Nuclear Fuel Recycling: More Trouble Than It's Worth
From the first Presidential debate:
McCain: "And Senator Obama says he's for nuclear, but he's against reprocessing and he's against storing."
Obama: "I -- I just have to correct the record here. I have never said that I object to nuclear waste. What I've said is that we have to store it safely."
From article:
"Separated plutonium, being only weakly radioactive, is easily carried off—whereas the plutonium in spent fuel is mixed with fission products that emit lethal gamma rays. Because of its great radioactivity, spent fuel can be transported only inside casks weighing tens of tons, and its plutonium can only be recovered with great difficulty, typically behind thick shielding using sophisticated, remotely operated equipment. So unseparated plutonium in spent fuel poses a far smaller risk of ending up in the wrong hands." From the first Presidential debate: ... more -
Nuclear Waste: Achilles' Heel of the Fake Green Technology
As Nuclear Waste Languishes, Expense to U.S. Rises
WASHINGTON — Forgotten but not gone, the waste from more than 100 nuclear reactors that the federal government was supposed to start accepting for burial 10 years ago is still at the reactor sites, at least 20 years behind schedule. But it is making itself felt in the federal budget.
Each reactor typically creates about 20 tons of waste a year, which is approximately two new casks, at roughly $1 million each. If a repository or interim site opened, clearing the backlog would take decades, experts say. At present, waste is in temporary storage at 122 sites in 39 states.

The first two minutes of "Accelerating Hanford Cleanup" are eye opening and the amount of radioactive waste and work needed there is staggering.

Nothing good about it!
When Chernobyl's Number Four reactor blew up in April 1986, spewing radioactive fallout across Belarus, workers quickly slapped a giant concrete sarcophagus over the site to contain the hazard. It was supposed to be a temporary fix.
Is Wired magazine totally pro nuke, or what?

Jackson Browne Campaigns for Edwards
Jackson Browne says that Democrat John Edwards is the most progressive candidate with a chance at winning the White House, and that he would do the most for working-class Americans.
Edwards frequently says he wants to expand safe, renewable fuels opportunities and would oppose the construction of more nuclear power plants.
He said Edwards is "certainly the most progressive of the candidates that have a chance" at winning the presidency. He said that Edwards had the best solutions for the Iraq war, health care and nuclear power, and that he would faithfully represent working Americans.
I agree John Edwards is a solid choice and I'm considering him carefully. Jackson Browne says that Democrat John Edwards is the most progressive candidate with a chance at winning the White House, and that he... more -
