    • Poland have 'resolved' dispute with Fifa

UEFA, the governing body of European football, said they were likely to withdraw Poland's right to host Euro 2012 if the country didn't reinstate their football association this morning.

A Polish arbitration tribubal suspended the PZPN (the equivalent to the Football Association) and named an administrator last week after the country's Sports Minister filed a motion saying it had broken the law a number of times.

"They (Polish government) have to realise they are playing with Euro 2012. How can we trust a government to host the tournament .... if they fail to meet the deadline then it is likely we cannot go on," a UEFA spokesman said.

FIFA, whose rules forbid government interference, said Warsaw must reinstate the FA or risk being suspended from this month's two World Cup qualifying matches.

Update: According to FA bigwig Sepp Blatter the Polish Football Association has settled a dispute with its government that threatened its right to co-host Euro 2012.

    • Sven-Göran Eriksson Wanted An International England

Sven-Göran Eriksson had plans to integrate as many as four foreign-born players in his England side according to David Davies, the former executive director of the Football Association.

Davies, in a Daily Mail serialisation of his book FA Confidential, claimed that Eriksson reacted to the 2004 exit from the European Championships by suggesting a list of Premier League imports who were uncapped by their countries and could legally be brought into the England side due to FIFA's residence rules.

The four names suggested by the Swede were Chelsea's Italian goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, Brazilian midfielder Edu, then of Arsenal, and French pair Steed Malbranque and Louis Saha, who played for Fulham and Manchester United respectively.

None of the four ever went on to play for England, with Edu and Saha subsequently capped by their own nations.

    • FIFA fine Croatia over racist chants

Fifa has fined the Croatian Football Federation £15,000 for the racist behaviour of their fans during the match with England on 10 September.

Monkey chants were heard from a section of the Maksimir Stadium when England striker Emile Heskey was booked.

The FA made an official complaint after the game and Heskey later called the fans "ignorant people" and claimed he ignored them.

"You have to let the people above deal with that and I will carry on playing my game," added the England forward.

The FIFA statement said: "Racism has no place in football.

"Fifa is determined to continue broadcasting this message around the globe and deploying all of the means at its disposal to eliminate this form of discrimination."

£15k is that it? Hardly much of a deterrent is it?

    • FIFA take action against UAE

FIFA has launched disciplinary action against the UAE Football Association after crowd trouble during the national team’s defeat by North Korea.

Officials from the national team will be asked to explain the circumstances that saw Emirati fans pelting match officials and North Korean players with water bottles and juice cartons.

Trouble erupted soon after An Choi-Hyo, a North Korean attacker, scored his side’s second goal in their surprise 2-1 win. A barrage of rubbish rained down on the pitch from two home stands at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium.

One assistant referee and the North Korean keeper had to dodge missiles, and a North Korean player receiving treatment for an injury was struck on the chest.
Although fans calmed down after appeals from players and the intervention of the police, more bottles were thrown at the end of the game.

Football’s governing bodies must first receive the referee’s match report before they can act. A FIFA spokeswoman said yesterday: “Having received the official reports, FIFA has opened a disciplinary procedure regarding that match.

“As the procedure is currently ongoing, we are not in a position to provide any further details until a decision has been reached and communicated to the parties.”
The spokeswoman said the organisation took any act of violence towards match officials “very seriously”, adding:
“Fair play is one of the basic principles of FIFA.”

Disciplinary measures are normally processed within three weeks.

Teams whose fans throw objects on to the pitch are usually fined. The UAE may face a higher fine as match officials were targeted.

Repeat offenders can be ordered to play matches behind closed doors or in a neutral venue and face increasingly large fines.

The UAE play Saudi Arabia in the same stadium tomorrow night knowing defeat would all but end their hopes of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Abu Dhabi Police have announced that the sale of water and juice will be banned at the stadium.

Drinks are already banned for league matches and this will be extended to cover all international matches in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

    • U.S. to challenge England in bid to host the 2018 World Cup

For the past year or so, I've been following the news surrounding England's attempt to win the bid to host the World Cup in 2018. In all of that time I couldn't believe that US Soccer was just going to sit around and let Europe host another World Cup before it could come back to North America.

At last, the word is that the USSF is going to bid against any European bid to host the tournament in 2018.

England's stance is that following the Summer Olympics of 2012 the infrastructure will be in place to host the World Cup.

That USSF's answer: the infrastructure to host the World Cup already in place.

USSF's Sunil Gulati: "There is no country in the world in a better position in terms of stadium facilities and size than us."

"We have got 50 stadia of 70,000 capacities capable of hosting the World Cup. We could have hosted the competition in 1998 in stadiums that didn't even exist in 1994, and the same goes for 2002 and not use any stadiums that existed in 1998.

"We are determined to finish what we started in 1994. We are the most diversified nation in the world. If Nigeria and Ghana played each other, it would sell out. If Australia played Costa Rica, it would sell out. When we staged a third-place play off between Sweden and Bulgaria in 1994 there were 85,000 people there. My point is that it is not a question of fearing any country. We think we'd have a great bid, great structure and a great landscape."

    • Sepp Blatters the Premier League plans

The plans were never really gaining any popular support and it now looks like Sepp Blatter has put the final nail in the coffin for plans to play Premier League games abroad.

"This will never happen, at least as long as I am president of FIFA. It is an astonishing concept that is not acceptable to me and will not be acceptable to the FIFA executive or Congress. I thought it was a joke at the end of the carnival season but it seems not.”

Richard Scudmore, the head of the Premier League, must be somewhat miffed at how much Sepp has Blattered all over his plans for a sunnier competition. To add insult to injury Sepp Blatter said that this plan amounted to abuse, an already rich Premier League trying to get richer and said this greed would have a negative effect on Englands 2018 bid to host the World Cup.

“When it comes to a decision of the executive committee concerning this matter of the 39th round, and I am sure they will be against it, then it will not have a positive impact on the bid from England”

Just to make it clear Mr Scudmore, it looks like you've now got no support at all, and now you've damaged our 2018 World Cup bid. Nice one.

    • Kaka is the best

Kaka, the Brazillian star who plays in Italy for AC MIlan has won the Balon D'Or for 2007 and can now officially call himself the greatest player in the world. It has been a mixed 12 months for the 25 year old. 2006 saw a disappointing turn out for Brazil in the World Cup and his club AC Milan have struggled domestically in the last few seasons. However few could doubt his class as he carried Milan to Champions League glory in May this year.

Despite Milan's inconsistencies, Kaka's individual performances continue to astound. He regularly scores spectacular goals and his presence on the pitch leaves mere mortals entranced.

I personally would have gone for Barcelona's Lionel Messi. The way he has performed this season so far I can't imagine it going to anyone else. It does seem this award normally goes to whoever has won the World Cup or the Champions League rather than a player who has consistently performed over 12 months. It is ridiculous that Thierry Henry or Francesco Totti have not been given this honour in previous seasons. Any Ronaldo fans out there?

    • FIFA ends rotation system

The system was there to ensure that the World Cup would be hosted in different continents on a rotation system. What does it mean now that it has been abandoned? England 2018!!! It's coming home, it's coming home, ... football's coming home! Well, not necessarily, but it does mean that England can enter the bidding race to host the World Cup in 2018.

My favorite bit in this article is this bit

”With the Olympics in 2012, possibly the Commonwealth Games in 2014, the Rugby World Cup in 2015 and the cricket World Cup in 2019, a football World Cup in 2018 would crown what I believe can be the greatest decade ever for British sport.”

We’ve got to be able to win something with all those competitions being held on home turf.
