Times Are Hard: Mobsters Resort to Extorting Hot Dog Vendor
A little bragging about his business turned a Bronx hot dog vendor into a mob punching bag, police said yesterday.
The victim, who is in his 50s, ran into the thugs at Michael's Italian Family Restaurant on Boston Road in Eastchester, cops said. While chatting over beers during the summer, he told them he made a decent living hawking food from his cart nearby.
"If you are doing so good, then you can give us two Cs a week," one of the mobsters told the victim, a police source said. "I guess in this economic climate the mob isn't so fussy any more," the source added.
When the vendor refused to fork over $200 in "protection money," the thugs roughed him up twice in August and set the cart on fire in September, cops said.
Arrested and charged with assault, extortion and other crimes were Patrick Lombardo, 60; Robert (Bobby Fingers) Francella, 49, and Gregory Monzeglio, 44. All three have long rap sheets ranging from murder to assault. Cops described Francella, who served 24 years for killing his girlfriend, and Lombardo as associates of the Gambino crime family. One of New York's finest was arrested early Sunday morning after pushing a Jersey City cop in the chest in the parking lot of a Downtown Jersey City bar, police said.
Michael Velazquez Jr., 23, of Tompkins Avenue in Brooklyn, was charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and failure to disperse, reports said.
Jersey City Police responded to calls about a disturbance in the parking lot of the Sand Bar on Marin Boulevard around 3 a.m., reports said.
Police found a large gathering of men and told them to move along, reports said. But Velazquez yelled that he was a police officer and did not have to listen to the Jersey City cops, and shoved one of the Jersey City officers, reports said.
After being restrained, Velazquez was taken to the East District Precinct on Seventh Street for processing, where he continued to be verbally abusive and it was confirmed that he is a New York City police officer, reports said.
A spokesman from the New York Police Department said that he had no record regarding the incident, but added that any uniformed officers who are arrested are suspended without pay for 30 days pending an investigation. Oasis brothers assaulted on stage
A man in his thirties has been arrested after Oasis' Gallagher brothers were “cold-cocked” in front of 25,000 fans Sunday night on stage at the Virgin Festival on the Toronto Island.
Toronto police say the man either leapt from the crowd or the wings of the stage during the final performance by British rock band Oasis.
The man tackled Noel Gallagher and knocked down his brother, lead singer Liam Gallagher, who was midway through singing Oasis hit “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” before he was seized by security.
“The audience seemed shocked at first, the fan came out of nowhere,” said concertgoer Ryan Markle. “There was a lot of gasping and yelling.”
The band dropped its instruments and left the stage almost immediately, prompting the lights to go on and leaving many of the 25,000 fans disgruntled.
After a five minute hiatus, Noel Gallagher emerged to lead the group through another song before Liam Gallagher emerged silently to sing their popular hit “Wonderwall.”
The concert concluded abruptly at 10:30 p.m. with a cover of the Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus.”

Policemen sacked for youth attack
Two policemen have been sacked and a third told to resign after they attacjed a teenager and then tried to cover it up.
The police watchdog (IPCC) said two constables from Northamptonshire Police, aged 42 and 43, were found guilty of seven charges by a disciplinary hearing on Friday. A third officer, aged 50, was required to resign after pleading guilty to three charges. IPCC Commissioner Amerdeep Somal branded the officers a "disgrace".
The 16-year-old youth was arrested in Daventry, Northamptonshire, in November 2006, after running from a car which was initially believed to be stolen. The youth had been wanted for breach of bail and was on warrant for failing to appear at court. He claimed that after his arrest, the officers used PAVA spray on him and threatened and intimidated him while driving him around the Daventry area for over two hours. He said they also tried to plant drugs on him.
The officers, who were part of the Northamptonshire West Tactical Team, were subsequently charged with the criminal offence of misconduct in public office and one was charged with assault. However the decision was later taken by the Crown Prosecution Service not to proceed with a criminal prosecution against the officers and to make them face a disciplinary hearing instead. Libya 'retaliates' after Swiss charge Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's son...
Libya has taken "worryingly retaliatory measures" against Switzerland following the recent arrest of leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's son in Geneva, according to the Swiss Foreign Ministry.
Col Gaddafi's government has recalled some of its diplomats from Switzerland, reduced flights between the countries, stopped processing visa requests from Swiss citizens, demanded the closure of Swiss firms in Libya and detained two Swiss citizens.
Swiss foreign minister Micheline Calmy-Rey has formally complained about the moves to her Libyan counterpart and has advised citizens not to travel to Libya.
Swiss International Air Lines said Libya has reduced its flights between Zurich and Tripoli from three per week to one.
The airline's spokesman said: "The notice from Libya was very surprising and short notice."
Libya also announced a similar cut in Geneva flights with Libyan airline Afriqiyah.
Col Gaddafi's youngest son Hannibal, 32, and his wife Aline were arrested last Wednesday after an incident in a five-star hotel in Geneva.
He was released on bail two days later after posting bail of 500,000 Swiss Francs. His wife, who is nine months pregnant, was taken to hospital during police questioning.
The couple were charged with assaulting two of their staff, a Moroccan man and a Tunisian woman, with a belt and coat hanger. The woman was hospitalised.
Mr Gaddafi, whose real name is Motassim Bilal Gaddafi, and his wife deny the allegations. They had arrived in Geneva on July 5 for the birth of their child.
Switzerland have dispatched a diplomatic delegation to Tripoli to provide the Libyan authorities with more details about the arrest and "to prevent a crisis between the two countries", the Swiss foreign ministry said.
Libya is the largest provider of oil to Switzerland. Hannibal Gaddafi has had previous run-ins with the law. In 2005, he was convicted by a French court for striking his pregnant companion in a Paris hotel. He was given a four-month suspended prison sentence and a 500 Euro fine.
He also was at the centre of a separate commotion in 2004, when Paris police stopped him for speeding on the Champs Elysees and his bodyguards attacked several officers.
Two of the bodyguards were taken into custody but released after a delegation from the Libyan embassy showed up at the police station and apologised.

'Batman' accused of assaulting mom and sister
LONDON - Batman star Christian Bale was arrested Tuesday over allegations of assaulting his mother and sister, police and British media said.
British media had reported that Bale's mother and sister complained they were assaulted by the 34-year-old actor at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday night, a day before the European premiere of his latest film, "The Dark Knight."
The women made the allegation at a local police station in southern England on Monday, Britain's Press Association news agency said.
Asked whether Bale had been arrested, a police spokesman did not refer to him by name but said: "A 34-year-old man attended a central London police station this morning by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault." He said the man was still in custody but gave no further details.
The spokesman spoke on condition of anonymity because force policy did not authorize him to be identified. British police do not name suspects before they are formally charged.
U.S.-based representatives for Bale didn't immediately return messages seeking comment. Repeated phone calls to Bale's London representative went unanswered.
The Sun newspaper said police didn't question the actor Monday because they didn't want to interfere with the premiere of the movie.
Wales-born Bale first made a splash as the child star of Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun" in 1987. His screen credits also include "American Psycho," "The Machinist" and "Batman Begins."
In "The Dark Knight," Bale reprises the role of wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter-ego Batman, a brooding vigilante superhero still scarred by the murder of his parents.
The film, which stars the late Heath Ledger as Batman's nemesis The Joker, took in a record $158.4 million at the box office in its opening weekend in the U.S. last week. Asylum seekers assaulted by private security teams, says report
Britain's treatment of asylum seekers has never been worse, according to Labour MP Diane Abbott.
Abott's comments came after the publication of a report detailing nearly 300 claims of assault on asylum seekers by security staff hired by the Home Office to forcibly deport them.
"I have just read one of the most shocking reports about our immigration system that I have seen in 20 years as a member of parliament," she said.
The Outsourcing Abuse report by Medical Justice, which provides medical and legal advice to deportees, found evidence of long-term injuries to asylum seekers.
The incidents include accusations of excessive force, beatings and racial abuse, resulting in injuries ranging from handcuff-bruised wrists to swollen faces, and fractured ribs, wrists and ankles.
Abbott said the report detailed "frightening state-sponsored violence" and accused the Home Office of a "complete failure" to investigate the allegations.
She added that it was a damning verdict on ministers' ability to "inject even a shred of humanity into a failing immigration system".
"It is a test of our society how we treat the weakest and most vulnerable," she said. "There is no reason in 2008 why a wealthy, civilised country should treat people like this."
Harriet Wistrich, a London lawyer who co-authored the report, said that the UK's international reputation as a place of justice has become "more and more tarnished".
The current asylum system was re-traumatising those who fled from violence in their home countries, she added.
"These allegations amount to torture," she said.
Apollo Okello, a failed asylum seeker from Uganda currently facing re-detention and removal, claimed that he underwent "psychological and mental torture" during his time in detention.
"They are doing it to make life more difficult for you so that you accept going back," he said. "All they care about is that you have left the country and they have met their target for removals." Britain's treatment of asylum seekers has never been worse, according to Labour MP Diane Abbott. ... more -
