A 4-ft long AI helicopter was tested at Stanford University on Monday, flying itself over the campus and performing flips, rolls pirouettes, as well as a range of other complicated manouvres. It is hoped that such un-manned aircraft would be able to help scout wildfires, look for landmines or be deployed on military missions. Gizmodo brings us a peak into one of the biggest freezers in the world, located at the aerospace test centre in Seosan, South Korea.

The 2 million sq ft, freezer is used to test the capabilities of combat aircraft under extreme conditions, including simulations of snow and freezing rain conditions at 40,000 ft.

Apparenly this is a '$52 million dollar secret facility', which doesn't really explain why we now know about it and can see all the pretty pictures (and who're all the touristy-looking people in the pic?)...

    • Plane forced to emergency land, hole in floor

A Qantas passenger plane travelling from London to Melbourne had to make an emergency landing after a massive hole formed in the plane's undercarriage.

The Boeing 747-400, carrying 346 passengers and 19 staff had to divert to Manila where it landed safely with no reported injuries.

Unsurprisingly, an airport official said "passengers looked scared and some were sick."

Wouldn't you be if a hole formed in the plane that was carrying you 30,000ft above a big ocean?

    • A New Cold War in the Caribbean?

Ever since the Monroe Doctrine, the United States has seen the Caribbean in the way that the Romans viewed the Mediterranean — Mare Nostrum, Our Sea. From the Spanish-American War through the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Central American dirty wars of the Reagan era, Washington was always quick to flex its muscle over the rum-soaked waters that stretch from Florida to Venezuela. The bad news: It ain't our sea anymore, gringos.

"The U.S. let its guard down in the Caribbean after the Berlin Wall fell," says Johanna Mendelson-Forman, a senior associate for the Americas at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "As a result we've gone from unipolarity in that region to multipolarity, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but we're in a real learning phase as to how to deal with it."

Chavez's visit to Moscow this week, not only to buy more than $1 billion worth of anti-aircraft missiles and submarines, but also to commune with growing anti-American resentment in Russia, resurrected old ghosts for some conservative yanqui lawmakers. Florida Congressman Connie Mack declared the Caracas-Moscow partnership "a stark reminder of the Cold War partnership between the Soviet Union and Cuba."

    • B-52 bomber Crashes in Guam kills at least 2

HONOLULU (AP) — The Air Force says at least two crew members are dead after the crash of a B-52 bomber off Guam.

Rescue teams are searching a vast area of the Pacific Ocean on Monday for the remaining four airmen.

The Coast Guard says six vessels, three helicopters, two F-15 fighter jets and a B-52 bomber are involved in the search.

The military says the B-52 was en route to a flyover in a parade when it crashed about 9:45 a.m. about 30 miles northwest of Apra Harbor. The plane was based at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

HONOLULU (AP) — Rescue crews were searching a vast area of floating debris and a sheen of oil Monday for crew members of an Air Force B-52 bomber that crashed off the island of Guam, officials said.

At least two people from the bomber's six-man crew were recovered from the waters, but their condition was not immediately available, the Coast Guard said.

Maj. Stuart Upton, a Pentagon spokesman, said the aircraft was unarmed.

Six vessels, three helicopters, two F-15 fighter jets and a B-52 bomber were involved in the search, which had covered about 70 square miles of ocean, said Coast Guard spokeswoman Lt. Elizabeth Buendia.

"We have an active search that's going to go on throughout the night," she said Monday. The Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force and local fire and police departments were involved.

The B-52 bomber based at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana was en route to conduct a flyover in a parade when it crashed around 9:45 a.m. Monday about 30 miles northwest of Apra Harbor, the Air Force said.

The Liberation Day parade celebrates the day when the U.S. military arrived on Guam to retake control of the island from Japan.

The Air Force said a board of officers will investigate the accident.

The accident is the second for the Air Force this year on Guam, a U.S. territory 3,700 miles southwest of Hawaii.

In February, a B-2 crashed at Andersen Air Force Base shortly after takeoff in the first-ever crash of a stealth bomber. Both pilots ejected safely. The military estimated the cost of the loss of the aircraft at $1.4 billion.

The B-52 is a long-range, heavy bomber that can refuel in mid air. Since the 159 foot-long bomber was first placed into service in 1955, it has been used for a wide range of missions from attacks to ocean surveillance. Two B-52s, in two hours, can monitor 140,000 square miles of ocean surface.

According to the Air Force's Web site, the B-52 Stratofortress has been the backbone of the manned strategic bomber force for the United States for more than four decades. It is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory, including cluster bombs and precision guided missiles.

    • Most Model Aircraft Flown Simultaneously World Record set by SEFF

A new Guinness World Record was set earlier this month at the Southeastern Electric Flight Festival, near Altlanta Georgia, U.S.A. for the total number of R/C model aircraft flown at the same time within a period of one minute. Ric Vaughn was event co-coordinator for the attempt which exceeded the standing record of 49 models (set in South Africa) with no less than 113 launches.

One hundred planes remained in the air for the required time. "During the range check we had a total of 59 2.4GHz systems on and bound at the same time" said Vaughn, "Sky space was not a problem, most participants said they had plenty of room to fly, but there was one midair, which cost us a plane. All and all, it went way better than I thought it would."

    • China establishes company to make its own jumbo jets

China has established a homegrown company to make passenger jumbo jets, state media reported Sunday - a step forward in the country's quest to become less dependent on Boeing and Airbus.

China Commercial Aircraft Co. was established in Shanghai with registered capital of 19 billion yuan $2.7 billion, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

It said the central government and the Shanghai government are among the major shareholders, as are China's two main aircraft manufacturing and servicing companies, China Aviation Industry Corp. I and China Aviation Industry Corp. II, which were split off from state-owned China Aviation Industry Corp. in 1999.

Europe's Airbus has forecast that China's domestic market will increase fivefold by 2026. Airbus and Chicago-based rival Boeing dominate the market for commercial airplanes carrying 100 or more people.

Xinhua said Commercial Aircraft Co. will be able to make planes with more than 150 seats.

General manager Jin Zhuanglong said in a Xinhua interview that it was too early to say when a Chinese-developed jumbo jet would be taking off, as it would take a long time to develop homegrown talent and do research.

    • Five killed in Kent plane crash

Two pilots and three passengers, among whom were David Leslie, a former prominent British touring car racer and Richard Lloyd, owner of the Apex Motorsport team, were killed yesterday when their small plane crashed into a housing estate in Farnborough in Kent. They were heading to Pau, southwest France to test a car. Witnesses spoke of the plane's engines "screaming like a fighter jet" just before it crashed. One said he saw the "terrified" faces of the people in the plane as it flew just metres above the roofs of houses.

The pilot reported problems shortly after take-off. He requested an emergency landing but the plane crashed before it could get back to the airport. Locals have said it was a "miracle" no-one living in the street was injured or killed and that no-one was at home in the house which bore the brunt of the crash. The bodies of the five victims are to be removed from the wreckage today.
