    • Prince of Wales resumes GM crops debate

      The Prince of Wales has resumed his battle against GM crops, claiming that the technology has partly contributed to the number of small farmers in India committing suicide.

      In a speech to the Indian environmental pressure group Navdanya, the Prince pushed for a return to more traditional methods of farming.

      It is less than two months since he provoked a heated debate about GM with an interview with The Daily Telegraph in which he said GM crops risked causing the world's worst environmental disaster.

      He was criticised for being a "Luddite", talking "biased baloney" and abusing his position.

      But in his latest speech, delivered by video-link, he said he intended to continue speaking out about the controversial subject.

      "The reason I keep sticking my 60-year-old head above an increasingly dangerous parapet is not because it is good for my health," he said.

      "But precisely because I believe fundamentally that unless we work with nature in a myriad of ways such as this we will fail to restore the equilibrium we need in order to survive on this planet."

      He highlighted the sensitive issue of small farmers who have killed themselves in India after getting into debt.

      Although the suicides took place before the introduction of GM crops, some anti-GM campaigners believe farmers were pushed into buying the more expensive modified crop, which then failed to produce a significant yield.

      This is contested by the agricultural biotech companies and the link is still unclear.

      But the Prince referred to "the truly appalling and tragic rate of small farmer suicides in India stemming in part from the failure of many GM crop varieties".

      He went on: "The debate really is very simple. Do you think we can solve (the food crisis) by using traditional agricultural practices enhanced by research to increase yields, but within a truly sustainable framework?

      "Or do you think that is impossible and that instead it is worth taking all the risks that I would argue are associated with GM technology? To me, the answer is pretty straightforward.

      "I want to see trust being put back in individual farmers, with their knowledge of the land and their skills honed over generations."

      Pete Riley, from GM Freeze, an anti-GM campaign group, supported the Prince and said: "I think the Prince is right to raise concerns. This is a significant issue in the southern part of the world."

    • How Monsanto really makes GMOs

      GMO's are made by manipulation of extremely deadly viruses & bacteria that have been engineered to be IMMUNE TO ANTIBIOTICS, such as E. coli (Pause video at 8:08). Monsanto spends millions of dollars each month to "sugar" coat and hide the truth of what they are doing or what is really behind how GMO's are made.

      This video straight-forwardly explains the scientific facts how Monsanto manufactures their GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) by removing all the corporate propaganda, the "smoke & mirrors" if you will.

      **Please be warned, the once the mask is removed from what you are eating & feeding your children each day, it will outrage you and shock you to the core.

      Monsanto's greed combined with their quest to totally monopolize all aspects of food on the planet, has knowingly allowed the proverbial Reaper free upon the world.

      GMO's are now acting much like the deadly virus and pre-cancer cells they are made from... by infecting other organisms that were once pure and healthy.

      The people of the world should be demanding Monsanto be held for crimes against humanity for the atrocities they have committed and what can be reasonably seen as the start of the end to all life as we know it.

      The Bee's disappearance is in perfect unison with the time line of Monsanto's release of GMO's; this can not be argued but due to Monsanto's influence of corruption in governments across the globe, any scientist that tries to inform the public and raise the alarm about the Bee's & GMO's is destroyed financially, as well as their careers'.

      Monsanto is the MOST ruthless corporation in the world, which basically controls many governments due to their near limitless resources, money and their "campaign contributions".

      They buy WHO they need and crush those that try to stand in their way.

      Now that you know, what will you do?

      Will YOU decided to fight, right now, this very day or will you put it off for some other time?

      After watching these videos, will you also knowingly look the other way and FEED your family GM foods; even though you now know you could be killing or permanently harming your child/family??? If so, call Monsanto for a job, for you have disgraced and shamed yourself for knowingly poisoning the people you claim to love and PROTECT!

      ....BUT

      If you are OUTRAGED at Monsanto's poisoning our food, milk (see my other video on milk!) and health; Please do the following actions, do them once a week... make a difference:

      1) Call and WRITE (pen & paper) you're Legislators

      (Emails are the very last thing you should do; most are scanned by software and are blocked/deleted when they contain certain key words. This is a fact.)

      Demand:

      2) That they FULLY endorse: "H.R. 6636 GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOOD RIGHT TO KNOW ACT"

      3) An immediate moratorium on all GMO's and their Byproducts!

      4) FDA change their findings on GMO's being "Generally Recognized As Safe"! This was done with ZERO testing by the FDA!

      5) Demand a full investigation into the criminal conflicts of interest as it pertains to the head personal of Monsanto and the FDA being one in the same.

      6) Demand congress pass a "whistle blowers protection" for all professional scientists so that Corporations, Universities and Colleges can no longer manipulate their research.
      ___________-
      This is the description of the video written by the member who uploaded it. I concur with it. We need to wake up. Now.

    • FDA issues rules for GMO animals- "Pork that have been engineered with mouse ...

      FDA won't require label for genetically altered meats

      The debate over whether to label genetically modified foods shifted a step away from disclosure today as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a draft guidance saying the agency will not require a label on food made from genetically engineered animals.

      The draft will be open for public comment until Nov. 18.

      The FDA will study all genetically modified foods for safety issues before approving them for market consumption, the draft said. There are no genetically engineered animal products on the market, the FDA's Web site said, although some products are undergoing a safety review.

      "It is likely that for the first [genetically engineered] animal approval(s), we will convene a public advisory committee meeting prior to the completion of the approval," the FDA's Web site said.

      The FDA will regulate any recombinant DNA modification under the animal as a "new animal drug" under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, even though some of the some of the genetic modifications might involve splicing the DNA of one animal into a completely different species. Examples include the insertion of the spider-silk protein gene into goats for the production of a filament-rich milk and the introduction of a mouse gene into pigs to alter the composition of pig manure.

      The classification would allow manufacturers to avoid having to use a separate label for any products coming from genetically engineered animals. The FDA says the foods would undergo strict testing and that any approved foods would be safe for human consumption.

      But that's missing the point, said Michael Hansen, senior scientist at Consumers Union. Many label requirements have little to do with food safety.

      "We require labeling of juices whether they come from concentrate or if they're fresh-squeezed or whether milk is homogenized or not, so along those lines, we think that all genetically engineered animals present in the food chain should labeled as such," Hansen said.

      Other problems could arise if genetically modified animals get into the wild population, Hansen said.

      It's called the Trojan Gene Hypothesis, Hansen said — the idea that the offspring of genetically engineered animals are weak. For example, some salmon are engineered to grow to larger sizes. Salmon choose their mates based partially on the size of the male, so the genetically altered fish would be preferable. However, genetically engineered fish have fewer offspring that have a lower survival rate, so the salmon population could decrease dramatically after only a few generations of breeding, Hansen said.

    • FDA proposes approval process for genetically engineered animals

      The regulations would treat the creatures like drugs. Critics fear that environmental concerns aren't being given proper weight.
      By Karen Kaplan and Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
      10:36 AM PDT, September 18, 2008
      The Food and Drug Administration today opened the way for a bevy of genetically engineered salmon, cows and other animals to leap from the laboratory to the marketplace, unveiling an approval process that would treat the modified creatures like drugs.

      The guidelines for the first time make explicit the regulatory hoops companies would have to jump through to sell salmon that grow twice as fast as wild fish, pigs with high levels of healthy omega-3 fatty acids in their meat or goats that produce beneficial proteins in their milk.

      These pigs may end up helping your heart..."It's about time the federal government has acknowledged that these animals are on [the] doorstep and need to be regulated to ensure their safety," said Greg Jaffe, director of the project on biotechnology at the Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington.

      Many experts, however, fear that the proposed regulations do not go far enough to protect and reassure the public. In particular, they argue that the approval process would be highly secretive to protect the commercial interests of the companies involved and that the new rules do not place sufficient weight on the environmental impact of what many consider to be Frankenstein animals.

      Animals can't be treated exactly like drugs, said Jaydee Hanson, a policy analyst at the Center for Food Safety in Washington. "Drugs don't go out and breed with each other. When a drug gets loose, you figure you can control it. When a bull gets loose, it would be harder to corral."

      The draft guidelines represent an effort to formalize procedures that the agency is already following, said Randall Lutter, a deputy commissioner for policy at the FDA. They show "how we have been and how we will continue to regulate genetically engineered animals," he said.

      The genetically modified animals have a variety of potential uses. Some, like many agricultural crops now in use, are more disease resistant. One company, for example, has produced a cow that is not susceptible to mad cow disease.

      Others are more nutritious or grow faster, improving the diet and enhancing farmers' profits. Some would serve as sources for organs for human transplants, expanding the small pool of donor organs now available. Others, called biopharm animals, would be used to produce drugs such as insulin, which are now manufactured in yeast or bacteria.

      "There are very compelling and real benefits for humans and animals" from genetic engineering, said William Flynn of FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine. "But we must show that they are safe before they enter the marketplace."

      The new regulations do not cover cloned animals, most pets and research animals. Clones are genetic replicas of existing animals, and the FDA has already determined that they are safe. Pets and research animals are unlikely to enter the food chain.

      Only one genetically engineered animal is now being sold in the United States, a glow-in-the dark aquarium fish called a zebra. The FDA approved it because it is not eaten and its need for warm water effectively precludes it from escaping confinement.

    • Why Schools Should Remove Gene-Altered Foods from Their Cafeterias

      Before the Appleton Wisconsin high school replaced their cafeteria's processed foods with wholesome, nutritious food, the school was described as out-of-control. There were weapons violations, student disruptions, and a cop on duty full-time. After the change in school meals, the students were calm, focused, and orderly. There were no more weapons violations, and no suicides, expulsions, dropouts, or drug violations. The new diet and improved behavior has lasted for seven years, and now other schools are changing their meal programs with similar results.

      Years ago, a science class at Appleton found support for their new diet by conducting a cruel and unusual experiment with three mice. They fed them the junk food that kids in other high schools eat everyday. The mice freaked out. Their behavior was totally different than the three mice in the neighboring cage. The neighboring mice had good karma; they were fed nutritious whole foods and behaved like mice. They slept during the day inside their cardboard tube, played with each other, and acted very mouse-like.

      The junk food mice, on the other hand, destroyed their cardboard tube, were no longer nocturnal, stopped playing with each other, fought often, and two mice eventually killed the third and ate it. After the three month experiment, the students rehabilitated the two surviving junk food mice with a diet of whole foods. After about three weeks, the mice came around.

      Sister Luigi Frigo repeats this experiment every year in her second grade class in Cudahy, Wisconsin, but mercifully, for only four days. Even on the first day of junk food, the mice's behavior "changes drastically." They become lazy, antisocial, and nervous. And it still takes the mice about two to three weeks on unprocessed foods to return to normal. One year, the second graders tried to do the experiment again a few months later with the same mice, but this time the animals refused to eat the junk food.

      Across the ocean in Holland, a student fed one group of mice genetically modified (GM) corn and soy, and another group the non-GM variety. The GM mice stopped playing with each other and withdrew into their own parts of the cage. When the student tried to pick them up, unlike their well-behaved neighbors, the GM mice scampered around in apparent fear and tried to climb the walls. One mouse in the GM group was found dead at the end of the experiment.

      It's interesting to note that the junk food fed to the mice in the Wisconsin experiments also contained genetically modified ingredients. And although the Appleton school lunch program did not specifically attempt to remove GM foods, it happened anyway. That's because GM foods such as soy and corn and their derivatives are largely found in processed foods. So when the school switched to unprocessed alternatives, almost all ingredients derived from GM crops were taken out automatically.

      Does this mean that GM foods negatively affect the behavior of humans or animals? It would certainly be irresponsible to say so on the basis of a single student mice experiment and the results at Appleton. On the other hand, it is equally irresponsible to say that it doesn't.

      Driven by the increasingly pressing need to provide a stable food supply for its surging population (1.3 billion and growing), China has decided to engineer its own "Green Revolution" by embarking on a massive $3.5 billion GM crops R&D initiative, reports Science's Richard Stone. With this new biotechnology infrastructure in place, the Chinese hope to discover and patent their own genes "of great value" -- engaging in direct competition with the likes of Monsanto and ADM -- and to help their farms evolve "from high-input and extensive cultivation" to "high-tech and intensive cultivation."

    • St-Isidore seed dealer experimenting with hemp

      Grow Hemp for the War, " says a World War II ad found on the back of a 1943 map of Iowa. More than 60 years down the road, hemp is back, for another type of combat: the one against high energy prices and agri-food multinationals.

      Marc Bercier grows hemp on the lower part of a field behind his St-Isidore seed cleaning facility. He's testing 100 varieties and hopes to soon find the right one to produce vegetable oil and market it as a Canadian substitute for virgin olive oil.
      "I'm anti-multinationals," Bercier says, standing inside a container housing his new oil press. The German-made press will allow him to extract oil for human consumption from hemp and camiline (false flax) seeds, both very rich in Omega-3s.

      The press can also extract oil from soybeans, which can be used as a green fuel. One day, a soybean-burning co-generator will provide all the electricity and heat required to dry grain and operate the Marc Bercier Seed Cleaning Center.
      Bercier's tractors and combine could also run on soybean oil. No big company will get rich off his diesel bill anymore.

      Like his neighbours that grow cash crops, Bercier is currently enjoying very high grain prices. But along with them have come sharp price increases for farm inputs like fuel, fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides. These products are all controlled by large multinationals, Bercier notes.

      Bercier's main business is in itself an everyday combat against the Monsantos and Pioneers (DuPont) of this world, that own the patents over genetically modified (GMO) seeds. Bercier successfully grows and markets non-GMO seeds, competing against much larger feed companies and co-ops that resell GMO seeds and the weed- and pest-control chemicals that come along.

      Grain prices could drop again as soon a in a year of two, but high input prices are there to stay, Bercier predicts.
      "We can't control much the price we are paid for our farm products, but we can control our farm operating costs," he says. One way of achieving this is to produce your own fuel.

    • Barren Spring

      Author Claire Hope Cummings dishes the dirt on genetically modified food
      By Bonnie Azab Powell
      01 Aug 2008

      One of the most encouraging things about the sustainable-food movement is how effortlessly it crosses traditional political-party, religious, ethnic, and other lines. The right to good, clean, and fair food, to borrow Slow Food's shorthand, seems to unite people who'd never otherwise find themselves chatting at the same party: Home schoolers and dreadlocked hippies, libertarian DIYers and heartland moms.

      But there are little pockets of polarization where brawls can break out. One of them is the so-called elitism of such food. The biggest hot-button issue by far, though, is that of transgenic crops. The food movement's Christian wing opposes it for religious reasons, the Berkeley brigade for dogmatic ones, the moms out of health fears. Those with science or technology backgrounds, however, tend to see genetically modified organisms as just another tool in the how-we-are-going-to-feed-the-world toolbox -- and tend to get pretty impatient with those who fear them.

      In her new book, Uncertain Peril: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Seeds, Claire Hope Cummings marches through the middle of these often reflexive con and pro positions in search of a more nuanced big-picture view. An environmental lawyer for 20 years, including four spent with the USDA, Cummings now reports regularly on agriculture and the environment. She has also farmed in California and in Vietnam. These experiences inform her book, which chronicles how transgenic seeds came to market; how their corporate backing has affected farmers, biodiversity, and agricultural sovereignty; and what their unfettered spread may mean for humankind.

      It's not a happy picture. Just as Rachel Carson opened Silent Spring with the allegory of a town that woke up to find all the birds gone silent, Cummings said she considered starting Uncertain Peril with a scene in which everyone goes out to check their spring gardens, only to find that nothing has grown. Recently Cummings stopped by my house in Oakland, Calif., (yes, on the Berkeley border) for a chat conducted at her usual breakneck pace.

    • India: Farmers, civil societies seek scrapping of GMO bill

      'The Coalition For GM-Free India', representing farmers' unions and civil society organisations today sought scrapping of the National Biotechnology Regulatory Bill-2008 pleading that 'its provisions are unscientific, undemocratic and amenable to reduce Indians as 'guinea pigs' for the promotion of Genetically Modified (GM) crops and GM foods.'

      The Bill envisages setting up a National Biotechnology Regulatory Authority (NBRA) for ensuring a 'single widow' provision for speedy clearance of GM organisms and products. Such fast clearance mechanism is being put in place to facilitate the approval and propogation in India of GM organisms and products being developed by Monsanto and multinational companies, said a communique issued by the farmer leaders and experts from civil societies network after a-day-long deliberations here.

      Being hurriedly pushed through, the Bill fixes a deadline for public feedback on July 30 to circumvent any worthwhile discussion organised in public domain by scientific community or arranged by the Department of Biotechnology (DGT), which has mooted the Bill, said Dr Devinder Sharma, a noted food and trade policy analyst.

      ''The proposed mechanism is an express clearing house for fast track approvals in favour of the biotech industry, at the expense of health and environment requisites,'' he added.

      The NBRA proposals have been drawn up by the wrong people for the wrong reasons with the wrong perspectives, said Mr Yudhvir Singh, a leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union. And the proposed Authority , he said, ''Denies and violates constitutional rights of the states on their agriculture and citizens rights to remain GM-free.'' This also creates a hurdle to progressive decisions made by the states including Kerala on implementating organic farming policies to protect farmers interests and imposes GM crops everywhere, Mr Singh said.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Firstly, I just want to state that in response to the thread I posted this past weekend regarding paid shills or others voting these threads down to hide them... if there are, you lose. I am not going to be intimidated to stop reporting on this important issue for our very survival. What is being done in India as well as around the world by these biotech companies regarding GM crops is a travesty of Democracy and morality. I will not leave this or any site, especially current.com that gives me the chance to have this information dessiminated to people to hopefully effect change. Vote it down if you wish, but the information and truth of it will remain the same as will my resolve to report this information regardless.
      Monsanto is an evil company that is preying upon developing countries as well as our own to shove these GM seeds down the throats of farmers already living in poverty. They will continue to deny them their Democratic right to liberty and our right to proper disclosure all in the name of profit at the expense of our global environment. It is companies like Monsanto that are raising food prices in collusion with the World Bank and WTO to push these seeds as well as privitizing water supplies, and it is companies like Monsanto that must be fought by informed consumers.
      We have the right to know what is in our food, where our water comes from, and the right to say NO to any attempt to force these fake toxic foods upon us. If there is any way I and others here can effect that change, then I am going to continue to do it.
      Thanks to all who responded in the other thread and also to the staff who explained the situation. Hopefully we will see a resolution. Current has a chance to be a true vanguard network for the people. I am grateful to have the chance to be a part of that.
