On call twenty-four hours a day, smokejumpers have 10 minutes to suit up, grab their gears and load the plane. Within minutes of a fire alert, they fly info mountainous, rocky terrain and dense forest, then parachute from as high as 3,OOO feet into the heart of the inferno to quickly reach the flames and battle the fire before it burns out of control.
