    • Climate Debate: Quantum Cascade Lasers Give Rise to New Data

In light of recent IPCC reports, I thought it might be interesting to find out more about the methods used to generate their data.

Lucky for me, my old college pal, Troy Ribaudo, PhD candidate of Applied Physics at UMASS Lowell, just happens to be working on some of the newest methods of atmospheric gas detection using quantum cascade lasers.

Have a listen to the dense yet delightful interview.

    • Greenland ice sheet runoff will more than double by century's end

The Greenland Ice Sheet is melting faster than previously calculated according to a scientific paper by University of Alaska Fairbanks researcher Sebastian H. Mernild published recently in the journal "Hydrological Processes."
The study is based on the results of state-of-the-art modeling using data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as well as satellite images and observations from on the ground in Greenland.

Mernild and his team found that the total amount of Greenland Ice Sheet freshwater input into the North Atlantic Ocean expected from 2071 to 2100 will be more than double what is currently observed.

The current East Greenland Ice Sheet freshwater flux is 257 km3 per year from both runoff and iceberg calving. This freshwater flux is estimated to reach 456 km3 by 2100.

Mernild's results further show a change in total East Greenland freshwater flux from today's values of 438 km3 per year to 650 km3 per year by 2100. This indicates an increase in global sea level rise estimates from 1.1 millimeters per year to 1.6 millimeters per year.

"The Greenland Ice Sheet mass balance is changing as a response to the altered climatic state," said Mernild.

"This is faster than expected. This affects freshwater runoff input to the North Atlantic Ocean, and plays an important role in determining the global sea level rise and global ocean thermohaline circulation."

    • "No sun link" to climate change

Scientists have produced further compelling evidence showing that modern-day climate change is not caused by changes in the Sun's activity.

The research contradicts a favoured theory of climate "sceptics", that changes in cosmic rays coming to Earth determine cloudiness and temperature.

The idea is that variations in solar activity affect cosmic ray intensity.

But Lancaster University scientists found there has been no significant link between them in the last 20 years.

Presenting their findings in the Institute of Physics journal, Environmental Research Letters, the UK team explain that they used three different ways to search for a correlation, and found virtually none.

" The IPCC has got it right, so we had better carry on trying to cut carbon emissions"

      Terry Sloan

This is the latest piece of evidence which at the very least puts the cosmic ray theory, developed by Danish scientist Henrik Svensmark at the Danish National Space Center (DNSC), under very heavy pressure.

Dr Svensmark's idea formed a centrepiece of the controversial documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle.

    • Billions face climate change risk

Billions of people face shortages of food and water and increased risk of flooding, experts at a major climate change conference have warned.

The bleak conclusion came ahead of the publication of a key report by hundreds of international environmental experts.

Agreement on the final wording of the report was reached after a marathon debate through the night in Brussels.

People living in poverty would be worst affected by the effects of climate change, the gathered experts said.

"It's the poorest of the poor in the world, and this includes poor people even in prosperous societies, who are going to be the worst hit," said Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Mr Pachauri said those people were also the least equipped to deal with the effects of such changes.

    • Senate Report on Climate Change Skepticism

This report sounds like something the German Parliament would issue during WW2 to tell the people that the Holocaust in not happening, and if it is the Nazis are not responsible for it. Personally, I have no political biases regarding my views on climate change. I don't support Al Gore's view because I am a "Democrat." I support his view on climate change and that of the PEER REVIEWED scientists across this globe who are actually posting the data and connecting the dots, because I have armed myself with the knowledge I need to see with my own eyes... the very thing this report aims to stop because of course, to those in Congress an enlightened and informed citizenry is indeed the biggest threat to them. And unlike them my wallet does not hold sway over my beliefs. Like Senators by the name of Inhofe and others who do nothing but issue reports at opportune moments to coincide with their own personal petty political grudges. The rate of ice melt in the Arctic and Greenland alone is three times faster than ever predicted. It is unprecedented. Again, unprecedented. It has been proven by PEER REVIEWED scientists (not weathermen or Senators with no scientific background) that CO2 forcings on this planet along with other gases and sources together with anthropogenic climate change are changing our relationship with this planet. Now, we can "debate" all day until we are blue in the face but it doesn't change the reality of what this planet is becoming regardless of what you may personally believe is responsible for it. It is as if this report is then telling the American people not to care about this planet or their responsibility as stewards to her or to try to understand what is now occurring. I suppose they also believe that air and water pollution are not caused by humans either? Poisoning our water and air thus leading to diseases is not human induced? How about poverty? How about war? We aren't responsible for that either? Water scarcity, deforestation... Who is cutting down all the trees thus exacerbating the effects of this crisis? God? To me, this report is nothing more than a timed trashing of a man they fear the most. The one man who came out with a movie that explained what is happening to our planet in a way those whom they wished to keep in the dark for their own selfish reasons understand, and they are more afraid of it hurting their financial bottomlines than anything else. And in my view, telling people that there is "nothing to worry about" regardless of your belief when we can see otherwise just to protect your wallet and political standing is not only morally bankrupt, it is criminal. This report sounds like something the German Parliament would issue during WW2 to tell the people that the Holocaust in not happening,... more

    • Arctic Meltdown: Newsweek Interview With Robert Corell

Robert Corell was the lead scientist of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment Report regarding climate change in the Arctic. I recommend reading this interview with him as he basically corroborates what Al Gore has also been stating, and explains why sea level rise may well be greater than reported by the IPCC, as they only considered water expansion from warming oceans not including addiitonal melt water from glaciers that would be added to it. With Greenland melting at such a rapid pace that must be considered. As he stated, we must now build a "climate cathedral." I agree with Mr. Gore when he states that both the U.S. and China must stop using the other's nonaction as an excuse for their own. It is childish and it is now dangerous. • Fiddling as the Planet Warms

      A humourous take on a serious situation . . .

Excerpt: "In October the IPCC, along with Al Gore, won the Nobel Prize. In November it issued an urgent warning: To a 90% certainty, global warming is real and man made; it's happening faster than scientists predicted; its consequences include drought, vast flooding and the likely extinction of a fourth of all living species.

In response to this news, Democratic presidential candidates spent all of five minutes in their last debate discussing energy. Republican presidential candidates have only scorn for Gore, the UN, the Nobel Prize and science generally. And then there's Bush, the Nero of global warming."
