Hollywood Punches Back in As Strike Ends
Euphoria over returning to work quickly gave way to workaday cold sweats as Hollywood writers resumed the daily grind of cranking out scripts after a three-month strike.
"I felt giddy," Craig Sweeny, a writer for the NBC drama "Medium," said about being back on the job Wednesday, a day after the Writers Guild of America overwhelmingly voted to end the walkout. "Then someone handed me a production schedule, and then I felt scared." Union OK's contract; Writers to vote and get back to work
The Writers Guild of America moved swiftly Sunday toward a resolution of its three-month-old strike, with guild leaders deciding to recommend the contract to members and ask them to vote on a quick end to the walkout.
By asking writers to vote separately on ending the strike and accepting the contract, the union cleared the way for the entertainment industry to return to work almost immediately.
Membership meetings will be held Tuesday in New York and Los Angeles to allow writers to decide whether the strike should be brought to a speedy end, said Patric Verrone, president of the guild's West Coast branch.
"This is the best deal this guild has bargained for in 30 years," Verrone said. The Writers Guild of America moved swiftly Sunday toward a resolution of its three-month-old strike, with guild leaders deciding to re... more -
Writers Guild reaches a tentative deal
"Open enthusiasm replaced days of guarded optimism as Hollywood writers streamed out of a Writer's Guild of America (WGA) meeting at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium Saturday night. WGA leaders recommended their members approve a contract offer from producers, suggesting a quick — but not immediate — end to the 14-week work stoppage that has crippled the entertainment industry since Nov. 5, interrupting production on television shows like 24 and Grey's Anatomy and costing up to $1.5 billion." Studios Cancel Writers' Contracts
Four major studios have canceled dozens of writers' contracts in a possible concession that the current television season cannot be saved, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.
The move means the 2-month old writers strike may also endanger next season's new shows, the Times said.
January is usually the beginning of pilot season, when networks order new scripted shows. But the strike leaves networks without a pool of comedy and drama scripts from which to choose.
20th Century Fox Television, CBS Paramount Network Television, NBC Universal and Warner Bros. Television told the Times they have terminated development and production agreements. Warner Bros. may cut 1,000 jobs
As many as 1,000 employees on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank could be laid off as a result of the writers strike, after Friday.
Apparently Warner Bros. distributed "legally mandated warning notices on November 12," 5 days after the WGA walkout began. The notices said that the "recipients could be subject to layoff after 60 days."
This strike is getting crazy. Should layoffs be a factor in the decision as to when, and on what conditions the strike should end?

Jay Leno is in T-R-O-U-B-L-E
Mr. Leno could face disciplinary action from the WGA for writing his monologue.
Leno met with WGA West President Patric Verrone to discuss his decision to write his own monologue. During the meeting Leno was told that writing the monologue constituted a violation of WGA strike rules.
Did the other hosts "write" or just talk? I mean what do they mean by "write"? They all came back on air. If you just made it up in your head would that have been okay, or, is it the preparation that is most important. I am sure they all didn't just go on their shows and not say anything funny, or anything at all.
