    • Elvis Is Alive Museum for sale again on EBay

The Elvis Is Alive Museum is once again for sale on eBay. The museum's owner, Andy Key of Mississippi, says military duties will keep him away from home for at least five months.

The 39-year-old Key set a minimum starting bid of $15,000 on the listing, which ends Friday. He bought the museum on eBay last year for $8,300.

Key told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he hopes someone local buys the contents of the museum and continues running it in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The collection includes photographs, books, FBI files, DNA reports and other memorabilia that aim to support the theory that Elvis never died.

Bill Beeny, a Baptist minister who founded the museum in 1990 in Missouri, says he has no plans to buy it back.

    • Need Bling?

New York auctioneers prepare to put a collection of 'hip hop's crown jewels' under the hammer.

Jewelery in the auction comes from rap stars ranging from Missy Elliott and Kanye West to Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG.

The auction gives hip hop the kind of cultural weight previously accorded to icons such as Andy Warhol and the Beatles.

In all, 70 of pieces are being auctioned by Phillips de Pury, which has set itself up as the auction house for young collectors.

They are expected to raise an estimated $3million (£1.6million).

The sale was scheduled for October 1 but has drawn so much interest that it has had to be postponed until March 5 next year so late-coming pieces can be included.

      Lots will include:

      • A crown ring with 10 carats of cabochon rubies and pavé diamonds said to have been worn by Tupac when he was shot dead in Las Vegas in 1996 - inscribed in honor of his relationship with music doyen Quincy Jones's daughter (listed at $10,000 to $20,000)

      • Missy Elliot's all-moving mini-turntable of black diamonds and gold ($8,000 to $12,000)

      • A diamond and white gold Gucci link necklace belonging to Pharrell Williams (up to $250,000)

      • A diamond and platinum bracelet owned by Sean 'Diddy' Combs.

      • Lil Jon's 12lb Crunk Ain't Dead necklace, featuring 3,756 diamonds.

Kanye West's diamond-studded black Jesus pendant may also go under the hammer.

Other candidates for inclusion are a gold ring embossed with the face of Egypt's Queen Nefertiti; a diamond-encrusted cassette and headphone pendants owned by rapper Biz Markie; a large gold and stainless steel Rolex with diamond bezel owned by Notorious BIG.

The auction is set to show how bling displaced Nike shoes and baseball caps as the visual signature of rap and hip hop.

The outrageous ostentation of the pieces is the whole point, according to experts.

Owners have donated the items to raise money for the Smithsonian Institution's new hip hop archive and for Rush Community Affairs, a charity founded by hip hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons.

    • Berlin Wall slab sold at auction

A Berlin auction house says it has sold one of the few remaining sections of the Berlin Wall for more than 7,800 euros (£6,150).

The large graffiti-covered stretch of the wall, which once divided capitalist West Berlin from the communist East, was bought for display in an office. Many fake pieces of the Berlin Wall have been sold in the past, but the auctioneers said this item was genuine.

The wall was demolished in 1989, after the collapse of the East German state. For nearly three decades, it kept East and West Berliners apart. Much of the demolished wall was used for constructing roads. Other sections were collected and eventually used in a monument to Germany's division. Authentic pieces are in museums around the world, including at the Imperial War Museum in London. About 1,065 people were killed at the wall trying to escape from East Germany.

      ***
Luckily I chipped away my own piece of the Berlin Wall early in 1990! Anyone else get a piece of the Berlin Wall?

    • 22-Year-Old Auctioning Off Her Virginity

      Going once....

A Sacramento State grad is putting her virginity on the auction block to help pay for her studies.

"I don't think auctioning my virginity will solve all my problems, but it will create some financial stability," the 22-year-old (who uses the pseudonym "Natalie Dylan") says on tonight's The Insider. "I'm ready for the controversy ... I'm ready to do this."

Dylan says she's already taken a polygraph test to prove her virginal status and is also willing to undergo a medical exam.

She says she hopes to net up to a million dollars from the auction, which will take place in Nevada at the infamous Moonlight Bunny Ranch (eBay turned her down).

"Through this process I'm not just looking for the highest bidder," she says, adding, "I'm looking for someone who is a genuine, overall nice person."

"British artist Damien Hirst says his decision to hold an open auction of new works rather than go down the more traditional route of galleries and dealers is his way of being a modern-day punk.

The 43-year-old shocked the contemporary art world when he announced that more than 220 new works, collectively called "Beautiful Inside My Head Forever", would be auctioned by Sotheby's in the first sale of its kind by a major artist."

    • Latest Wikileaks prize for sale to the highest bidder

The secret-spilling site Wikileaks announced this week that it's acquired thousands of e-mails belonging to a top aide to Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. But don't look for them online. In a departure from its full-disclosure past, Wikileaks is auctioning off the cache to the highest bidder.

Wikileaks began soliciting bids from media organizations on Tuesday, for what it describes as thousands of e-mails and attachments from 2005 to 2008 that provide insight into Chavez's management, CIA activities in Venezuela and the Bolivarian revolution.

The auction contrasts sharply with Wikileaks' original goal of recruiting legions of netizens to publicly analyze formerly secret corporate and government documents. The site says the money it earns in the auction will going to its source defense fund.

University of Minnesota media ethics professor Jane Kirtly laughed when told of the scheme.

"Ethically speaking, why don't they just publish it?" Kirtly asked. "They pride themselves on being a new breed of news delivery."

Launched nearly two years ago, Wikileaks made its mark publishing sensitive Guantanamo Bay documents and fending off a lawsuit from Swiss banking company Julius Baer that attempted to wipe the site off the net, but only ended up rallying support for the site.

But Wikileaks' most public figure -- Julian Assange, a former hacker and journalist -- told Wired.com earlier this year that the wiki model had failed and that the site would be experimenting with new economic models, though he did not mention plans to ask media organizations to bid on leaked documents.

The auction is just an experiment, and carries too much overhead to be employed for every leak, Assange said by e-mail Tuesday.

When asked whether he expects news organizations such as The Washington Post to bid on documents, Assange argued that media outlets already pay for news.

"Media organizations pay hundreds of thousands to millions for photos and video footage," he said. "People magazine notoriously paid over $10 [million] for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's baby photos."

Stephen Aftergood, who runs a complementary and competing site called Secrecy News that focuses on U.S. government documents, called the e-mail trove a "coup" for Wikileaks. But Aftergood also doubts the auction model will attract quality media outlets.

"It looks like Wikileaks is still looking for the optimal method to distribute its materials," Aftergood said. "I think it will automatically rule out publications like The New York Times and others that might devote significant attention to an in-depth look at such internal e-mails but would not pay for them."

Outside of the tabloid press, U.S. media generally refuses to pay sources as a matter of professional ethics. The fear is that such payment would provide an economic incentive for sources to fabricate documents and stories.

Kirtly, who led the Reporters' Committee for the Freedom of the Press for 14 years, shares Aftergood's practical objections, noting that many outlets have strict policies against paying sources.

"Whether [U.S. media outlets] are cheap or have ethics, I don't know," Kirtly said."From an entrepreneurial standpoint, I think Wikileaks will be disappointed."

Assange, though, argues that any news worth reading is worth paying for.

"The degree to which news organizations refuse to pay for 'the' news is proportional to the degree to which they are able to bilk the public with unworthy alternatives," he writes.

"Indeed for anyone who has been in the news business for a while knows, manufacture of news is so arbitrary the result must be described primarily as mere entertainment."

For his part, Aftergood is skeptical of the auction, but he's not opposed to it.

"But maybe I'm wrong," he said. "It's worth a try."

    • Biden pick shows lack of confidence. What Obama says about it.

In picking Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate, Barack Obama sought to shore up his weakness — inexperience in office and on foreign policy — rather than underscore his strength as a new-generation candidate defying political conventions.
Democratic strategists, fretting over polls that showed McCain erasing Obama's lead this summer, welcomed the move. They, too, worried that Obama needed a more conventional — read: tougher — approach to McCain.
Indeed, Obama has begun to aggressively counter McCain's criticism with negative television ads and sharp retorts from the campaign trail.
So the question is whether Biden's depth counters Obama's inexperience — or highlights it?

Three drawings by legendary Spnish artist Francisco de Goya, the so called 'father of modern art', which had been lost since 1877, have sold for more than £4m ($8m) at auction. One of the drawings: 'Bajar rinendo' (pictured) meaning 'down they come', fetched £2.2m, the most ever paid for a Goya work on paper.

The pieces all come from Goya's famous 'notebooks', which contain hundreds of small drawings, which fascinate art historians just as much as his more famous works: known for their nightmarish, psycological, and religious themes.

    • deadliest job in america: working on cell phone towers

Next time you can't get a cell phone signal in the middle of town, put your problem in perspective: New figures show that the deadliest job in America now goes to the men and women who construct, upgrade, and repair cell phone towers.

According to a story in this week's RCR Wireless News (no online link yet), building and climbing towers (which can be hundreds of feet tall) is more dangerous than ranching, fishing, logging, and even ironworking. The fatality rate is currently 183.6 deaths per 100,000 workers: Five tower workers died during one 12-day span earlier this year alone. 18 tower workers died on the job in 2006.

    • Ebay to pay $59M to fashion house for selling fakes

PARIS - A French commercial court Monday ordered eBay Inc. to pay more than $59 million to a high-end fashion company because counterfeit goods were sold on the auction site.

The fashion company, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, is home to such prestigious brands including Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Fendi, Emilio Pucci and Marc Jacobs, and had complained that it was hurt by the sale of knockoff bags and clothes on eBay.

Pierre Godet, an adviser to LVMH Chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault, said the Paris court's decision was "an answer to a particularly serious question, on whether the Internet is a free-for-all for the most hateful, parasitic practices."

EBay countered that LVMH is trying to crack down on Internet auctions merely because it is uncomfortable with the business model, which tends to cut out the middleman.

"If counterfeits appear on our site, we take them down swiftly," eBay spokeswoman Sravanthi Agrawal said. "But today's ruling is not about counterfeits. Today's ruling is about an attempt by LVMH to protect uncompetitive commercial practices at the expense of consumer choice and the livelihood of law-abiding sellers that eBay empowers every day."

She said eBay hopes to appeal the ruling.
