KPFA: Where Liberal Racism Still Exsist!
Police Terrorize Black KPFA Programmer in the station
by Minister of Information JR
On August 20th 2008, between 1-2pm Nadra Foster, a Black female programmer and single mother was beaten to the ground by the Berkeley police, arrested, hog-tied and taken to jail, after the management of KPFA radio station and the Pacifica Foundation, had called the police on her, falsely accusing her of being "banned" from the station.
The incident started when Nadra Foster entered the radio station to work on some radio with the KPFA jazz radio show "Transitions on Traditions".
She was let into the Ujima studio, by Michael Yoshida, KPFA's chief engineer and member of KPFA's management team, who was not aware of "the ban" on her.
Vini Beecham, another member of management, contacted Lois Withers, the KPFA business manager aka accountant, telling her that Nadra was in the building using station resources for her personal benefit. Lois, another member of KPFA's management team, contacted Michael Yoshida to escort her while she kicked Nadra out of the station. When the two arrived at the door of Ujima, Nadra stated that she refused to leave because Lois does not have the power to kick her out.
According to Yoshida, Lois called Dominga Estrada, the Human Resource Director of the Pacifica Foundation, to see how to deal with the situation. Dominga authorized Lois to call the police.
According to what Nadra told me, Lois told the police that she was the general manager of the station, and that Nadra was a fired employee who refused to leave. In reality, Lois is the business manager, and Nadra is a volunteer at the station, and member of the unpaid staff organization. Two male police officers slammed Nadra to the ground, kneeing her in the groin in the process, as well as severely spraining her arm.
A number of KPFA broadcasters saw what had happened, including Anita Johnson of Hard Knock Radio who was in tears pleading with the management and other people at the station to get involved and help Nadra, to no avail. King's Last March Radio Documentary
Culled from interviews with historians, friends, and associates of MLK's alongside archival footage of speeches, American RadioWorks radio documentary is nothing short of fascinating. I was particularly taken with a segment dedicated to King's "Unfulfilled Dreams" sermon, a shattering case of self-reflection on behalf of MLK. Here he referred to life as a "continual story of shattered dreams."
"There is a civil war going on in your life," King declared. "And every time you set out to be good, there's something pulling on you, telling you to be evil."
I was moved by his shift towards addressing poverty on a National scale, which in many ways called for radical changes in America -- both politically and economically.
The hour long program was produced in partnership with the Stanford Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute. Although the program is only an hour in length, the wealth of information being made available does not stop there. There is a range of stuff to dig into, from archived sermons to FBI files on MLK. Fascinating.

Music for morgues
1. WNYC's Radio Lab is the most amazing show on radio today, period.
2. This isn't a full episode, just one of their little preview podcasts. Super-short, like six minutes or something.
3. It's about a guy who was commissioned to write the music that would play in... a morgue.
3a. Tough commission, right?
4. It's amazing. Worth the time. 1. WNYC's Radio Lab is the most amazing show on radio today, period. ... more -
The Turtle Island Project examines centering prayer, fighting structural evil, the...
Centering prayer is a way to prepare your mind - to assist your body - in accomplishing goals - like fighting structural evil such as some corporations who care only about profit and not nature.
The goals of the non-profit Turtle island Project (TIP) include promoting respect for the environment and for Indigenous peoples - like the Celts, Native Americans and other Earth-based cultures.
Rev. Dr. George Cairns of Chesterton, Indiana explains what he learned from the founder of centering prayer - Father Thomas Keating.
A research professor of theology at the Chicago Theological Seminary, Dr. Cairns made his comments at the TIP first regional conference along the shores of Lake Superior in northern Michigan.
Dr. Cairns, who is the TIP co-founder and board president, is returning to Michigan's pristine Upper Peninsula on Fri., Nov. 9, 2007 to hold a free ecumenical retreat for clergy and others interested in interfaith prayer and creating social change.
Everyone is welcome at:
"Quest for Harmony: The Contemplation of Nature in the Christian Tradition promotes interfaith prayer and will examine Christian Celtic traditions" that will be held at Eden on the Bay Lutheran Church in Munising.
