German site sued by Facebook
The German company sued by Facebook for running a "knockoff" of the social networking Web site said on Sunday it asked a German court to declare that Facebook's claims are without merit.
Facebook's complaint, filed on Friday in a California federal court, accuses studiVZ of copying the look, feel, features and services of Facebook and seeks "to end StudiVZ's illegal activity" lest Facebook's own reputation be harmed by association.
"As with any counterfeit product, StudiVZ's uncontrolled quality standards for service, features and privacy negatively impact the genuine article," Facebook stated in the complaint.
StudiVZ filed for declaratory judgment at the District Court in Stuttgart, also on Friday.
Facebook's suit also seeks compensatory damages in an amount to be determined at trial.
StudiVZ claims Facebook is suing them only because Facebook has failed to transplant its success in the United States and other countries to the German market.
"Their strategy appears to be: 'If you can't beat them, sue them,"' said Marcus Riecke, chief executive of studiVZ, which is owned by Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, a German publishing company.

Israeli jailed for Facebook photo
"The defence ministry told the BBC military tribunals have investigated and disciplined about 100 soldiers who broke the rules and unwittingly helped the enemy this year."
-
Excerpts from (link, above) the BBC:
Israel has sentenced a soldier to 19 days in jail for uploading a photograph taken on his military base to the social networking website, Facebook.
The Israel Air Force has recently instructed all servicemen under their command who are serving in sensitive units to remove any photos they may have uploaded to Facebook, the Haaretz newspaper reports.
The BBC's Martin Asser says militants in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories are believed to monitor Israeli web forums and communities, including Facebook and the photo sharing site Flickr, to get information.
The defence ministry told the BBC military tribunals have investigated and disciplined about 100 soldiers who broke the rules and unwittingly helped the enemy this year.

MySpace to add new features next month
The social networking giant follows in Facebook's steps with a set of easy apps
MySpace, the popular online community and social networking site, announced plans to add games, email and other features developed by outside providers next month. Adding applications from the outside is possible now, but it’s a little too difficult for the average member, involving cutting and pasting the relevant code from a third party. Now, however, those developers can take the initiative.
A photo-sharing service, for example, could create a MySpace-friendly program that allows users to let their friends flip through photos on their own page, instead of leaving the site.
Facebook and other Web 2.0 leaders have already gone this route, and the experiment has proven successful. The point of all this, of course, is to keep users in the community. If they don’t ever leave, then they don’t go looking at some other site’s ads.
