Big Tobacco then, Global Warming Now
Here's an October 1995 internal memo I came across written by someone at tobacco giant Philip Morris outlining all the "public policy grants" and the totals received by US think tanks and associations. Energy costs push consumer prices higher
Meanwhile, the government said that the number of laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits rose by 20,000 last week to 339,000, the highest level in four weeks. Labor Department analysts said the California wildfires boosted the number of jobless claims by about 2,000 and the writers strike, which has shut down production on many television programs, was also having an impact. US gives a hoot, poor nations tremble: Coal usage and another environment panel!
Expectedly, the Americans on the team are the most smug. And why should they not be? A few months ago some US scientists complained in international conferences about the complicity of the US in increasing global warning. Bushs environmental cronies got furious. They drafted guidelines about what may and may not be said by US scientists to their foreign counterparts. So it is understandable that the onus of cleaning up the environment lies with poorer nations while the US carries on polluting the environment. Tuna about to go extinct: Better change diet
But, fisheries researchers predict that if Tuna is consumed at the current rate, there will be no more Tuna left to fish eventually. At least this is what British scientists believe. This report was published in the Journal of Science. With the fishnets getting bigger, vessels getting larger and Tuna fans on the rise, pretty soon we will find the school of Tuna to disappear. So, you might have to change your food habits pretty soon. But, fisheries researchers predict that if Tuna is consumed at the current rate, there will be no more Tuna left to fish eventually. UN blames India as major polluter: Politics with environment
The Times of India reports Kevin Watkins, lead author of HDR-2007, warning the developing world about an increase in their poverty due to more frequent extreme weather events. This is that same old argument that the poverty and inaction of the poor nations just breed more poverty. This kind of logic has a way of shifting focus from the responsibility that rich nations have in making us poor. The fact that developed nations are emitting most greenhouse gases is also covered up. The US is the worlds largest environmental polluter and yet has openly discarded the Kyoto Protocol as unsuitable for its economy. Now this same US is now using the UN to chastise us. The Times of India reports Kevin Watkins, lead author of HDR-2007, warning the developing world about an increase in their poverty due... more

Fossil fuel: To burn or not to burn, that is the question
According to Lovelock even the grimmest predictions of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which bagged the Nobel Peace Prize for this year, are an understatement of the fact. Reality, has says, is far more grave. His theory is that burning of fossil fuel produces a global haze in the Earths atmosphere which actually reduces the temperature of the earth by a couple of degrees by shielding it. A sudden absence of such shield would prove disastrous for the planet.
He says,
Were damned if we continue to burn fuel, and damned if we stop too suddenly. According to Lovelock even the grimmest predictions of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which bagged the Nobel Peace ... more -
Floods cause havoc in Mexico's Gulf Coast
President Vicente Calderon described the calamity as one of the worst catastrophes that ever hit the country. He has even cancelled an overseas tour to look after the grim situation. Despite being oil-rich the Gulf-coast region is one of the poorest in the country and the homeless people are in immediate need of fresh drinking water, food and shelter. The historic capital city of Villa Hermosa is inhabited by half a million residents and is overflowed by floods. Although Mexico has not asked for international help, yet the grim situation might demand an international aid flow. River Thames: 'an open sewer'
River Thames remained cynosure of every eye for a long time, but the heritage of the river seems to be diminishing. After heavy and incessant rains and flooding, the once beautiful river has given way to a river full of sewage effluents that is increasingly becoming a health hazard for the marine life as well as the human population. Untreated sewage flowing into the river has choked the clean, beautiful river and resulted in toxic algal bloom. Passing nearby the river is nothing less than toxic that results in nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or abdominal pain. River Thames remained cynosure of every eye for a long time, but the heritage of the river seems to be diminishing. After heavy and in... more

Recession hinges on coping with credit crisis
"So, either the U.S. economy will overcome the debt crisis and keep growing, or it won't. It's that simple and that important, with millions of indebted homeowners struggling to stay above water, the stock market seesawing uncertainly, and just a year to go before the next President is elected."
