Subliminal Message In McCain’s New Ad?
Did you catch it? At the beginning of the ad, the title burns onto a picture of Obama, but the order is striking.
A L Q D C MT RY
al Qaeda Commentary? al Qaeda Cemetary? al Qaeda Documentary? Who knows? But it’s not accidental. In fact, Alex Castellanos is reportedly now working for the McCain campaign. Who is Alex Castellanos?
There is speculation in the blogosphere that Alex Castellanos is behind this video. Who? This guy:
The Republican media consultant Alex Castellanos has been called the father of the modern political attack ad — an appellation he might not offer up himself, though we suspect he’s kinda proud of it. Although Castellanos has served on the GOP media team in every general election since 1988, his most infamous spot ran in the 1990 North Carolina Senate race between Jesse Helms and Harvey Gantt, the former mayor of Charlotte, who also happened to be an African-American. The commercial was called “Hands,” and it showed a white guy sitting at a table, the camera trained on his mitts as he crumpled up a job-rejection notice. “You needed that job and you were the best qualified,” intoned the voice-over. “But they gave it to a minority because of a racial quota.” Ugly? Sure. But it won reelection for Helms. In this year’s Republican race, Castellanos worked on Mitt Romney’s primary bid, but today he sits on what’s known as the McCain Ad Council, a group of A-list Republican admen serving as outside media advisers to the GOP standard-bearer. Did you catch it? At the beginning of the ad, the title burns onto a picture of Obama, but the order is striking. ... more -
McCain rides the swiftboat express
John McCain is clearly in bed with the swiftboat group Vets For Freedom.
I would love to see how the right would react to Obama laying down with the moveon.org people.

Eating A Reuben Amidst A Crowd Of Protesting Clintonites
May 31, 2008 06:54 PM
When is a Reuben sandwich not just a Reuben sandwich? When one eats it amidst a denizen of rabidly committed, frequently vitriolic, and unapologetically devoted Hillary Clinton supporters.
The scene at Harry's Pub in the Marriott Hotel, downstairs from the site of the Rules and Bylaws Committee hearing, was emblematic of the double-edged sword that has become the Democratic primary. One the one hand was the political passion: the willingness to stand in solidarity over the idea of counting the votes in Michigan and Florida, even if such a protest was scheduled on a Saturday under torrential rain.
On the other hand were the battered emotions: the ardent vows to not support Sen. Barack Obama under any circumstances, the insistence that every insidious rumor concerning the Illinois Democrat was grounded in fact, the belief that the party itself had conspired in an effort to tear down the Clintons.
With half a dozen flat screen televisions turned to CNN, it was not difficult to ascertain just where the political and emotional center of the crowd stood. A table of three women did not deal in discretion. A sampling of their punditry:
"[Obama] is a cult. His campaign is an anti-woman cult."
"I will actively campaign against him."
"You know who is backing him is George Soros. It'll be George Soros, not Obama, who is running the country."
"South Dakota is totally rigged for Obama because of Tom Daschle. Obama's going to win South Dakota because he's buying it and rigging it."
"[Obama] is a socialist! You know what the Nazi Party was before it was the Nazi Party? It was the Socialist Party."
It was not all that different from the mood outside, where signs read, "At least slaves were counted as 3/5ths a Citizen," and some pamphlets detailed Obama's supposed dealings in drugs and gay sex. The latter being handed out by Larry Sinclair, the youtube opportunist who has claimed to have had an affair with the Senator.
"Would you rather have a president who had an affair [Bill Clinton] or one who was a murderer [Obama]?" Eve Fairbanks, a reporter with The New Republic, was asked by one protester.
Back in Harry's, passions did not ebb. Amidst the chatter came raucous cheers for any Clinton surrogate whose face popped up on the television screen. They were countered by derisive boos when CNN cut to a clip of DNC Chairman Howard Dean. It didn't matter what he said. You couldn't hear it over the crowd's hissing.
I approached a group of Clinton supporters sitting at the bar to pinpoint, exactly, the foundation of their emotions. Almost unanimously they agreed that if Florida and Michigan weren't seated in their entirety, they would never vote for Obama.
As women, were they comfortable with a candidate like John McCain who could potentially overturn Roe v. Wade?
"Oh don't pull that argument," said Valerie Duhaime of Florida. "Obama did not support a filibuster of [Supreme Court Justice Samuel] Alito and he was for [Chief Justice] John Roberts before he was against him."
Within the pub's confines, Obama was not the only persona non grata. The media, too, occupied a dark place in the crowd's heart. The group at the bar went through a litany of websites that they no longer read -- including the Huffington Post. "I only watch the BBC," said Duhaime. "We are outsourcing the fourth estate."
Shortly after revealing my publication, I was turned away. No worries, my lunch, a Reuben sandwich, had arrived. I pulled up my chair to the table and sat down to eat. Minutes later a chant began around me.
"HuffPost sucks! HuffPost sucks!" and later, "Fox News, fair and balanced! Fox News, fair and balanced!" I saw an interesting article from Sam Stein of The Huffington Post. So funny and sad at the same time ... more -
Crooks and Liars » FBI Looking For Moles For GOP Convention Protestors
Discourse.net:
This gets complicated. According to - City Pages (Minneapolis/St. Paul), Moles Wanted, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is recruiting people to infiltrate anti-GOP protest groups in the run-up to the upcoming Republican convention.
The law is clear that police may attend public meetings undercover to see what people are up to. And of course undercover operations in private settings are also legal, although there should be guidelines as to when they are appropriate. And of course it’s good citizenship for private citizens to report crimes when they witness them.
But this story raises a number of serious questions.
First, there’s this: the FBI told the potential informant that he “would be compensated for his efforts, but only if his involvement yielded an arrest. No exact dollar figure was offered.”
In other words, the FBI is recruiting unpaid volunteers to become infiltrators. And they get paid only if they give information leading to an arrest. Which creates a serious incentive for agents provocateurs. This is not a sensible policy at all. It is in fact a very bad idea.
Second, there’s the weird description of the targets — “vegan potlucks” — and the general sense of massive overkill, which contributes to the chilling effect discussed in the article.
I also wonder whether a similar effort is underway for the Democratic convention (not that two wrongs make a right). If it is not, would that be because of a political bias in the FBI, or a considered judgment that McCain is more likely to be a target of violence than the first Black (or female) major-party Presidential candidate?
EmptyWheel:
Now, maybe the vegans we’ve got here in Michigan are dramatically different from those infesting Minnesota. But where I’m from, vegans tend to be fairly peaceful people. If they’re unwilling to steal a bee’s honey, I figure, they’re going to be unwilling to use force to make their point. So I’m really curious how this operation got beyond the “mere speculation that force or violence might occur” that the US Attorney’s own guidelines demands. And if you’re really intent on infiltrating groups of vegans in anticipation of a bunch of violence-loving Republicans coming to town, why use the JTTF? Last I heard, we were so threatened by terrorists that we had to give up all our phone data to AT&T. But now we’ve got time to infiltrate vegans. Discourse.net: ... more -
my letter to Hillary Clinton
I'm sure your far too busy of a woman right now to read this but if you do I just want you to know a few things.
I'm in Michigan and when it came time to vote in our primary i was informed by you, Barack and the DMC that delegates weren't being seated. It wasn't a concern of yours at the time because as far as most people knew, you had this nomination sewed up.
I wasn't given a fair shot to vote and please don't insult my intelligence by saying Barack Obama fought against a recount.
Most of us are smart enough to know about the rules, how they were broken and how you and Obama had nothing to say against it at the time. Now I see you yesterday in Florida comparing this situation to the 2000 election when the nomination was stolen. When you talk about Florida and Michigan being screwed over its obvious that your only speaking of the ones that voted for you. What do you have to say about the Obama supporters that didnt even get a chance at a fair primary? If delegates are seated how is that fair to them? If the citizens of Michigan thought that the rules would possibly change or that delegates were going to be thrown in at the last minute do you honestly think things would be the same?
Im an Obama supporter and I will still vote for you if you get the nomination. Unlike 41% of your Kentucky supporters that say they will vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee.
Now do you just want to sit back and claim that as your base or will you denounce the obvious disastrous thinking of Kentucky and WV voters? Please show the rest of the left that your not trying to get McCain in the white house if you lose the nomination. If Barack loses in November you can run again in 2012 as opposed to 2016. Its what a lot of people are thinking and besides that Its what Ive heard directly from the mouth of some of your supporters. I had one lady tell me she would actually take four years of McCain if it meant you get to run again in 2012. Am I missing something here or am I right to think that McCain in the white house would destroy this country beyond repair.
Im not asking you to drop out of the race because im sure Obama supporters wouldn't want that if he was in your shoes. All im asking is that you do whatever you can to ensure that Obama can beat McCain in the fall. If you turn uninformed voters in Florida and Michigan against him the democratic party will never rebound from it. I'm sure your far too busy of a woman right now to read this but if you do I just want you to know a few things. ... more -

Darwinism PWNED!!! The stupidity and delusion of evolution
Supposedly evolutionists have been hard at work for years "perfecting" their "theory" advocating it as fact that demand dissidents be ridiculed for, while they dismiss every other theory of origins for a staunchly atheist viewpoint to science. John McCain’s real record on MLK
(Video courtesy of the DNC)
John McCain continued his campaign tour by visiting Arkansas on Friday. In front of a predominantly African-American audience, McCain again misrepresented his record opposing the Martin Luther King holiday.
McCain claimed to have voted against a federal holiday before changing his mind a “very short time after that.” But McCain voted against the federal holiday in 1983, opposed a state holiday in 1987 (four years later), opposed a new federal holiday in 1989 (six years later) and voted against funding for the commission established to encourage all states to recognize the King holiday in 1994—11 years after his vote. Although, when you’ve been around the block for as long as McCain has, maybe 11 years feels like a short time. (Video courtesy of the DNC) ... more -
CIA employees on trial in Europe for kidnapping
And not a peep in the mainstream media, with the exception of this story at CQ Politics.
It’s not easy for me to generate a lot of sympathy for a CIA man involved in a kidnapping, but I feel sorry for Bob Lady.
Lady, many readers will remember, was the CIA’s base chief in Milan, Italy, and nominally in charge of a February 2003 agency operation to snatch an al Qaeda suspect off the city’s streets.
Sounded like a pretty good idea at the time. It was only a few months after we’d been smacked, big time, by al Qaeda killers here.
But the snatch turned into a public relations nightmare two years later when Italian authorities announced they had eyewitnesses and indisputable evidence tying the CIA to the crime.
So last week 26 Americans, most of them CIA employees, went on trial in Milan for kidnapping, albeit in absentia and to little notice here. They are fugitives from justice, with international warrants issued for their arrests.
The central figure in the case has always been “Mr. Bob,” Robert Seldon Lady, a bear-like man with a pasha’s grin who spent a lifetime in the CIA.
He and his wife loved Italy so much they bought a house in the foothills of the Alps and retired there in 2004.
Months later an urgent call came, warning Lady to get out of Dodge — don’t even pack.
The cops were on their way.
Tipped off, the Ladys successfully fled the country. But they left behind a bonanza of evidence in their dream home, not the least of which was a CIA surveillance photo of the kidnap victim, Osama Mustafa Hasan Nasr, known as Abu Omar.
How dumb can you get? Sometimes it seems the CIA’s ineptitude knows no bounds. Read on…
You can’t write stuff like this. The little guy stuck carrying out the operation (that he objected to) had to flee his home to avoid imprisonment, not to mention lost his wife, and all their property in Italy may go to Omar as restitution for his rendition. Don’t get me wrong, he did the rendition, but the station chief who conceived of the plan got a minor “rap on the knuckles” and is now being groomed to take over the New York City office. And the CIA abandoned Lady, disowning him as an employee and refusing to assist him in any way.
So, as with Abu Ghraib, the accountability begins and ends with the least powerful and never makes it up to the top decision makers.

Spitzer's Trysts: Stop Over-Thinking This
copied and pasted in its savory entirety =) ...for all you judgemental hypocrits out there, and even those of you that aren't =D ...
"I'm going to throw the remote through the TV if one more news twink says something on the order of "When we come back, we'll look into what drives a successful man like Eliot Spitzer to risk it all..."
Oh yes, let's convene a panel of experts for that. Let me help you: because he wants to get his nut off! Stop with all the analysis! It never ends, I hear all these people talking about how powerful people think they can get away with anything, so it's a thrill, or that it's for this psychological reason or this one -- please, he wanted to CUM WITH SOMEONE! Stop overthinking this: people need sex, and married people generally aren't getting it. Studies show (OK, I'm making that up, but it's true nonetheless) that people married 20 years only have sex on Valentine's Day, their anniversary, and their birthdays. You can hate me as the messenger, but it's true -- how can anyone be expected to still want to score with someone you've been having sex with for a score? Mr. Spitzer simply wanted what humans desire, to feel that sensational sensation when you're hot for someone, to touch and hug and bump and grind -- this is really not that complicated! If you're ascribing more to it than that, it's probably really more about your own fear that your spouse wants to do the same thing.
Or is doing it. Married people are often starved for sex, touch, affection, not to mention the kinky stuff that wifey definitely won't do. So if you find yourself at such a place in life -- and this is most certainly wives as well -- where you're dieing like this, you can do one of three things: get divorced, cheat, or continue to live a life with little or no passion, sex, etc. It's easy to point fingers, but how about some recognition that society's rules are so at odds with human nature that there are actually no good options for an Eliot Spitzer, and the ZILLIONS OF PEOPLE JUST LIKE HIM, many of who are tut-tut-ing today. I guess a guy is a hero who sticks it out and leads a life of quiet desperation. I'm not so sure it's heroic to make him." copied and pasted in its savory entirety =) ...for all you judgemental hypocrits out there, and even those of you that aren't =D... more -
