    • Orphan deer adopted by fox hounds

A young deer that had been abandoned by his mother has forged an extraordinary relationship with a pack of fox hounds that have accepted him as part of their 'family'.

When the pack found the deer shivering on huntsman Adrian Thompson's grounds just hours after he had been born, the dogs immediately accepted the animal. Since then, the 10-week-old deer called Bam Bam has become a loyal follower of huntsman Adrian Thompson, 42, and his pack of 60 hounds.

Mr Thompson said: "Now Bam Bam thinks he's a Fox Hound because they all treat him like one of their own. He won't be going on any hunts though - he doesn't have the stamina for it."

Mr Thompson's wife, Karen, 41, stated: "Bam Bam seems most content when he's ambling along with the hounds. He's about the same size as them now so he fits in perfectly and walks along with the pack like they're his brothers and sisters."

Bam Bam will stay with the Thompson family until they rehome him at some point next year in a private park where he will be able to join a herd and finally learn how to be a deer.

    • Wildlife Sanctuary Days Away From Closing

ELLIJAY, Ga. -- Most people know Criag Cylke simply as "Grizzly". He's raised abandoned bears and nursed injured predators. Now, he's scared the animals he loves could soon be euthanized.

"We're down to the point now, this will probably be our lat week, this coming week," Cycle said.

The Ellijay Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is the largest in Georgia, and one of just a handful that can handle large animals. The wildlife sanctuary lost its federal funding. Now, private donations have slowed to a trickle. The animals go through two tons of dog food and two tons of meet every month. The non-profit organization is $300,000 in debt.

"If we go down, there's not going to be many places for these animals," he said. "In fact, the bears that you see here today, the state will probably have to put down because there's no home for them."

It's devastating news to Chris Enfinger. He came for summer camp one year and kept on coming. He's now a volunteer. "Just to see them, after all the time I've spent with them, just to get put down because they can't go anywhere, that would be really sad for me."

Dr. Lyn Lewis is a vet at the Appalachian Animal Hospital. They donate about $40,000 in care every year. He says the sanctuary is a safety net for all of Georgia. "The wildlife would suffer," he said. "We already have endangered species in this area. I firmly believe that this sanctuary keeps many of those animals from going extinct in this region."

Cykle and his wife haven't taken salaries in three years. They've sold off personal assets to keep these animals fed and keep their doors open.

Now, the money is gone. Some of the animals have no where to go. The center is days away from closing. And still, the man called "Grizzly" tenaciously holds on to hope.

"We have a hope. And that hope is our Georgia people and our lovely neighbors in the surrounding states. If they just hear the message of what's happening here, then they can make a difference."

A six-legged fawn is recovering from losing one of its two tails following an attack by two dogs in one forest. The odd creature, born with the two tails and six legs, was found after two dogs attacked it in Everett Springs, Georgia in America. Unfortunately the attack was so serious the animal had to have one of her tails amputated by vets.

    • Deer causes chaos in Italy

A wild deer fleeing summer storms brought chaos to an Italian city centre when it ran amok.

The 24-stone deer jumped over tables at local cafes, overturned potted plants and destroyed various stands selling produce from local shops before it was cornered in the city of Bolzano.

Numerous policemen and hunters as well as the city's fire brigade spent several hours trying to catch the deer without success.

Eventually the animal was trapped in a car park where it was shot after smashing a shop window.

Two people required treatment when they suffered cuts and bruises after being butted.

    • A Unicorn In Tuscany

A young deer was born in an animal shelter and has a single horn bang in the middle of his forehead. The speculation is that since this anomaly, although rare, is not unknown, deer with a single horn on their forehead may be at the origin of the "Unicorn Myths". Some years ago, there were a couple or so white goats with a single horn sprouting from their forehead. It seems that their two horns welded and spiraled around each other. There again, the classical morphology of the unicorn depicts a white animal about the size of a large goat or a small deer, with a goat's "goatee" (hence the origin of that word), although it has a horse-like head and a mane. Its hooves are cleft like those of sheep, goats, deer, cattle, etc., and its tail is long and rather like a lion's tail.

There is no smoke without fire, they say, and many myths are born from unusual events and individuals, animals included. They have a basis in reality, and the mythification process embroiders and magnifies the original event and character.

    • 'Unicorn' born in Italy

A roe deer with a single horn in the middle of its head has found fame as the "Unicorn" of Tuscany.

The 10-month-old deer was born in captivity at the Centre of Natural Sciences, a nature reserve near Prato.
The 'unicorn' photographed in Tuscany, Italy

While single-horned deers have been spotted before, this particular buck has a uniquely central horn, thought to be the result of a genetic flaw.

"This is a demonstration that the fabled unicorn, which we all know from icons and legends, probably was not just a fantasy.

"It was probably an animal like this one, with a natural anomaly," said Gilberto Tozzi, the director of the centre.

    • 'Unicorn' found in Tuscany wildlife park

An animal expert in Italy is claiming to have found proof of the existence of unicorns after he stumbled upon a young roe deer with a single horn growing from the centre of its forehead.

The 10-month old animal is part of a herd of deer that are otherwise equipped with two antlers at the Prato natural science centre in Tuscany.

''It's proof that the mythical unicorn celebrated in iconography and legends was probably not just a fantastic creature but a real animal: a deer or other species with an anomaly similar to that of our deer,'' said the centre's director Gilberto Tozzi.

Unicorns have been a fixture in mythology and art since pre-Roman times, often said to be solitary creature unless accompanied by a maiden, with horns that can be used to cure poisonings.

Christian writers promoted unicorns as symbols of Christ.

Marco Polo claimed to have spotted a unicorn on his travels, but from his description of an "ugly" animal wallowing in mud, it is believed he had stumbled upon a rhino.

Tozzi said his "unicorn" was shy. "Our deer may be aware that he is different as he doesn't allow himself to be seem very easily," he said.

The mother of the unusual deer was brought to the centre a few years ago after being hit and injured by a car in Italy's Apennine mountains.
