Space elevator' could take humans into orbit
LONDON, England (CNN) -- A new space race is officially under way, and this one should have the sci-fi geeks salivating.
The project is a "space elevator," and some experts now believe that the concept is well within the bounds of possibility -- maybe even within our lifetimes.
A conference discussing developments in space elevator concepts is being held in Japan in November, and hundreds of engineers and scientists from Asia, Europe and the Americas are working to design the only lift that will take you directly to the one hundred-thousandth floor.
Despite these developments, you could be excused for thinking it all sounds a little far-fetched.
Indeed, if successfully built, the space elevator would be an unprecedented feat of human engineering.
A cable anchored to the Earth's surface, reaching tens of thousands of kilometers into space, balanced with a counterweight attached at the other end is the basic design for the elevator. 26 Cheerleaders get stuck in elevator and have to be resuced
How many cheerleaders can cram into an elevator? Apparently not 26. A group of teenage girls attending a cheerleading camp on the University of Texas got stuck and had to be rescued after trying to squeeze into an elevator at a residence hall Tuesday night.
One girl fainted and was treated at a hospital and released. Two others were treated at the scene.
The elevator doors refused to open after the pack of 14- to 17-year-olds descended from the fourth to the first floor, police said. Responding to a few panicked cell phone calls from the group, police and firefighters summoned an elevator repairman, who spent about 25 minutes extricating them.
Campus officials weren't amused.

Man falls down elevator shaft, meets woman who fell down the day before
If ever I've heard of an unusual place to meet new friends, the basement elevator shaft would definitely be up there with the weirdest.
A German man survived a 25ft fall down his apartment block's lift shaft after he landed on a lady that had fallen down it only 24 hours before.
The 27 year-old was uninjured after landing on the woman who had fallen down the day before. Doctors have reported that the 57-year-old is in a critical condition after sustaining injuries both in her original fall - and then again when Wilhelms landed on her. Madness: Trapped in Car 30
Nicholas White was a thirty-four-year-old production manager at Business Week. He was working late on a special assignment and wanted a cigarette. He told a colleague that he’d be right back and, leaving his jacket behind, headed downstairs. Thus commenced the longest smoke break of Nicholas White’s life, a harrowing experience that began at around eleven o’clock on a Friday night in October, 1999.
The Business Week offices were located on the forty-third floor of the McGraw-Hill Building in mid-town Manhattan. When White finished his cigarette, he returned to the lobby, got into Elevator Car No. 30 and pressed the button marked 43. The car accelerated. It was an express elevator, with no stops below the thirty-ninth floor, and the building was deserted. But after a moment, White felt a jolt. The lights went out, immediately flashed on again and then the elevator stopped.
He was eventually trapped in Car 30 for forty-one hours. He never did learn why the elevator stopped. There was talk of a power dip, but nothing definite. Meanwhile, White no longer has his job, which he’d held for fifteen years, and he’s lost all contact with his former colleagues. Now, he’s lost his apartment, spent all his money, and searched, mostly in vain, for paying work. White is currently unemployed.

The Bailong Elevator is located inside the World Heritage site Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China. The glass elevator runs along a cliff face and stretches 326 meters high. The first 154 meters runs through a underground shaft and the rest 172 meters outside the summit. The elevator takes 50 people per ride and takes about 2 minutes from top to bottom giving it a daily capacity of 18.000 people.
The elevator is the highest and heaviest outdoor elevator in the world but is facing an uncertain future since it was built in 1999 without consulting the World Heritage Committee and the construction of new structures are forbidden.
