    • Man DIES after he is denied a liver transplant due to prescribed medical marijuana...

a 56 year old prescribed medical marijuana user (to treat his hepatitis C symptoms) was DENIED a liver transplant BECAUSE of his dope usage, and died.

they said they couldnt put him on the list for transplants until he completed a 60 day drug treatment program, even though he was prescribed pot from his doctor.
what do we think about this?
Should using medical marijuana with a doctor's blessing be held against a dying patient in need of a transplant? It is considered an illicit drug under federal law..

    • Botched LASIK Eye Surgery Leads To Corneal Transplant

"The vast majority of the time, LASIK eye surgery works out just fine. Then there are stories like Patrick's. He was a "perfect" candidate for LASIK eye surgery according to both the doctor who performed the procedure and other experts who reviewed his records later. After the procedure, however, he began to lose vision in his left eye, and eventually had to have a corneal transplant. Patrick's detailed account of how LASIK Plus reacted—stringing him along with multiple visits and the wrong diagnoses, misplacing his records, and denying any responsibility—has left him feeling he should share his story with the rest of the world."

I think anyone considering cosmetic surgery on a sensitive part of the body should seriously weight out the pros and cons first.

    • A Heart And Soul Transplant?

Today there are two different stories in the press concerning heart transplant recipients who took on some of the personality traits of their organ donors. Apparently the phenomenon is not uncommon, with about 70 such cases documented by scientists.

In the most recently reported case, a Georgia man named Sonny Graham received the heart of a 33 year old man named Terry Cottle who had committed suicide by putting a gun to his head. Wanting to thank the family of the donor, Sonny got in touch with Terry 's widow Cheryl. When they met, despite a very large age gap (Sonny was thirty years older than Cheryl), the two felt an instant attraction, and subsequently married in 2004. "I felt like I had known her for years," said Sonny. "I couldn't keep my eyes off her. I just stared."

Sadly, last week, in a bizarre turn of events, Sonny was found dead with a single bullet to the throat. With no foul play suspected, it appears that Sonny had used the same suicide method as the first owner of his heart to tragically end his life.

The second similar case, which was reported by The Daily Mail, has a less gruesome ending. Claire Sylvia, a former professional dancer from Massachusetts, had a heart and lung transplant in 1988 at the age of 47. While recovering from surgery she discovered she had developed entirely new cravings for very un-dancer-like consumables such as Snickers bars, green peppers, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and beer. "For some bizarre reason, I was convinced that nothing else in the world could quench my thirst," recalls Claire.

She noticed other physical and emotional changes too. She was much healthier, easily fighting off the colds to which she would have previously succumbed. She found she was becoming more independent, assertive and aggressive, and even began to walk with a more confident, and masculine, swagger. After dreaming of a man called "Tim L." one night, she searched through obituaries in old newspapers on file at a local library, and eventually saw one for a man named Tim Leighton, who matched the vague donor description she'd been given of an 18-year old male who died in a motorcycle accident. Like Sonny, Claire wanted to contact her donor's family to thank them. After tracking them down, a meeting was arranged, during which the family confirmed that Tim had shared Claire's new-found robust constitution and cravings.

Such stories certainly leave us thinking about the nature of our soul and where it resides. Those that would like to read more on the subject might like to read Claire's book A Change of Heart, which was first published in 1997 and is available via Amazon.com.

    • Worlds first complete face transplant

After suffering from a rare for of cancer form more than 24 years Pascal Coler has been given a new life after having "almost all" of his face replaced with the face of an anonymous donor. That includes a new nose, new cheeks, new lips and even a new mouth.

"At first we were quite frightened to do the transplant," said Lantieri, the surgeon in charge, "We didn't know how the patient would tolerate the fact to have a new face."

To complete the operation the doctors had to painstakingly attach arteries, blood vessels and nerve endings to the new face, but after 16 hours the operation was complete.

Contrary to popular belief, Coler does not look like the donor, his facial structure has not been altered and Doctors believe he looks similar to how he would have looked without the disease.

"The operation revolutionized my life," Coler said. "People no longer stop and stare at me in the street. They don't make fun of me anymore."

    • Kidney snatcher- caught!

"The alleged mastermind of a kidney transplant scheme in India has admitted to his involvement in about 300 transplants over the last 12 to 13 years, police said Friday....Amit Kumar is accused of coercing, stealing or buying kidneys from healthy Indians and then selling them to foreigners for transplant.....Police in India have said that as many as 500 people may have each lost a kidney to the ring. Some told CNN they were forced to do so and not compensated."

This guy had over $250,000 in mixed currency on him and he had the nerve to declare his innocence.

I find it ironic that this happens, while I'm in the middle of reading Michael Crichton's book, NEXT. It's mostly about the world of genetics, but it touches on illegal harvesting of body parts.

    • Nurse admits stealing body parts of dead

      Oh Hell No!!!

A nurse admitted Wednesday he cut body parts from 244 corpses and helped forge paperwork so the parts, some of them diseased, could be used in unsuspecting patients.

Authorities say nurse Lee Cruceta was the lead cutter in a group that trafficked in more than 1,000 stolen body parts for the lucrative transplant market.

He pleaded guilty to conspiracy, taking part in a corrupt organization, abuse of a corpse and 244 counts each of theft and forgery. Cruceta, 35, also has pleaded guilty to related charges in New York and negotiated pleas to serve concurrent sentences of 6 1/2 to 20 years

    • Eye think you've got the wrong address...

Imagine the joy of receiving an unexpected gift and then opening it to find it's a human eyeball that's been wrongly delivered to you instead of a needy patient who is waiting for a transplant.

The eyeball was intended for a hospital patient in Hobart, Australia, but was wrongly delievered to a hotel patron randomly. The courier firm who made the 'balls-up' defended the mistake claiming it was down to a "failure in an internal handover process."

Don't worry, the eyeball was recovered and successfully transplanted.

      Eye don't know, whatever next?

    • L.A. Doctors report transplant breakthrough

In what's being called a major advance in organ transplants, doctors say they have developed a technique that could free many patients from having to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their lives.

The treatment involved weakening the patient's immune system, then giving the recipient bone marrow from the person who donated the organ. In one experiment, four of five kidney recipients were off immune-suppressing medicines up to five years later.

This is really a huge breakthrough that could save patients a lifetime of suffering.

    • Scientists One Step Closer To Brain Implants

US Researchers have made an important discovery that may lead to better connectivity between the brain and computer interfaces. Connecting electrodes to the nervous system is difficult because the tissue becomes inflamed when in contact with metal. This creates a layer of electrically insulating scar tissue that makes it harder to send or receive signals.

The new technology is based on a rubber-like polymer that soaks around the brain cells and then is connected to electrodes by the surgeon. Initially this is a breakthrough for prosthetics like bionic eyes or arms.
