Motorola seeks to hire up to 300 Google Android developers
Palm may not have much of an appetite for Google's Android platform for mobile phones, but Motorola definitely does.
Reports in Top Tech News and elsewhere suggest that Motorola is looking to hire hundreds of Google Android developers. Indeed, a quick search of Motorola's job openings suggests that, indeed, Android is set to become a permanent fixture at Motorola, which has long built Linux-based phones but hitherto used MontaVista's Mobilinux.
The goal? Move from an internal development pool of 50 Android-savvy developers to 350. Palm may not have much of an appetite for Google's Android platform for mobile phones, but Motorola definitely does. ... more -

Google's Android phone to go on sale in September?
On Tuesday, T-Mobile and Google announced the first-ever handset with Google's new Android operating system.
Called the T-Mobile G1, it has both full touch-screen functionality, a QWERThe Google Android phonTY keyboard, a trackball for one-handed navigation, plus access to mobile Web applications like Google Maps Street View, Gmail, YouTube, and more. How Many Google Phone Engineers Does It Take to Tell the Time?
So here I was, all excited about Android. Not because the G1's physical design is specially attractive. In fact, it's a gray design with no soul. Not because of the user interface, which at first glance reminded me of a mash-up between the Nintendo DS and a '90s Windows desktop manager. No, I was excited because this is the first post-iPhone smartphone that could be a serious challenger to Apple's mounting dominance. Then I looked closely at this image and realized the G1 will not pose a threat to Apple at all.
The problem in this promotional mock-up image is obvious: The analog clock says it's 9:10 but the digital clock says it's 2:47.
I know. It seems like a dumb problem. But it is an obvious one. This is one of their main promotional images—which incidentally shows a T-Mobile G1 with a screen that seems to be broken, something which is bad enough on its own—and they failed to get it right. The problem with the clocks would have never escaped Apple's ferocious attention to detail, but it is not the image itself that's so troubling. It is what it symbolizes, what is missing at Android's most fundamental level: Attention to detail. So here I was, all excited about Android. Not because the G1's physical design is specially attractive. In fact, it's a gray... more -
Google phone to cost $179, debut Oct. 22
NEW YORK - The first cell phone running Google Inc.'s mobile software looks something like Apple Inc.'s iPhone and has a large touch screen, but it also packs a trackball, a slide-out keyboard and easy access to Google's e-mail and mapping programs.
Google made its debut as a cell phone software provider Tuesday at an event where wireless carrier T-Mobile said it will begin selling the G1 phone for $179 with a two-year contract. The device hits U.S. stores Oct. 22 and heads to Britain in November and other European countries early next year.
The phone will be sold in T-Mobile stores only in the U.S. cities where the company has rolled out its faster, third-generation wireless data network. By launch, that will be 21 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Houston and Miami.
In other areas, people will be able to buy the phone from T-Mobile's Web site. The phone does work on T-Mobile's slower data network, but it's optimized for the faster networks. It can also connect at Wi-Fi hotspots.
The data plan for the phone will cost $25 per month on top of the calling service, at the low end of the range for data plans at U.S. wireless carriers. NEW YORK - The first cell phone running Google Inc.'s mobile software looks something like Apple Inc.'s iPhone and has a lar... more -

Google's Android for phones nearing release
The first mobile device built around Android will be carried by T-Mobile in a still-unnamed handset designed by Taiwanese smartphone powerhouse HTC. The Android phone will go up against Apple's iPhone, Research In Motion’s BlackBerry and a host of devices powered by Nokia’s Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating systems. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)
While every market Google has entered is highly competitive, none may be more so than the mobile phone market, specifically the market for smartphones, which can handle e-mail and Web surfing.
Open Handset Alliance backing
While it’s Google that’s putting together Android, it’s also the culmination of work by the Open Handset Alliance, a collaborative group including Google and more than 30 semiconductor and software companies, mobile operators and handset manufacturers. Alliance members include Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, Intel, Motorola, HTC, eBay, LG and Samsung.
Jason Mackenzie, vice president of HTC America, which uses Windows Mobile in its other phones, is confident about Android’s prospects.
“Millions of people rely on Google services and applications every day on their PCs — whether it’s for search, maps, e-mail,” he said. “We believe that the ability to provide this same rich experience on a mobile device is a powerful proposition for a wide range of consumers.”
While Android is an operating system, it is also an open-source system similar to Linux, upon which it is based. That’s creating a lot of excitement and interest in the kind of programs that will be available for users, including one that can track family members’ whereabouts in an emergency to another that offers a short cooking video, followed by information on nearby grocery stores that carry the ingredients needed for the recipe.
Since its inception, Android has been tweaked and built upon freely by developers, device designers and wireless carriers who have had complete access to Android’s Software Developer Kit. Basically, Android is whatever users and developers want it to be.

Google: Android-based HTC Dream may not be alone for long
Hot on the heels of FCC approval of HTC's "Dream" phone, Google has hinted to BetaNews that the "Dream" isn't the only Android phone already under way.
"To prepare for Android's public launch, we are testing the platform on a variety of devices," a Google spokesperson said, in an e-mail to BetaNews.
Documents on the US Federal Communications Commission's Web site now show that it has approved a handset of the type "Dream" and model name "DREA100," and that the same device has received a Wi-Fi Interoperability Certification for 802.11 b/g.
Meanwhile, a letter from HTC has come to light asking the FCC for confidentiality of "indefinite" duration around a set of attached documents that includes the schematic diagram, block diagram, theory of operation, and bill of materials for an unnamed piece of equipment.
Dated June 18, 2008, the letter from HTC senior manager Dalton Chuang also requests "short-term" confidentiality until November 10, 2008 of external, internal, and test set-up photos, in addition to a user manual.
It isn't exactly clear from the letter whether Chuang is referring to the Dream phone -- widely expected to emerge as the first device for Google's Android platform -- or some other device. But HTC officials have previously stated publicly that the manufacturer will come to market with an Android phone this year.
Likewise, officials of T-Mobile have issued public statements that the mobile provider will start offering an Android-enabled phone on its network by the end of this year, although they have shied away from specifically identifying that device.
Other documents now posted on the FCC's site reveal that the "DREA 100" has been tested both on WCDMA 1700 bands -- T-Mobile's preferred 3G frequency -- and GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900 bands. There are references to a "jogball" on the "Dream" phone, as well as to compliance with Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR.
In previous e-mails to BetaNews, Google spokespersons have cited plans to offer the Android platform across a variety of devices and wireless networks. However, this week's e-mail is the first communication to BetaNews to acknowledge actual testing of Android on multiple devices.
BetaNews received the e-mail in answer to a request for confirmation or denial of details about an Android phone -- said to be the HTC Dream -- obtained by BusinessWeek magazine from Moe Tanabian, senior principal at IBB Consulting. Tanabian also raised questions about the availability of Microsoft Exchange support for the phone.
An article in BusinessWeek, based on Tanabian's account, refers to features that include pre-installed advertising software from Google and a trackball for one-handed navigation. Google had previously demo'd an earlier prototype of an Android-enabled phone for developers in June.

Google's mobile phone plans hit delays
New mobile phones being developed by Google and more than 30 partners based on software called Android will arrive in the fourth quarter, a schedule that some cellular carriers and program makers are struggling to meet.
Google had said in November that the phones would come out by the second half of 2008. Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA expects to deliver an Android-powered phone in the fourth period, but Sprint Nextel will not be able to.
China Mobile, the world's largest wireless carrier with nearly 400 million subscriber accounts, likely will have its launch delayed until late this year or early 2009.
Android also has not won broad support from large mobile-software developers, and some said it is hard to develop programs while Google makes changes as it finishes its own software. Google unveils iPhone 'killer'
"Google unveiled the software for its much-anticipated new phone last week, and it's loaded with fun features, including an unlocking tool that allows users to create a secret shape that must be drawn on the screen.
The phone will, naturally, feature the Google Web browser, Google Mail and Google Maps. The Street View feature, similar to what you can get on your desktop with Google Maps, will turn in The same direction as the person holding the phone.
The phone will also include a compass, magnifying tool and a version of the game Pac-Man. Its touch-screen technology will be similar to that of an Apple iPhone, but it will also be able to work with a tracking ball.
Google is not making the phones, just working to develop the Android operating system that manufacturers will install. Companies such as Samsung and Motorola have said they will make phones that run on Android."
