    • Man jailed for attacks on gay men he met in chatrooms

A life sentence has been handed to a Swedish man for his brutal attacks against gay men.

Swedish website The Local reported that the 35-year-old was convicted of killing a man in his own home on December 28th 2007 and of the robbery and attempted murder of a 44-year-old man the day before. He was also convicted of robbing two men on the ninth and 15th of December, having finished a sentence in January 2007 for similar crimes.

The man met his victims through internet chat sites and gave the impression that he wanted to have sex with them, meeting them in their apartments in Stockholm.

His last victim died from knife wounds and a knife was used in the attempted murder. The victim received a number of threats and stab wounds, including one on the sole of his foot as he lay naked in bed with his hand tied behind his back. He also had his wallet, holding 900 kronor (around £75), stolen.

"All the victims were, or are, homosexual," said public prosecutor Fredrik Ingblad at the man's indictment hearing. "He has taken advantage of their sexual preferences and violated them."

Have you ever met someone in person that you'd 'met' on the internet? Did they tie you up, stab you in the foot and steal your wallet? (I hope not) Can it ever be safe to meet up with someone you 'met' online? Are minority groups particularly vulnerable in cases like this?

    • Suspect held says Holloway is dead in chat room!

      Now this is getting interesting...

One of three top suspects in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway wrote during an Internet chat session that the teenager was dead, Aruba's chief prosecutor said Thursday.

Prosecutor Hans Mos refused to identify the person who wrote the message but said its discovery had contributed to the decision to re-arrest Joran van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe last month.

    • "Flirting Robot" On Networking Sites Steals Your Info

A new hacker tool called CyberLover can mimic online flirtation and then extract personal information from its unsuspecting conversation partners. The software, currently making the rounds in Russian chat forums, is good enough that victims have a tough time distinguishing the "bot" from a real potential suitor.

The software works quickly, establishing up to 10 relationships in 30 minutes, and compiles a report on every person it meets complete with name, contact information, and photos. Among CyberLover's creepy features is its ability to offer a range of different profiles from "romantic lover" to "sexual predator." It can also lead victims to a "personal" Web site, which could be used to deliver malware.

CyberLover is among a growing collection social-engineering attacks.

    • German school closed after online massacre threat

A German secondary school was closed yesterday after Finnish police investigating last month's school shooting came across a massacre plan in a chatroom. This is another disturbing development in the latest of a string of violent plots believed to have been hatched by students in internet chat rooms.

"German police and education authorities have pointed to a worrying growth in copycat incidents as well as a sharp rise in the number of pupils sharing information on the internet, and goading and inspiring each other into carrying out attacks."

I'm not sure if there's a direct link between the rise in copycat incidents and the use of online chatrooms. My feeling is that if kids are going to make plans like this, they'll do it with whatever communication media is available to them. Do you think that the internet is making it easier for students to hatch these plans?

    • Jihadist Chatter

Rossmiller developed her remarkable talent for chatting up terrorists after September 11, when she started going into online forums and cajoling valuable information from other visitors. She has passed along numerous case files to federal authorities. Her information has led US forces abroad to locate Taliban cells in Afghanistan, discover a renegade stinger-missile merchant in Pakistan, and help another foreign government identify a ring of potential suicide bombers....
