    • Cellulite Busting Sandals- Do They Work?

If a magical potion called "great bod in a bottle” existed I would buy it (along with everyone else on the planet). I have tried every "short cut" method imaginable to obtain a well-rounded, perky derriere with Posh Spice worthy legs. That includes trotting miles in awkward, ugly exercise sandals.

I started with The Original Wood Exercise Sandal from Dr. Scholl's which is a true legend of footwear. The shoe oozes with eternal, retro style and the range of colors to pick from is mouth watering. Plus I bought into their tag line, "feel crazy good", until I took my first step. The feeling of wood slapping the sidewalk when I walked made my spine jangle. The front strap rubbed so aggressively against my toes I had to wear my Keds for the rest of the week. But kudos on their new "eco-green" styles. Next time I will purchase one of their "flexi styles".

If you have a taste for danger you may love Shape Up Shoes who claim their shoes are GREAT if you are too busy for the gym. They have a knock off "Croc" style shoe (fug) and a knock off "Ugg Boot" style (double fug). I went for their better-known sandal, a flip-flop with an oddly shaped platform "rocker" heel. They may lessen the pain from plantar fasciitis only if you are able to walk a single step without rocking off the shoe onto your head. One website claims you should never wear these on a staircase unless you are extremely agile. Enough said.

If you have to invest in a pair of fat blasting shoes, the Fit Flops are they way to go. Based on MBT technology they’re biomechanically engineered to absorb shock and lessen joint strain. Plus they have been spotted on many celebs (usually a good sign that they are comfortable and stable). The downside? Get ready to be outed in public for wearing "cellulite" busting shoes like I was last weekend. Nothing like having a women announce loudly on the Fairway check out line, "Looks she got those cellulite shoes on".

Time to break out the jog bra and hit the treadmill. I am trading my exercise sandals for a sensible pair of New Balance.

    • The upside of being Mischa Barton: a little subcutaneous bottom fat may be good fo...

Could it be that a little of what you fancy really does you good? I can't help noticing the connection between two recent health stories in the news: one about the positive effects of chocolate, the other about the health benefits of being bootylicious.

The first report talks about how a little fat on your booty actually may be good for you. A study undertaken by the Harvard Medical School and published in the Cell Metabolism medical journal (catchy title) found that there are good and bad types of fat. And while abdominal visceral fat, which wraps itself around organs, raised the risk of poor health, subcutaneous fat, which is found under the skin particularly around the buttocks, appeared to boost metabolism and help regulate the body's insulin levels, and may protect against type 2 diabetes. (By the looks of recent paparazzi photos, at least that's one thing Mischa Barton won't have to worry about).

This study follows hot on the heels of research conducted by a team from the University of East Anglia in England which found that eating chocolate can reduce health risks in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes. The scientists involved in this study are now testing the theory that the flavonoid compounds found in chocolate may provide protection against cardiovascular disease (it should be noted that the chocolate researchers used was especially formulated with raised evels of flavonoids).

Of course, as Mischa Barton can tell you, every square of chocolate a girl eats goes straight to her behind, so we're happy to hear there's an upside to your jeans being a little tight around the rear end (though muffin-top is not a good sign, since that's the wrong kind of fat). I guess next time a woman asks that leading question 'does my bum look big in this?' the correct response may be a resounding, heart-healthy, diabetes aware, 'yes.'

    • Get Blissed Out On Caffeine – And Perhaps Prevent Cellulite And Cancer Too

      by Nicole

New research has found that a low to moderate intake of caffeine beverages along with exercise may help prevent sun damage and skin cancer. In a study conducted at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, UVB-exposed mice that ran on a running wheel and drank caffeinated water showed a 400% increase in apoptosis, a mechanism in which UVB-damaged cells commit suicide rather than progressing to possible pre-cancerous stages. Control groups of caffeine drinking-only and exercise-only mice showed an increase in apoptosis of 95% and 120% respectively.

An earlier study at the same university, published in 2002, found that when caffeine was applied topically to the skin of mice it had similar cancer fighting properties. Cancerous tumors were reduced by a dramatic 72%, while benign tumors decreased by 44%. It should be noted the study only related to squamous-cell carcinomas and not the more deadly melanoma.

While more research is needed to see whether these results will translate from mice to humans, caffeine is the new it ingredient in beauty products such as Bliss Spa’s Love Handler. Though the caffeine-rich formula wasn’t tested for any cancer fighting properties, in clinical studies it did have other benefits. It was shown to reduce the appearance of cellulite, and bloating in the abdominal area, in a significant proportion of those tested. So drink up, slap it on, and don’t forget to exercise too.

Love Handler costs $36 for an 8 oz bottle and can be found at your nearest Bliss Spa or online at Blissworld.
