Non ci sono più le mezze stagioni….in pianura padana non c’è più la nebbia di una volta…la zanzare tigre hanno invaso l’Europa….i ghiacciai si stanno ritirando…invasione di meduse nel mediterraneo, bagnanti in pericolo!!
Queste affermazioni, che ormai sempre più spesso sentiamo dal nostro vicino d’ombrellone o nelle testate dei TG, fanno parte di una spettacolarizzazione della notizia, oppure contengono una amara verità a cui dobbiamo porre molta attenzione?

Climate science maverick James Lovelock believes catastrophe is inevitable, carbon offsetting is a joke and ethical living a scam. So what would he do?
I found this part of the article an interesting snap shot:
"Humanity is in a period exactly like 1938-9, he explains, when "we all knew something terrible was going to happen, but didn't know what to do about it". But once the second world war was under way, "everyone got excited, they loved the things they could do, it was one long holiday ... so when I think of the impending crisis now, I think in those terms. A sense of purpose - that's what people want."
There are some good points in what he says. ... The part about people not wanting to change. I think he is a bit of a cranky old man and I will keep my hope and faith that we can change but what do you think? Goodbye Sun, Hello Nukes
WASHINGTON -- Pared-down energy legislation cleared the Senate on Thursday by a wide margin after the oil industry and utilities succeeded in stripping out provisions that would have cost them billions of dollars.
The tax measure and the renewable electricity mandate were included in an energy bill that easily passed the House last week. But industry lobbyists focused their attention on Republican members of the Senate and on the White House, which repeatedly threatened to veto the bill if the offending sections were not removed.
Separately, Congress reached a tentative agreement on a major energy package that it plans to enact outside the energy bill, according to a Senate Democratic staff member. The agreement, to be included in a broad government spending bill, would authorize the Energy Department to guarantee loans for various energy projects, making financing far easier.
The agreement would guarantee loans of up to $25 billion for new nuclear plants and $2 billion for a uranium enrichment plant, something those industries had been avidly seeking. It would also provide guarantees of up to $10 billion for renewable energy projects, $10 billion for plants to turn coal into liquid vehicle fuel and $2 billion to turn coal into natural gas.

Cookie cutter reactors running into Hurdles!
WASHINGTON, Dec. 4 - For the first time in three decades, companies are getting ready to build nuclear reactors in the United States. They intend to do so under streamlined procedures meant to avoid the long delays and cost overruns that crippled the industry last time around.
But with early jockeying under way to win government approval for this new generation of plants, ominous signs are emerging that the plans may not go smoothly.
And if the industry succeeds in winning approval for as many new reactors as it wants, 31 and counting, the capacity of nuclear suppliers is likely to be strained. By most estimates, they can fabricate enough parts for only three or four reactors a year, and the United States will be competing with other countries that want to build nuclear plants.

Proposed Ban on Genetically Modified Corn in Europe
European Union environmental officials have determined that two kinds of genetically modified corn could harm butterflies, affect food chains and disturb life in rivers and streams, and they have proposed a ban on the sale of the seeds, which are made by DuPont Pioneer, Dow Agrosciences and Syngenta.
Banning the applications for corn crops also would mark a bold new step for European environmental authorities, who are already aggressively pursuing regulations on emissions from cars and aircraft, setting it at odds with the United States and angering industries.
These products have been grown in the U.S. and other countries for years, said Stephen Norton, a spokesman for the United States trade representative. We are not aware of any other case when a product has been rejected after having been reviewed and determined safe by European food safety authorities, he said.

Activists shut down NSW coal power plant
From the newswire: November 15, 2007 - This morning fifteen Greenpeace activists were arrested during an occupation of the Munmorah coal-fired power station in NSW. 15 crew occupied and took peaceful direct action to shut down the plant as a protest against John Howard and Kevin Rudd's ineffective climate change policies
Greenpeace demands that both major parties commit to deep cuts to Australia's greenhouse gas pollution in the next decade, which means switching from coal fired power to cleaner and smarter energy use.
The activists shut down the coal-feed conveyor belt and painted the message Coal Kills on the roof of the station and deployed a banner saying Climate change starts here. Two other activists hung from the roof displaying climate change messages.
The Munmorah coal-fired power station is the oldest in NSW and one of the most inefficient in the country. Energy campaigner John Hepburn, who was one of the climb team, said that we couldn't just sit back and watch while scientists measure how quickly humans are killing the planet.
