    • Obama vows to improve quality of life for Native Americans

Barak Obama has pledged a new era for Native Americans when he is elected president beginning with the honoring of long-ignored treaty obligations and the revamping of health care and education on reservations across the U.S. He said treaty commitments had the force of law and had to be the basis of decisions in Indian Country. Keep in mind that no president — either Democrat or Republican — has hitherto honored the treaties.

Obama further said that he would make sure Indian children receive a "world class education" and that his administration would end a century of "mismanagement of Indian trust." He pledged to fulfill the needs of the Native American peoples. Obama was the first presidential candidate in history to visit an Indian reservation.

    • Ireland rejects the Lisbon reform treaty of Europe

      Ireland, sometimes I love you.
Lisbon has been defeated, it would have been ratified by 26/27 EU countries but needs all 27 to accept it to pass.
Ireland is the ONLY country having a referendum on the issue.
Our constitution says it's a must.

The no side, demonised by the yes, accused of being anti EU, racist,i solationist, Ultra nationalist and Right wing hard line catholic seems to have prevailed.

And while they might all have been on the no side it seems that, the Yes side forgot who the biggest proportion of Noes really are: ordinary working and middle class people who don't like signing up to a treaty that even government officials admit to not having read.

    • The Associated Press: 111 nations, but not US, adopt cluster bomb treaty

Chief negotiators of a landmark treaty banning cluster bombs predicted Friday that the United States will never again use the weapons, a critical component of American air and artillery power.

The treaty formally adopted Friday by 111 nations, including many of America's major NATO partners, would outlaw all current designs of cluster munitions and require destruction of stockpiles within eight years. It also opens the possibility that European allies could order U.S. bases located in their countries to remove cluster bombs from their stocks.

The United States and other leading cluster bomb makers — Russia, China, Israel, India and Pakistan — boycotted the talks, emphasized they would not sign the treaty and publicly shrugged off its value. All defended the overriding military value of cluster bombs, which carpet a battlefield with dozens to hundreds of explosions.

But treaty backers — who long have sought a ban because cluster bombs leave behind "duds" that later maim or kill civilians — insisted they had made it too politically painful for any country to use the weapons again.

"The country that thinks of using cluster munitions next week should think twice, because it would look very bad," said Espen Barth Eide, Deputy Defense Minister of Norway, which began the negotiations last year and will host a treaty-signing ceremony Dec. 3.

    • A Civil War Ends?

In northern Uganda, a rebel group called the Lord's Resistance Army has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s in what has become Africa's longest civil war. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people have died in the war and thousands of children have been abducted. But in recent years, thousands of rebels have come out of bush to take advantage of amnesty offer by the Ugandan government. Now thousands of former rebels, including some of its top leaders, live side by side with victims. • Lakota Nation Repudiates Treaty, Secedes From US

This is like a dream for the state's rights folks, isn't it? Obviously, states can't do this, because they were not created by treaty, but self-determination is the bedrock upon which state's rights are built, right?
      Quote:
The move to form an independent nation will focus on property rights in a five-state area where the treaties in question were drawn up. The states include South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana ? areas that the group say have been illegally homesteaded for years despite knowledge of Lakota as the historic owners.

If the U.S. government does not immediately enter into diplomatic negotiations, the group said in a news release, liens will be filed on real-estate transactions across the region -- an action it says could cloud title issues over thousands of square miles of land and property.

The Federalist in me thinks that the Indian Wars just started up again.

    • The Manoomin Project: Michigan teens, American Indians restore wild rice

(Marquette, Michigan) - The Manoomin Project is restoring wild rice to northern Michigan after the grain disappeared a century ago due to logging, pesticides and other manmade impact.

Over 100 at-risk teens are learning to respect themselves, nature and American Indian culture by planting more than one ton of wild rice during the past four summers. The teens also learn about social issues like racism against Native Americans.

The 2007 planting was delayed six weeks until November due to low water levels.

The teens first participate as part of juvenile court probation for minor crimes but many enjoy the project so much they return the next year.

Guides from several tribes volunteer to teach the teens how to take water samples, and about the historical and cultural importance of the grain that is used in many American Indian ceremonies.

The project was founded by the non-profit Cedar Tree Institute and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC).

Guides belong to KBIC, the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa (Ottawa) Indians based in downstate Harbor Springs, Michigan, and the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa located close to International Falls, Minnesota near the Canadian border.

Rev. Jon Magnuson, project founder, praised the tribes for working with the teens, most of whom are white. The project includes classroom time, stress reduction exercises, and learning about social issues like prejudice against Native Americans.

In July 2007, the teens heard from Ojibwa elder and Vietnam War veteran Glen Bressette who explained he was the target of racism while their age and overcame problems familiar to the youth like substance abuse and scrapes with the law that included being shot at by police while stealing gas.

The teens witnessed Bressette have a dramatic flashback when a helicopter flew low and close to their meeting site along Lake Superior. He had been a gunner aboard a chopper in Vietnam.

American Indian guide Don Chosa said the teens carry hundreds of pounds of wild rice seeds for miles through thick forests and over mountains to get to seven secret remote planting sites along rivers and lakes. During the hikes, the teens have come upon bears, eagles and other wildlife.

An annual "Blessing of the Wild Rice" ceremony is held that includes American Indian food, songs, language, and prayers. If they want, the teens have the opportunity to learn about God and the environment but they are not forced to be be involved in any religious activities.

Manoomin Project volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson looks at the 2007 planting and four years of success.
