    • Man Beats Teen Girl Over Who Was First at McDonald's

Los Angeles police are looking for a man who beat up a 16-year-old girl at a McDonald's counter after she complained about him cutting in line.

Police announced their investigation Tuesday night and posted surveillance video online.

Police say the girl, her 5-year-old niece and a friend were standing in line on Sept. 14 at the McDonald's in South Los Angeles. The suspect and two young boys then approached the counter when the 16-year-old started arguing with the man over who was first in line.

Police say the girl swore at the man, who then got angry and punched her in the face several times.

The suspect left with the boys in a red pickup truck.

The teenager was treated for her injuries at a hospital and released.

    • Teen wanted mom dead to pay for breast work

A murder-for-hire plot disrupted Thursday night was hatched, in part, so a man could finance his girlfriend's breast augmentation, police said.

Nikita Weis, 18, offered to pay two men a total of $7,000 to break into his home, kill his mother and dispose of her body, said Fountain Deputy Police Chief Mike Barnett.

Weis planned to sell her car and drain her bank accounts, using some of the money to buy breast implants for his girlfriend, 21-year-old Sophia Alsept, Barnett said.

The plan unraveled during a botched home invasion about 11 p.m. Thursday.

Weis' mother, Hyun Weis, 42, was cooking dinner for her son when a man dressed in black barged into her home in the 7100 block of Yampa River Heights and assaulted her with a miniature baseball bat, Barnett said.

"I'd describe it as a souvenir baseball bat, but certainly capable of causing serious bodily injury or death," he said.

The woman used the "panic button" on her car keys to set off her alarm, spooking the intruder. She ran next door and alerted a neighbor, who phoned police.

At the time of the assault, Nikita Weis was at home and his girlfriend was waiting outside, Barnett said.

Hyun Weis, who was struck in the head, was being kept Friday for observation at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, but she was expected to be OK, police said.

    • Mom admits helping son build weapons cache

A woman admitted she helped her troubled, bullied 14-year-old son build a weapons cache by buying a rifle and gunpowder, but investigators still don't know if she was aware her son was planning a deadly school attack.

Michele Cossey, 46, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Montgomery County Court to one count of child endangerment. She admitted that she gave her son access to a rifle with a laser scope and gunpowder, which investigators said he was using to build grenades.

Prosecutors said her son, Dillon, came to idolize the Columbine High School shooters and was planning an attack last year on Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, which some former schoolmates attended.

Cossey, bullied over his weight, had left public school in seventh grade and was being home-schooled. Over time, violent Internet sites fueled his revenge fantasies, his defense lawyer said after his juvenile court plea.

Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Christopher Parisi said he thought purchasing the weapons was "an attempt to boost his self-esteem, and in some way help the child, as misplaced as those thoughts may have been."

Michelle Cossey's sentencing won't occur for at least three months until a psychiatric evaluation is completed. The maximum possible prison term is 3 1/2 to 7 years, but her defense attorney she could get less than a year—or even just probation—under sentencing guidelines.

Authorities did not think the school attack was imminent, but the boy did amass an arsenal—knives, swords, BB guns, the rifle and partly assembled homemade grenades—in his bedroom at his Plymouth Township home.

Police learned of the planned attack when Cossey invited a friend to join him. The friend went to police last fall.

The boy's father, Frank, sat beside his wife as she entered the plea. He had tried to buy their son a rifle in 2005, but was stymied by a prior felony conviction, which he failed to note on the application. The omission led to a house arrest sentence for lying about his criminal record.

    • Autism 'may be missed' in girls

Autism is thought to affect four times as many boys as girls - but the latest study suggests this might not be the case.
Studies are showing that girls are often misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all, because the symptoms appear differently in girls than in boys.

Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, an autism expert at the University of Cambridge, says
"This is an important clinical issue and there are too few studies addressing it.

"We shouldn't assume autism or Asperger syndrome will look the same in both sexes.

"There may be many factors leading to these conditions either being underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed in females, or leading females to require a diagnosis less often."

Judith Gould, of the National Autistic Society, said: "We hear from many women who have been diagnosed later in life.

"The way autism is presented in women can be very complex and so can be missed.

"It might be that due to misconceptions and stereotypes, many girls and women with autism are never referred for diagnosis, and so are missing from statistics.

"This may mean that many women who are undiagnosed are not receiving support, which can have a profound effect on them and their families."

Ms Gould said it was also possible that girls were better at masking difficulties in order to fit in with society.

"Characteristics such as shyness and oversensitivity, common to people affected by autism, are sometimes deemed to be typically female traits.

"However if a boy were to display such characteristics, concerns may be raised."

    • Making Textbooks Affordable

Open (online) textbooks can change the way textbooks are used, produced and sold, says Nicole Allen, director of the Make Textbooks Affordable campaign by Student Public Interest Research Groups.

The non-profit student advocacy network has been pushing for open textbooks since 2003, hoping the format catches on so prices will decrease and bring some relief.

Allen is leading an effort to gather signatures for an Open Textbook Statement of Intent, which asks faculty to consider using open textbooks. The statement (published at www.maketextbooksaffordable.org) has more than 1,200 signatures from faculty in all 50 states in schools ranging from community colleges to four-year universities to graduate schools.

    • Teens' Cell Phones Indispensible?

ell phones have become almost as important to American teens as the clothes they wear, according to a nationwide survey of teenagers released last week.

The wireless trade association CTIA and Harris Interactive surveyed some 2,000 teens across the country and learned that teens feel that cell phones have become a vital part of their identities. They also believe that they can gauge a peer's popularity or status by the phone he or she uses.
About four out of every five teens carry a cell phone. This is up from 40 percent of teens owning a cell phone in 2004. And almost half of the teens surveyed today say that having a cell phone is "key" to their social lives

According to the survey, teens also say they want phones that are waterproof and shockproof, are made of flexible materials that can bend, and have artificial intelligence that will provide answers to questions.

    • Boy Scout cleaning 5,000 vet graves, nears goal

A 14-year-old Eagle Scout candidate has spent his summer applying water and bleach to thousands of veterans’ grave markers, a project Thomas Kaminski chose to honor his late grandfather’s military service.

Kaminski set out to organize the cleaning of about 5,000 grave markers at the Grand Rapids Veterans Cemetery. Some markers date back to the Civil War.

But next weekend is the last for his project, and he still has 1,500 stones to go. And he could use some help.

"I don't know why Tom and (his mom) Margaret haven't been able to rally the troops," said Cara Newton, a Scout mom who brought her sons Brandon, 17, and Eric, 14, to help. They're part of Kaminski's Troop 325.

"Scouts try to help each other when they can, but the older Scouts work. This was a huge project," Newton said. "Tom really had a passion for this."

It takes about five to seven minutes to clean each marker.

"There are just so many of them," Margaret said.

Seeking help, they've approached Scouts, families of veterans and the public.

"If we get enough people, it won't take long to do," said Ann Marie. "And it would be a nice way to end the summer, doing something for men and women who did a heck of a lot for us."

Anyone willing to help with the cleaning project Saturday, between 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., may contact Thomas Kaminski at flyingeagles341@yahoo.com.

He's had a passion for veterans since he was little, said his grandmother, Ann Marie Kaminski. Tom's father and grandfather both died shortly before he was born, but Ann Marie Kaminski told Tom about his grandfather's service in the Army.

    • 'Pregnancy pact' principal resigns

A high school principal who set off a furor after being quoted as saying that teenage girls formed a pact to get pregnant has resigned, weeks after his comments were publicly questioned by the mayor.

Time magazine reported in June that Joseph Sullivan said a pact made by a group of teens to get pregnant and raise their babies together was at least partly behind a spike in pregnancies at Gloucester High School. Seventeen girls at the school became pregnant this year -- four times the usual number.

Sullivan later said he did not recall using the word "pact" but believed many of the pregnancies were intentional.

The theory arose amid a debate over whether to dispense contraceptives at a school health clinic without parents' knowledge.

Mayor Carolyn Kirk said at a June 23 news conference that she and school officials could not confirm the existence of a pact and had not invited Sullivan to the news conference because they could not verify his comments.
The principal said in a statement released by his attorney Tuesday that he believes the mayor "publicly slandered my reputation, my integrity and my intelligence" at the news conference.

"The ramifications of this whole episode on me and ... my family have been devastating and the Mayor's actions and the Superintendent's public silence has forced me to recognize that I have neither the trust, confidence or respect of the Mayor nor the Superintendent," Sullivan said in the statement sent to the Gloucester Daily Times.

He said he was resigning effective Friday and would retire.

"I have at all times tried to fair and honest with the students, the faculty, the staff and the community," he said. "At all times I have done what I have felt was in the best interests of the high school."

Kirk said in a statement Tuesday that "Dr. Sullivan will long be remembered in Gloucester for the many individual families he helped over the past 10 years. I wish him all the best in his retirement."

She did not immediately return calls to her office and home seeking further comment.

Officials have started an extensive study of teen pregnancy in Gloucester, including a review of the city's sex education programs and whether the school's 8-year-old day care center sent a message approving of teen motherhood
