This is a very interesting article on why Al Gore is not running for president and, I for one, think we owe him a lot of thanks for this step. I never looked at it this way before. • Keep the Status Quo, Mr. Gore?

If you decide to not run for President, you will be turning your back on the American people. How can you encourage us to rise up, to participate, and have our voices be heard only to blow us off after we have joined the dialogue? We have enthusiastically called for your candidacy with a hope that I’ve never before seen in my lifetime. Yet for those of us who have poured our hearts and souls out to you, your only answer is… “well, sorry.” What’s up with that? Right now you look like just another politician ignoring the voices of America in favor of your own “agenda.” If you do not run, your influence and stature will decline even on global warming, especially with the American people. If you do not run, you will go down in history as just another typical politician who failed to lead at this critical juncture in time. You truly have the opportunity to change this country and this world, Mr. Gore, but if you don’t run you will forfeit America to Hillary or Rudy or Mitt. Do you really believe that any of them will truly advance the cause of global warming? Reduce our dependence on oil? Get us out of Iraq? Actually secure health care for all Americans? Maybe we were wrong - maybe you don’t have what it takes to really fight for this nation. Maybe you really do want to just keep the status quo. If you decide to not run for President, you will be turning your back on the American people. How can you encourage us to rise up, to... more

    • Blackwater anti-drug task force in US?

Blackwater has bids in for up to $15,000,000,000 in anti-drug contracts. Blackwater. Does this trend frighten any one else as much as it does me? Especially when combined with certain legislation signed by Bush that makes it easier for him to declare martial law and deploy troops in our own country for use against civilians. • Draft Al Gore in CA: Calling all Gore Supporters to Serve NOW!

      This is interesting because:
      1) Imagine the draft Gore effort succeeds and his name is ont he CA primary ballot.
      2) imagine he does not make a specific request to have his name removed from the ballot.
      3) He wins or does very well in CA, along with NY, NJ
      4) He enters the race, wins the nomination and the Presidency.

    • Gore's nightmare: Europe turns to U.S. coal

The linked should be a testimony that Al Gore should run for office. He is a figure head for environmental issues but his name could carry more weight if he were president. Current President, Bush, can talk Europe into joining in his war campaign but Gore cannot persuade them not to use coal for fuel....even after they praised him and his studies on the environmental issues.

I hope he does take a stand for the people of America and serve his term in office so he can have absolute recognition.

    • My Final Plea to the Honorable Albert Gore, Jr.

I have been thinking a lot lately about all of our efforts to try to convince you to run for President in 2008. In you book, "The Assualt On Reason", you write about people needed to come together, to make our voices heard, to take back our government so that it is, once again, a government for the people, by the people. In working with draftgore.com, netrootsforgore, gore2008, Americaforgore and all the other websites that are working to get you to run, aren't we doing exactly what you advised us to do in your book?
We are coming together and using our voices - with newspaper ads, tv ads, calls & letters to senators, letters, phone calls and emails to you, working on various campaigns (like the pennies we sent), showing up where you are speaking to hand out "Gore 2008" buttons, gathering signatures - letting our opinions be known on hundreds of websites, here at current.com, on youtube and everywhere we can think of. We all have one common theme - to ask, beg, plea and, sometimes, even demand that you run.
In Time magazine May 16th, 2007, you stated that, "I am under no illusions that any position has as much ability to influence change as the presidency does. If the President made climate change the organizing principle, the filter through which everything else had to flow, then that could really make a huge difference." If you really believe that, why aren't you running? You have trained many others to carry on the climate crisis fight. Shouldn't you help all you can by being our president and helping us lead the world in this fight?
On July 7th you stood before millions of us, asking us to "answer the call" for our planet and we responded by signing the pledge and changing the way we live our lives, working to become carbon neutral - answering your call.
Now, Mr. Gore, isn't it time YOU answered our call?
I have been thinking a lot lately about all of our efforts to try to convince you to run for President in 2008. In you book, "The Assu... more

    • Why your silence is so difficult Mr. Gore.

I have spent so much time these past few weeks reading the Gore petition and all the posts about him here at Current. I have wondered why many of us do not simply choose another candidate and move on. What strikes me is that so many of us feel cheated by the 2000 election and by the resulting chaos that has followed. Many other candidates offer a change that may well lead us back to a better place. Still it is difficult to let go of the idea of a possible Gore run.

Perhaps this is because we feel a need for a complete turnaround...back to the time before the events of the last seven years so radically changed the world's view of America and in fact our own view of ourselves. When something is "stolen" you want it back. You don't want something close to it. You want the original.

We have all grown since then, a bit harder and more cynical. What I think we want is to shed that thicker skin, to feel refreshed, renewed, reinvigorated. We want to regain that former part of ourselves and our nation as we knew it. That is why Al Gore is so important to us. And those who follow his career know that he has grown as well and still seems to embody the hope that many of us have lost. Your silence is difficult Mr. Gore and while you owe us nothing, I ask you to think of those who supported you then and believe in you still. It is difficult to let go and though you may be a recovering politician, we cannot shed our citizenship. I wish that you would join this discourse if only to give us some advise. Politicians are what we have. Our votes and our voices hold our place in this democracy. We look to you for the strength and courage to move forward.

    • Wherefore Al Gore

Follows the progress of a campaign in Western Massachusetts to place Al Gore on the ballot for the Democratic Party primary. This is an interesting effort, thoroughly grass-roots, being undertaken by some 230 similar groups around the country. With Gore having just won the Nobel Peace Prize, an Oscar earlier in the year, huge international recognition and unencumbered by the negatives attached to the front-runners in the Democratic field, Gore supporters think he represents the best chance for the Democratic Party to capture the White House in 2008. • Global Warming and the 2008 Campaign

Global warming should be the top priority issue of the 2008 Presidential campaign, so that there will be a mandate for major policy changes in the next Congress. The candidates announced so far are not taking global warming seriously. I have concluded that Al Gore must run for President, with global warming solutions as his top priority, so that he can lead the USA to make the necessary changes. • CBS News Poll - Gore emerges as a serious contender!

Hillary is *not* inevitable if Al steps into the race. A new CBS Poll shows that there is no significant difference in support for Gore versus Clinton among Democratic primary voters (even though CBS has given their poll results a different spin).

Keep in mind that in the CBS Poll, 456 interviews were conducted with Democratic primary voters. The margin of error for this subgroup is plus or minus 5 percentage points.

"When former Vice President Al Gore, who has not entered the race, is added as a choice for the Democratic nomination, he emerges as a serious contender. Gore garners support of 32 percent of Democratic primary voters, while Clinton gets 37 percent, Obama 16 percent, and Edwards 7 percent."!

Given that the MOE is 5% and Gore and Clinton differ by only 5%, then this poll does not demonstrate a statistically significant difference in support for Gore v. Clinton.

IMO, if he declared his candidacy, his numbers would rise drawing voters from Clinton, Obama, and Edwards. Why? If he declares now or early next year, then his views on all issues - climate crisis, war, health care, etcetera - would get exposure and he would attract more voters. Right now most people aren't aware of his views. Also, if he declared his candidacy and announced up front that Obama or Edwards would be his VP - his ratings would rise dramatically.

Meanwhile over at DraftGore.com the number of signatures is nearing 220,000
      http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/algore2008/signatori...

And over at Democracy for America Gore has captured over 27% of the votes as a write-in candidate - go vote for Al !
