Neocons already knew ISI was planning to rig elections
Robert Novak: Was the president of the United States issuing Musharraf a free pass to rig next month's elections in Pakistan?
Bhutto didn't trust the White House with her report about ISI and Ijaz Shah rigging the elections. Election rigging done with US money. Her requests for security were rebuffed by the CIA and the White House. If Bush Sr. put his foot down to protect her in 1988, why didn't George W. do the same? A Sad End to a Triumphant Human Spirit
Benazir Bhutto's assassination is a sad end to a political entity that could have restored hope in a tattered country. But, she was a triumphant sort of human that was fueled by being who she was and how she wanted to live her life despite immanent danger surrounding her every move. Nawaz Sharif Prevented From Running in Pakistan Elections
Sharif, a former prime minister of the country and a vocal opposition leader had filed papers to run for office, but had also not rule out boycotting the elections. Now apparently, Pakistan's election officials have made the decision for him, ruling that due to his previous criminal convictions, he is disqualified from running.
Now we just have to wait and see what the fallout from this will be. I predict this adds fuel to the opposition fire, with cries that the election officials are puppets, and that Pervez Musharraf continues to pull the strings. Thoughts? Sharif, a former prime minister of the country and a vocal opposition leader had filed papers to run for office, but had also not rule... more -

Another Musharraf Foe Returns to Pakistan
Former premier Nawaz Sharif filed his papers to be a candidate in Pakistan's elections in January, but has said he will not serve in a government under President Pervez Musharraf. He also said the elections would only be acceptable if the state of emergency was lifted and the constitution reinstated. Benazir Bhutto has also filed papers to run, though both have said they would consider boycotting the election if Musharraf does not end military rule.
Musharraf, meanwhile, is expected to step down from his role as army general, and be sworn in as a civilian president on Thursday, 11/29. Former premier Nawaz Sharif filed his papers to be a candidate in Pakistan's elections in January, but has said he will not serve in a... more -
2 Suicide Attacks Kill 35 in Pakistan
Suicide bombers hit a bus carrying intelligence agency employees and a checkpoint near the headquarters of the Pakistan army on Saturday, killing at least 35 people. Musharraf declared the state of emergency on Nov. 3, justifying it by citing the escalating danger posed by Islamic extremists, though his critics have noted many of his moves have been against political opponents rather than militants. The 53-nation Commonwealth suspended Pakistan's membership on Thursday, after President Pervez Musharraf failed to meet the November 22 deadline to lift emergency rule and resign as army chief.
Musharraf has begun rolling back some elements of emergency rule and Pakistani officials say he will be sworn in as a civilian leader within days.
But the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG), charged with reviewing Pakistan's membership, said: "The situation in Pakistan continues to represent a serious violation of the Commonwealth's fundamental political values." Musharraf Court Approves Musharraf Election
That's a surprise, huh? What (also) isn't surprising is that opponents are pissed, saying the Musharraf appointed court is illegitimate. But, it's something of a catch-22 - if they accept the new court's ruling, Musharraf has said he'd cut his ties to the army and the sooner things calm down in the country, the sooner he might end the emergency rule, which everyone wants.
