Burger King Finally Drops Trans Fat
Burger King Corp. said Thursday it is now cooking with trans fat free cooking oils at all of its restaurants nationwide.
The No. 2 hamburger chain also said all of its menu ingredients, including its baked goods, will contain zero grams of trans fat by Nov. 1.
Trans fats are partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. They can raise bad cholesterol and lower healthy cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease, according to doctors. Trans fats are used to increase the shelf life of foods and preserve flavor.
Many of Burger King's restaurants have already been using trans fat free oil for months. Burger King first announced in July 2007 that it would switch to trans fat free oil in all of its U.S. restaurants by the end of 2008.
"Our suppliers were able to manufacture enough quantity to get us there sooner than our committed deadline," said Chief Executive and Chairman John Chidsey.
Chidsey did not offer any details about the new oils being used at Burger King restaurants, saying the information is "proprietary."
He said customers who have tried the trans fat free foods either do not notice any difference in taste or told the company they tasted better. Eliminating trans fat can change the flavor of foods — a side effect that has made extensive testing of new oils a necessity.
Burger King has been criticized for not switching all of its U.S. restaurants to trans-fat free oil as fast as its competitors.

Family Guy Does Burger King (Or Is It The Other Way Around?)
The creative types whose minds give birth to television shows and movies typically disdain the overt blending of advertising messages with their work. But Burger King found one who doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, he even agreed to create the ads.
Next month, Seth MacFarlane, creator of the “Family Guy” TV series, will unveil a high-profile new project called “Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy,” an animated variety show that will be distributed solely through Google.
The Internet giant will syndicate the new program using its AdSense advertising system to thousands of Web sites that are predetermined to be gathering spots for Mr. MacFarlane’s target audience, typically young men. Instead of placing a static ad on a Web page, Google will place a “Cavalcade” video clip. YouTube will also devote a channel to the material.
Marketing messages will be incorporated into the clips largely through “preroll” ads, but Burger King took its involvement a step further. In a rare example of one of Hollywood’s top creative powers working hand-in-glove with a marketer, Mr. MacFarlane created and animated Burger King ads to play ahead of “Cavalcade” clips.
In one, blue velvet curtains withdraw to reveal an ornate movie screen. The fast-food company’s King mascot, a mute character with a creepy smile, bursts through the center of the screen and runs away. Following him through the ripped screen are menacing-looking Mayans who hurl poison darts in the mascot’s direction. It ends with the Burger King logo.
“The customized lead-ins fit our personality,” said Tiana Lang, Burger King’s director of media and interactive. She added, “His fan base fits perfectly with ours.”
Mr. MacFarlane, who teamed up with Google and Burger King through Media Rights Capital, a boutique production company, created three burger ads. In another one, apes on horseback pop out of the screen instead of Mayan warriors. The spots will play before 10 different “Cavalcade” episodes.
How much does it cost to have Mr. MacFarlane animate material for you? None of the parties involved would talk money, but Google has said previously that the deal was among the largest ever for AdSense, which began in 2003.
------------------------
Is MacFarlane a sell-out or is it smart? Do you feel betrayed that everyone's favorite nonsensical satirical comedy is being used for pure advertisement or could you care less.
Will you watch it?

Mr. Unstable BATHING IN BURGER KING KITCHEN SINK
A Burger King in Ohio is in hot water with the health department after a video surfaced of an employee taking a bath in the kitchen sink, according to a news report.
The four-minute video, posted on MySpace, shows an employee who calls himself "Mr. Unstable" bathing in a large stainless steel sink, reported WDTN in Xenia, Ohio.
The video was seen by the county's health commissioner, Mark McDonnell.
"My first thought was oh my god," McDonnell told WDTN.
He immediately sent staff to the restaurant to investigate the numerous health code violations. A Burger King in Ohio is in hot water with the health department after a video surfaced of an employee taking a bath in the kitchen si... more -

Worlds most expensive burger
Money can't buy you good taste but it can definitely buy you the most expensive burger in the world. Named simply, The Burger, it is selling at 95 pounds ($185) at a Burger King in the exclusive district of South Kensington on Wednesday.
The limited edition of the burger, which can be bought for two days only and has so far sold 50, is challenging the current Guinness Record for the most expensive burger, currently held by the American Double Truffle Burger which cost just 65 pounds ($127) in 1994.
Mark Dowding, a chef with Burger King (nyse: BKC - news - people ) for the last 12 years and the creator of the burger, told Forbes.com the location had been chosen because "there are different pockets for different tastes. And we are sure this is an area of a lot of burger aficionados."
And the secret to its strong taste? "Its massaged Japanese Wagyu beef," Dowding said.
The burger, the size and looks of a regular whopper, is made out of ingredients from seven countries, from Japan to France.
Some restaurateurs dismissed the burger, spiced with organic white wine and pink Himalayan rock salt, as a "marketing stunt" comparing it with similar products launched by department stores like Selfridges and its 85 pound sandwich and Peter Jones's 50 pound cup of coffee pre-digested by a Civet cat Money can't buy you good taste but it can definitely buy you the most expensive burger in the world. Burger Bling: $200 Burger made with Cristal Champagne
Their slogan is "Have it your way," but before you sink your teeth into this burger you'd better check your bank balance.
A new burger went on sale Wednesday only in Britain. It may not only be the world's most expensive, but it could also be the most controversial, too.
It comes from Burger King, but Burger "Bling" may be more like it.
Is it mouthwatering? Maybe. But it comes at an eye-watering price -- a whopping $200.
"That would have to be one really, really special burger," Erika Baroness Von Schubert said. "I'd give it a go."
Burger chef Mark Dowding said the formula is simple.
"Like any good food you start out with great ingredients," Dowding said.
Or most expensive. Check this out. The burger's ingredients include the following: Japanese wagyu beef, white truffles, onions fried in Cristal champagne, topped with pink Himalayan rock salt.
They even sold a few, with one Burger King employee saying how a couple split the bill.
Now of course, if you're dropping the better part of $200 on a burger, you don't really want to be washing it down with any old soft drink, which is why if you're eating in you get a complimentary glass of wine.
"Well, that would probably make the burger go down easier, right?" said Walter Nasdeo of New York.
What's not going down so easily is Burger King's controversial concept of "delicious decadence" during a time of global economic meltdown and worldwide food shortages. Food crisis campaigners view it as the wrong burger at the wrong place at the wrong time.
"To come out with this kind of hugely expensive and over-the-top burger and to have 800 million people going to bed hungry every night is just to shoot yourself in the foot," said Dave Tucker of the organization "War On Want."
Not everybody's buying it.
"Never in a million years," said Gary Higgerson of London. "No way."
The food chain's flipping all the proceeds of the megabucks burger to a children's charity in London. They're hoping that might make the price easier to swallow. Their slogan is "Have it your way," but before you sink your teeth into this burger you'd better check your bank balanc... more -
More Corporate Interference in Tomato Fight
After Burger King's own version of a Spygate Scandal last month, the corporation suddenly abandoned their crusade to smear CIW's name and quickly signed an agreement with their terms (1 penny more per pound, which will double workers' wages, and a human rights agreement). Now The Florida Growers Tomato Exchange is trying to block the agreement from another angle. Is this a coincidence? Why would they try to block an agreement that would cost their consumers nothing? Could Burger King have influenced this decision? Or is that train of thought just leftist paranoid delusion? Discuss! Finally! A burger built for 6 (but will probably be eaten by 1)
You know all those times when you’re like “Damn, I would love to get some burgers for the whole family, but I don’t want to order them individually,” so, you order a pizza instead? Yeah, me neither. But apparently, Burger King thinks we’re all having a whole lot of these moments as they’re going to start offering a six-pack of burgers in an attempt to compete with the pizza market.
How does a six-pack of burgers differ from six individual burgers? Glad you asked.
The rolls of the six burgers will be stuck together, so to grab a burger, you’ll have to tear one off. Just like when you grab a piece of pizza. And just like you can order a pizza half cheese/half pepperoni (or whatever your tastes enjoy), one pair of these burgers will be topped with ketchup, another with cheese, and another with bacon and cheese.
Unfortunately, these burgers are only launching in the UK, Germany, and Spain. Let’s hope and pray that they do well over there so that they come here soon. Until then, I guess we’re just going to be stuck ordering pizza when we’re craving a shared meal. Or drinking a six-pack of beer. That could work too. You know all those times when you’re like “Damn, I would love to get some burgers for the whole family, but I don’t want to order them... more -
