Plasterer who claimed magic powers arrested in UAE
An Egyptian man has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates for claiming to be a witch doctor and having magical powers.
The 38-year-old plasterer for a construction company in Abu Dhabi said that he had powers to solve relationship problems, undo curses and ward off the effects of the “evil eye”.
The man, who because of UAE privacy law can only be identified as AA, was alleged to have cheated customers out of as much as US$1,900.
He was caught by Al Ain CID who posed as a punter after receiving a tip-off.
An undercover female officer called the suspect, claiming to have problems in her relationship and asked for his help to restore the intimacy in her marriage.
AA told the woman he could help her relationship by casting a spell for $800.
He asked the officer to bring him some special ingredients so he could make the spell.
According to reports, a police raid on his home revealed books that invoked the presence of jinn (evil spirits), amulets and pieces of deer skin, as well as underwear from his female clients – a necessary part in completing any spell.
Upon arrest, the man confessed to the charges and admitted to defrauding six women in the last five months.
He met his clients in shopping malls and other public areas after they came to him on the recommendation of friends.
AA said he regretted what he had done and claimed that the "the devil was able to manipulate him".
Lt Col Mohammed al Rashdi, the head of the Al Ain CID said he was concerned women in a modern, well-educated and ethical society had been driven to follow such practices that contradicted logic, Islam and the law. Last witch executed in Europe cleared
BERN, Switzerland -- A woman beheaded after she was accused of causing a girl to spit pins and convulse was exonerated Wednesday, more than 200 years after she became the last person executed as a witch in Europe.
The decision to clear Anna Goeldi's name came after long debate in the Swiss state of Glarus, and was taken in consultation with churches.
Several thousand people, mainly women, were executed for witchcraft between the 14th and 18th centuries in Switzerland and elsewhere in Europe. Yet Goeldi's beheading took place when witch trials had largely disappeared.
Goeldi, who was executed in 1782, was a maidservant in the house of prominent burgher Johann Jakob Tschudi. Tschudi, a doctor and magistrate, allegedly had an affair with Goeldi, according to a recent book.
The Glarus government has said that the Protestant Church council, which conducted the trial, had no legal authority to do so and had decided in advance that Goeldi was guilty. She was executed even though the law at the time did not impose the death penalty for nonlethal poisoning.
Goeldi's execution was even more incomprehensible as it happened in the Age of Enlightenment when ''those who made the judgment regarded themselves as educated people,'' the government said. Walpurgis Night - The Other Halloween
I hope you all had a cacklingly good Walpurgis Night! In Sweden, the young jump over a huge bomfire, among many other traditional rituals which include getting very drunk indeed. Click on the picture to read a little bit more on the subject. Yes, we Europeans have two Halloweens, two nights for the witches.
As for myself, I got the unannounced visit of a witch. I let her be, and in the end she left angrily because I simply didn't enter into her games. Then I created a series of fantastic 3D pictures. Countdown To Halloween: Wise Old Crone Or Wizened Hag, Which Witch Are You?
by Marisa
The association of Halloween with witches is as old as the holiday itself and yet witchy interpretations have varied wildly with time. To contemporary American children, the cackling gorgon on her broomstick is textbook nightmare and horror film fodder. To Wiccans and ancient Celts, however, this wart-nosed hag represented the Goddess as woman in the final state of life. Wise with experience, she stirred at her cauldron (womb), wherein the dead awaited their rebirth with the Sun God at Yule. Pagan perspectives often utilize both Goddess and God figures in a yin/yang-like dynamic: the God being born of the Goddess each year and maturing to his death and rebirth, as the Goddess holds constant and immortal.
So, why the huge interpretational chasm? When Pope Gregory IV standardized All Hollows Day (or All Saints Day) from its previous May date to November 1, the Pagan Samhain festival was imbued with Christian meaning. Some of these pieces fit easily - Samhains honoring of the dead became All Hollows Days honoring of the saints - but others, like the powerful crone, were perhaps a bit more threatening, as demonstrated by the European witch hunts spanning 1450-1700. And so what was once a symbol of reverence for death and the life cycle transitioned into a figure of mystical peril.
So, ok, that takes care of the witch and the cauldron, but whats with the broomsticks and flying in the air? The Wiccan broom (or besom) is used to cleanse ritual spaces by literally and figuratively sweeping away negativity, and then stored near a hearth or door to prevent evil from entering. During the Burning Times, witches were accused of flying broom-less, thanks to a grease-based flying ointment. Given that many of the ointments ingredients were hallucinogenic (hemp, belladonna, and poppy), another interpretation is that flying may have referred to astral projection.
And then theres that favorite witchy companion: the bat. While nocturnal flight and vampiric associations have long contributed to make the bat a symbol of Halloween hauntings, many Pagans view the bat as a protective presence, harbinger of good fortune, or guide to past lives. Fortunately such dichotomies are in many ways exactly what Halloween is about: the veil between life and death, love and fear, yin and yang. So whether you think shes a magical crone or a terrifying hag, on Samhain, all witches are welcome.

Witches Prediction '08
The New York Center for the Strange (I'm not making this up) has conducted a poll of 355 "statistically representative" witches (really, I'm not making this up) to determine their opinion of the election line up in November '08. The results:
Hillary Clinton and Wesley Clark vs. Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee.
The witches agreed to predict the winner of the election as soon as they could procure an eye of newt for a spell to summon Nostradamus for counsel. (OK, I made that up.)
While the witches claim no prophetic augury of the future, it should be noted that they were correct in the last election. Although, if the Center aims to "upgrade the perception of witches," I'm afraid they might have just lost the support of Obama and Romney voters everywhere!
