    • Is Tavis Smiley A Hater?

LOS ANGELES - Tavis Smiley is all wound up. His voice is rough from too much vocalizing, but the host of public television's Tavis Smiley talk show and public radio's The Tavis Smiley Show is on an oratorical roll about race, politics, and his fellow black, Barack Obama, the expected Democratic presidential nominee.

"There is no such thing in America as race transcendence, and Obama's going to find that out real soon," says Smiley, leaning into his words. As he sermonizes, he sheds suit jacket, tie and belt in succession, getting comfy in his spacious suite at KCET in Los Angeles after taping two installments of Tavis Smiley (12:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, 1:30 a.m. Saturday on UNC-TV).

Despite the peaceful vibe inside his sanctuary, with its African masks and scented candle, Smiley frowns. "There's no such thing as ‘post-racial' in America, because if you push the envelope too far, you're going to hear about it." Smiley should know. For months he has been the object of an Internet firestorm for his perceived negative comments about Obama on commercial radio's syndicated The Tom Joyner Morning Show.

Smiley found himself between race and a hard place when he criticized Obama on-air for choosing not to appear on Smiley's annual State of the Black Union cablecast on C-SPAN in February.

Smiley's remarks sparked a blaze of invective by black bloggers, who questioned Smiley's loyalty, motives and ego.

    • The (Mis)Education of John Edwards

John Edward’s consecutive primary losses ended his five year bid for president. His “two America” campaign theme and populist approach did not resonate well with democratic voters. After seven years of gross mismanagement and disastrous neo-con policies, democrats hunger for change, competency and unity. While Obama represents freshness and change, Clinton’s experience and policy prowess reassures weary working class voters. Democrats seemed to move beyond the "have and have-not" argument in this election. Pressing challenges such as the Iraq war, home foreclosures, rising healthcare and educational costs, and economic downturn unite people. When facing a real or potential crisis, there is only one America.

Edwards’ campaign should have focused on unity – the need to bridge the gaps between the rich and poor, the old and young, the educated and less educated, women and men, straights and gays, and blacks, whites and browns. Democrats probably would have responded positively given the divisive racial and gender rhetoric in the early primaries. Edwards’ two America message was equally divisive and thus, failed to be a credible alternative to Obama and Clinton. Edwards, 53, is a young and promising leader. Perhaps he should return to his roots in NC, run for governor, and return in 2012 or 2016.

    • Honesty is a virtue... Unless you smoke herb.

      •Clinton didn't inhale
•Dubya ignored accusations of drug use
•Obama "got into drinking, experimenting with drugs."

How will Obama's admitted use of drugs in High School play in the primaries?
Is honesty not a good policy when informing kids about drugs? I have been told my whole life by cops and administrators that, "they don't call it 'dope' for no reason." I know I will tell my kids the truth from my life. It's much easier being happy with being lazy when you smoke herb.

I may not be voting for Obama, but I think that a frank and honest talk about drugs in this country would not be a bad thing.

    • Draft Al Gore in CA: Calling all Gore Supporters to Serve NOW!

      This is interesting because:
      1) Imagine the draft Gore effort succeeds and his name is ont he CA primary ballot.
      2) imagine he does not make a specific request to have his name removed from the ballot.
      3) He wins or does very well in CA, along with NY, NJ
      4) He enters the race, wins the nomination and the Presidency.

    • South Carolina Dems keep Colbert off SC Ballot!

why they be hating on him yo?

"South Carolina Democrats squashed Stephen Colbert's fanciful White House bid on Thursday.

Colbert, who poses as a conservative talk-show host on the Comedy Central cable network, filed to get on the ballot as a Democratic candidate in his native South Carolina. His campaign paid a $2,500 filing fee just before the noon deadline, said state Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler.

However, after about 40 minutes of discussion by top party officials, the executive council voted 13-3 to keep the host of "The Colbert Report" off the ballot."

    • Colbert to run as a Dem; says GOP too costly

Stephen Colbert's presidential campaign is apparently no joke.

The host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" will file papers late Wednesday or early Thursday to put his name on South Carolina's Democratic primary ballot

The South Carolina native will not file papers as a Republican because the $35,000 required to get on the GOP ballot is apparently too high a threshold.

"They priced us out of range," a source told CNN.

The South Carolina Democratic Party only demands that a candidate pay $2,500 or garner 3,000 signatures to get on the ballot.

    • Al Gore vs. H. Clinton. This poll puts Gore in second place.

This poll puts Gore in second place, only points behind Clinton, and Gore is not even running "yet". <-- we all have hopes, dreams, and admirations; if Al Gore runs, many of mine would be satisfied...therefore, I say "yet". (the CBS poll link is at the top left of the page)

      >>>>> I imagine that Al Gore could go to the top of the polls because Clinton does not stand solid on issues, is a mirror of John Kerry at times by changing sides on what she says during the debates, and is a lobbyist. At least she does admit to being a lobbyist though she does not admit to any illegal lobbying. For those reasons she is not trusful. It seems apparent that she hides her true intentions by not fully answering or changing the direction of questions. She is only going to the votes and not for the issues, in fear of any damage that may be done to her campaign so no person in their right mind should support any candidate like that.

      >>>>>Furthermore, I totally support Gore because he stands by his beliefs and expresses them openly. People may say he's crazy or weird or anything else, but he has a passion and that is what everyone needs. There was a time when candidates actually stood for something which was more than themselves. I am saying that Gore is on a mission for the world, not just his nation or his benefits. When he made the documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth", he did not say..."I am doing this so I can win the Nobel Peace Prize." He did it because he saw an opportunity to give humanity information about the place it lives so that we can know what is happening and what our potential affects are.

      >>>>>>For the skeptics:
For those of you who may not believe the statistics on "An Inconvenient Truth", think past the validity of what was presented to you and the rest of the world. Even if we are only going through an Earth/Time cycle, the fact is that we, humanity, needs to clean up our environment. We need to be responsible for things and not just cast pollution to the side until it becomes an issue. Why not start now and make our health and the potential health of our children much better. The news reports today speak of how China's pollution is causing many health problems. The number of problems have risen 40% since 2001 (when it's industry really began to take off). America already has so many "common" health problems which are rarely seen in many/most other countries. We are undoubtedly affecting our environment, not to say that is the only culprit. At the same time the changes could also be a cycle, but the cycle does not need our help. All we are doing is compounding its affects. We need to begin finding solutions to igsisting environmental problems now. Because change happens over a long period of time, we should act now so the changes will take affect before they become worse. For these reasons I support Al Gore and fully hope he will run in the 2008 elections and ultimately become president.
