    • Zimbabwe: Recounting Votes, Timeline, Missing Arms Shipment

Robert Mugabe perpetrates acts of terrorism against his own people. He has ordered that political opponents be jailed, assaulted, and killed.

It is estimated that over 4 million people have fled Zimbabwe and thousands of others are displaced inside Zimbabwe. This means 25% of Zimbabwe's population has left the country. Additional estimates state 70% of Zimbabwe's workforce is now living outside Zimbabwe. This has caused a tremendous "brain drain".

If Zimbabwe had oil, gold, diamonds, or uranium the US would have stepped in. In fact, the US, UK, Russia, and India would be tripping over each other as they all rush to provide help first.

After people discovered the atrocities of the Nazis the world said "never again". Yet it continues to happen - Rwanda, Serbia, Sudan, Iraq, and now Zimbabwe.

      When is enough, enough?

    • Addressing the Nigerian Brain Drain

Africa suffers more than any other continent when it comes to the Brain Drain. In Nigeria, not only does the country suffer, but so do the scientists who choose to stay. Dr. Peace Babalola considers her work "'a real sacrifice. It is patriotism,'" as she works with lack of equipment and supplies, not to mention major depletion of colleagues. If only these countries could keep their intellectuals in, they could release themselves from this vicious cycle. Africa suffers more than any other continent when it comes to the Brain Drain. A Canadian man claims to have recently caught his 15 year-old son smoking pot in the backyard with two of his "delinquent friends." • Brain Drain: Why are so many people leaving Britain?

A report out yesterday suggests Britain may be experiencing a brain drain.

“According to the Office for National Statistics the number of emigrants from the UK rose to a record 400,000 in 2006, the highest number since records began in 1991” with half of those being British citizens.

The Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) said a total of “5.5 million British passport holders live abroad permanently, and another 500,000 live abroad part of the time through second homes.”

So why are so many people leaving the UK?

The IPPR said that almost two-thirds of those who emigrated last year, did so for “work-related reasons”

Understandable. My friend is returning to St. Vincent next week because the job market here has not been very kind to her. And she’s British and a university graduate. When my studies are complete, I’ll probably be doing that myself, having had a similar experience.

According to the report, the most popular destinations for emigrants included France, Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia and the US.

    • Mind Hacks: Ten Ways to Defeat Brain Drain

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." —John Bay

Those of us who feel we are busy all the time can experience burn out, exhaustion and fatigue from spending long periods of time in focused concentration. I like to refer to this as Brain Drain. I used to call it "SAT head" because many students report after taking the SAT tests, they feel an odd mental exhaustion caused by too much focused thinking. Brain drain, if gone unchecked, can result in you feelings of depression, stress or anger if you continue to push after the drain has set in. So even though you might feel pushed to keep with your project nonstop, you would be much more productive if at the first sign of brain drain, you took a break and did something about it.
