New green technology controls fire ants without harmful chemicals or poisons.
What started out as a heat lamp, a waffle iron, a timer, and one retired Texas rancher, has evolved into a non-toxic fire ant control system with two U.S. Patents to its credit. This is a “green”, long-term solution to the fire ant nightmare and it is perfectly named, The AntAgonizer.
The guiding principles of the invention were discovered by long time Mills County Rancher Sid Brooks. Sid became fascinated by fire ants and their behavior around food and electricity. After some ideas and experimentation, Sid came up with a rudimentary contraption that was both killing and driving away fire ant colonies. Some ants would die on the spot. Others would wander around in circles a bit. According to Sid, “They were dead, they just hadn’t been notified yet.” Without these foragers, food was not getting to the queen and her eggs. Colonies were abandoned.
The AntAgonizer is now top tier technology. Development and design is by Alan Abele, a brilliant engineer with eight U.S. Patents to his credit, several of those in the aerospace industry. Two are for The Antagonizer, one for the innovative timer that controls pulses of infrared energy. The second is for the methodology of the unit, in other words how it kills and controls fire ants. Abele stated, “This product represents the fusion of the biological and engineering sciences and it works.”
The AntAgonizer uses small pulses of infrared energy to disrupt and ultimately destroy fire ant colonies. The system controls fire ants without using toxic chemicals that can poison property, contaminate water resources and endanger children, pets, livestock, fish, waterfowl, and beneficial insects.
The Antagonizer has been in development for almost seven years, says Ginger Spies, AntAgonizer principle. “During that time we have learned a lot about the behavior of fire ants and we have heard stories that are just amazing. We know of a fire ant attack that ended a funeral service and sent people running for their cars; of golfers who couldn’t putt out because of infested greens; of football players who were taken to the hospital during a game because the field had been treated with pesticides earlier that day; and numerous attacks on small children and the elderly. Fire ants are truly capable of spectacular injury and damage.
Sid Brooks, retired rancher, has started a movement and it’s one he hopes will contribute to a major paradigm shift for the way we treat the Earth and ourselves.

Nintendo 'least green tech firm'
Games firm Nintendo has come bottom of a ranking of the world's most eco-friendly electronics firms.
The quarterly Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics ranks 18 electronics firms by how green their production processes and products are.
In the latest guide most firms have seen their ranking plummet as the charity introduced new, stricter guidelines for evaluating companies.
Nintendo said its scored low because it had not provided data for the survey.
"Greenpeace chose to conduct a survey and produce a report, which graded companies upon the voluntary submission of information," the firm said in a statement.
"Nintendo decided not to take part in the survey and were therefore 'ungraded' in the resulting report.
But Greenpeace countered the company's statement and insisted it had been graded.
"There is no choice," Iza Kruszewska, toxics campaigner for Greenpeace, told BBC News.
She said the charity had regularly contacted the games firm since 2007 but had not had any response. The charity had been forced to use information from Nintendo's website, she said.
""They've decided not to engage," she said. Games firm Nintendo has come bottom of a ranking of the world's most eco-friendly electronics firms. ... more -
Deleware approves U.S.'s First Offshore Wind Farm
The proposed new wind farm, which will (amazingly) be the first of its kind in the States, will consist of 150 turbines placed 12 miles off-shore. Hopefully this will start a trend of widespread adoption of another viable alternative energy source, as I'm pretty sure harnessing wind is cleaner than burning coal. First-ever Fuel Cell Vehicle Dealership Network
Reinforcing its commitment to further advance Honda fuel cell technology, American Honda announced that three Southern California dealerships will comprise the world’s first fuel cell automobile dealership network. Power Honda Costa Mesa, Honda of Santa Monica and Scott Robinson Honda are each located in close proximity to hydrogen refueling stations and will be well-positioned to support Honda’s growing base of FCX Clarity customers.
American Honda is working with its dealer partners to implement processes for fuel cell vehicle lease, delivery and service support for the duration of their leases. Establishing a dedicated sales network and service infrastructure provides customers with the best balance of convenience and the highest quality of service. Good news from Nanosolar Blog
Greetings, All -- Below is an article related to the emerging debate on distributed versus centralized clean energy systems from our friend Bill Brown at New Mexico Global Warming up in Taos, New Mexico.
Bill Brown writes that this "article treats the debate, and argues for (1) strong development of distributed systems with less need for new transmission lines in the short term, and (2) centralized systems with long distance, high voltage lines only after 80 percent of the electricity the transmission lines carry come from clean, renewable sources. [Note the author's significant comment re electrically powered transportation: "We don't know what the future will bring. Plug-in hybrids or all-electric vehicles could provide sufficient storage to miniaturize the grid while allowing the grid to handle a much higher proportion of intermittent electric generation."...]
"The reality of clean energy development currently lies between the extremes of fully centralized and fully distributed solar and wind systems. Clearly, distributed solar panels and residential wind turbines continue to be employed by individual property owners throughout the country. Equally clearly, large centralized solar and interconnected wind power systems continue to be built throughout the country. However, an emerging middle ground is being considered (and constructed) via community or municipal sized clean energy power systems.
Nanosolar of California, for example [in an April 16, 2008 press release] believes "... meaningful scale for solar will come foremost from utility-scale solar power plants, in particular from municipal solar power plants of 2-10MW (two to ten MegaWatts) in size. These are rows of solar panels mounted onto the ground of free fields at the outskirts of towns and cities, feeding power directly into the municipal electricity grid." Such power plants -- and they could also be wind power plants -- could provide communities with more cost effective clean energy solutions than fully decentralized systems, e.g., solar panels or wind turbines on every property. Nanosolar, re solar panels, comments: "While rooftops are surely a good application too for solar panels, it is a business that’s difficult to scale rapidly in a truly meaningful way. Crawling onto rooftops and mounting solar panels in compliance with building codes is fundamentally always a somewhat more expensive proposition." Further, "By feeding power directly into the (local) distribution grid, they (utility scale solar power plants) avoid the (long-haul) transmission grid which tends to be heavily taxed in many regions of the world."

Many possibilities for our nation, communities, and individuals in terms of a new, clean energy future and economy are apparent within this debate. In my next post, I hope to treat some of these possibilities, many of which are being turned into reality by those looking ahead to a future free of the inefficiencies, escalating costs, hidden costs, and overall problems with old technology, obsolescent fossil fuels.

Who needs gas?? Top off your car with sugar and tequila
Time to stock up on that Patron. Not for you, you big lush, but for the latest in green technology. According to C/Net, all you need is $9,995, and you can have your own ethanol creating "fuel pump". The EFuel100 MicroFueler is suppose to be able to create up to 35 gallons of ethanol a week. All you need is to connect it to a power and water source, add sugar and yeast or discarded alcohol. Sounds easy enough, but don't fault me for being a sceptic, but hey if you have 10,000, give it a try and keep me posted. For now just check out the link....

Barack Obama says "I don't think that we can take nuclear power off the table."
Q: Would you be in favor of developing more nuclear power to reduce oil dependency?
A: I don't think that we can take nuclear power off the table. What we have to make sure of is that we have the capacity to store waste properly and safely, and that we reduce whatever threats might come from terrorism. And if we can do that in a technologically sound way, then we should pursue it. If we can't, we should not. But there is no magic bullet on energy. We're going to have to look at all the various options.
