Cheerleaders are risking serious injury and death to support their teams
New research shows that cheerleaders, who once dazzled with their smiles and sequins, are at greater risk of serious injury than American football players.
Instead of just cheering on their team, cheerleaders are now encouraged to compete in high-stress competitions, where dangerous throws and tumbles reminiscent of gymnastics are the norm.
Because the pastime is not regulated like a sport, accidents are common and cheerleaders are swapping their pom poms for crutches, knee braces and ice packs.
Campaign groups, horrified by a growing incidence of "catastrophic injuries" which have left cheerleaders with disabilities, paralysis and even dead, are fighting to clean up the "sport", where many school coaches do not have the necessary safety training.
Figures collated by the National Centre for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research found that between 1982 and last year, 67 young women suffered devastating injuries or death, which accounts for two out of three of all serious sporting injuries among young women.
The incidence of injuries causing paralysis or disability was 2.68 per 100,000 cheerleaders, which eclipses the figure for American football, where there are more fatalities but a lower ratio of injuries to participants.
The number of cheerleaders treated at hospital accident and emergency wards increased from under 5,000 a year in 1980 to nearly 30,000 a year today. New research shows that cheerleaders, who once dazzled with their smiles and sequins, are at greater risk of serious injury than Ameri... more -

Cheerleaders putting the "ho" back in Idaho: Outfits deemed too skimpy
The Idaho Vandals cheerleaders from the University of Idaho were recently forced to dip into their “spirit squad fund” and buy new outfits — because their previous game time attire (crop tops and tiny skirts) was deemed too revealing.
From the Herald Tribune: “A number of fans were concerned that the uniforms were inappropriate,” said Bruce Pitman, dean of students. “To be fair, there were a number of fans who liked them.”
Unless those Idaho cheerleaders were forced into dressing provocatively, there was no reason to go after them. These girls are college students — adults. If Ms. Uptight Mom or Mr. Nervous Dad didn’t want their younger children being exposed to bare midrifts…they should probably consider shutting off the television and computer forever. They should also keep their children away from beaches. And pools. Better yet, why not just blindfold them until they’re ready to get married?
That’ll solve it. The Idaho Vandals cheerleaders from the University of Idaho were recently forced to dip into their “spirit squad fund” and buy new out... more -

Cheerleaders told uniforms are too short for class
" Parents of cheerleaders at an Ohio high school are frustrated with administrators for uniforms they say come up short in the classroom.
Monroe Schools Superintendent Elizabeth Lolli told WLWT TV that cheerleaders were instructed to wear long shorts and T-shirts underneath their uniforms at a pep rally Friday.
"The skirts that the cheerleaders wear are very short, and they're very tight and they're slit so they can do the gymnastics that are required of a cheerleader," Lolli told WLWT.com.
Lolli said the skirts are allowed only during assemblies and games.
"You want to have students wear appropriate clothing during the educational period of the day, and then after school, wear the appropriate clothing for the event," she said.
The uniforms have not been an issue in previous years because the district's dress code was not specific on required length for shorts and skirts. The policy was clarified earlier this year, requiring that the bottom of shorts and skirts be no more than 3 inches above the knee.
Parent Becky Daniel said the school's dress code should not apply to cheerleader's uniforms.
"My daughter is a senior, this is her last year," Daniel told the station. "We paid for uniforms and they should be able to wear them on game day."

26 Cheerleaders get stuck in elevator and have to be resuced
How many cheerleaders can cram into an elevator? Apparently not 26. A group of teenage girls attending a cheerleading camp on the University of Texas got stuck and had to be rescued after trying to squeeze into an elevator at a residence hall Tuesday night.
One girl fainted and was treated at a hospital and released. Two others were treated at the scene.
The elevator doors refused to open after the pack of 14- to 17-year-olds descended from the fourth to the first floor, police said. Responding to a few panicked cell phone calls from the group, police and firefighters summoned an elevator repairman, who spent about 25 minutes extricating them.
Campus officials weren't amused.
"It's dangerous, actually," said a school police spokeswoman, Rhonda Weldon. "They're lucky that that's all that happened." How many cheerleaders can cram into an elevator? Apparently not 26. A group of teenage girls attending a cheerleading camp on the Univ... more -

Cheerleaders - just not cricket?
Many foreign cheerleaders have been imported for this month's inauguration of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a shortened form of cricket that transforms the game into a more glitzy, US-style sponsored sports event.
But outraged politicians say it is an affront to Indian culture, while some cheerleaders complain that lewd comments and insults from spectators are making their job a misery.
