharraf. Do you think that is one step in the right direction for Pakistan's democracy? Will Musharraf be able to maintain his position?

    • Deadly blast at Pakistan meeting

A suicide bomber has killed 37 people after a meeting of supporters of murdered ex-PM Benazir Bhutto's party, Pakistan's interior ministry says.
The attack, on the last day of campaigning ahead of general elections on Monday, also wounded 90.

It took place in Parachinar, the main town of the tribal region of Kurram in north-west Pakistan.

Violence and vote-rigging fears have marred campaigning for the polls, which were postponed after Mrs Bhutto died.

Mrs Bhutto, the head of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), was assassinated in Rawalpindi on 27 December.

President Pervez Musharraf said on Saturday that he was confident the elections would be free and fair.
