  • Public Topic: Everyone is invited to contribute to street children

    • Children of Congo: From war to Witches

      Over five million people have died during the past decade as a result of the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Few people are aware of the unimaginable scale of human suffering, death, and destruction that has occurred in this vast country deep in the heart of Africa. In the aftermath of this brutal war, children have endured the brunt of the suffering. This 67 minute film documents the plight of thousands of street children living in Kinshasa and confirms the wide-spread accusations of child witchcraft, torture and child prostitution. The film also examines the efforts to reintegrate demobilized child soldiers, displaced refugees, and orphaned children following the eruption of the massive Nyiragongo volcano, near the city of Goma in Eastern Congo. These heroic efforts are finally bringing some measure of hope and stability to the lives of the Congolese people.

      A shorter version of the film (56 min. 40 sec.) is also available.

      Volunteer Abroad in Zambia: Volunteering Opportunities

      Volunteering Abroad in Zambia: The republic of Zambia is a landlocked country in south central Africa whose population exceeds 10 million. Due to its high elevation, Zambia has a mild tropical climate. The weather is so pleasant that is has been nicknamed "The air-conditioned state".

      Almost one-third of the country is given over to national parks and game reserves, which is home to some of the most abundant animal populations in Africa including big game animals. The major draw to Zambia is the astonishing Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world, dropping over 330 ft below.

      Zambia is one of the more politically stable countries in Southern Africa with potential to be one of the richest countries on the continent. Today, Zambia is one of the world's poorest and indebted nations with a steady influx of refugees, the effects of HIV/AIDS, poverty and corruption, and food shortages that leaves the country in crisis.

      In Zambia there are 75,000 children who are homeless orphans, many affected by HIV/AIDS. At least 50 per cent of Zambia's populations are expected to die of HIV related diseases in the next three years. Life expectancy is Zambia is only 32.5 years.

      Thousands of children in Zambia live in a land where extreme poverty is the norm, many children are orphaned by AIDS, health care is woefully inadequate and public education is substandard and not free. One thing is clear. Children such as these need our help.

      Our programs in Lusaka and the surrounding towns allow you to take part in meaningful community service work, while discovering the people, sights, smells and tastes of Zambia.

      Volunteering in Zambia is a way to totally immerse yourself in African culture. This is a great opportunity to make life-long friends, learn a new culture from the inside out and discover that one person really can make a difference.

      Volunteer with us and see A Broader View of the World.

    • Mith Samlanh - a program for street children in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

      A short film about a program for street kids in Phnom Penh, Cambodia called Mith Samlanh.

      Mith Samlanh is Khmer for Friends.

      Anyone who has traveled to Phnom Penh has seen the staggering number of street children in Phnom Penh. Someone once told me that handing money to a child on the street is equivalent to telling them that you agree to their lot in life. That's why I love what Mith Samlanh does for street children and their families

      Mith Samlanh’s mission is to get children off the streets. The parents of street children are given an income generating project, Mith Samlanh agrees to buy the product and sell it in there shop with the agreement that the children stay in school, instead of being sent to beg on the street. The shop where the products are sold in Phnom Penh is called Friends n’ Stuff. The charming products are made from local, recycled and easily sources low-cost materials such as recycled newspapers and magazines. So much better than buying a souvenir that is probably made in China

      I love Mith Samlanh’s mission, so I am including it below.

      Mith Samlanh’s mission is:
      1. Meeting the street children's immediate essential needs in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child:
      - the right to life: providing nutritional meals, shelter, a safe environment and medical care;
      - the right to development: providing education and reintegrating them into public school and by developing their curiosity;
      - the right to protection: fighting all forms of abuse against children including physical, sexual, family, and emotional abuse;
      - the right to participation: making children aware of their responsibilities and promoting action within the center and in the community;

      2. Reintegrating the children into their families, into society, into the public school system, into their culture;

      3. and building the capacity of the staff so that
the Cambodian nationals are able to run the
program independent of foreign intervention in
the near future.

      How great is that!!
