    • Google goes gaudy with YouTube ads

Take a look at the image here and you see proof of what we all knew: Google is not going to put its highfalutin ideals above the practical realities of its business.

This is a screen grab of a YouTube player embedded in a blog. [See image in linked story.]

What jumped out at me is how the advertising on the player makes the experience look closer to the gaudiness of MySpace than the sterility of Google. There is one text ad in the upper left corner and another superimposed over the bottom of the screen. (This ad changed several times at the beginning of the clip, then faded out.)

This isn’t a pop-up, 30-second preroll or “hit the monkey” flash ad, but it still is starting to crowd out the experience of watching the actual clip.

And despite what Google says about how advertising is useful content, I’m not sure anyone is going to find a Nissan ad improves the experience of watching that clip. The ad for the book about Barack Obama is plausibly on target.

    • 97% Of YouTube’s Videos Are Deadweight

Google’s problem with YouTube is even bigger than many thought.

More than 97% of YouTube’s videos are deadweight - videos that the company can’t put ads on.

According to Silicon Alley Insider’s Michael Learmonth: We know Google’s (GOOG) YouTube is a tough sell for advertisers. But video site’s sales team may be having an even tougher time than recent reports suggest. YouTube sales manager Brian Cusack says YouTube is able to sell ads against “less than 3%” of the total videos on the site. That shaves more than a point off the 4% floated by the WSJ two weeks ago, which cited “one person familiar with the matter.

As pressure increases for Google to make money with YouTube, videos that are deadweight financially or, worse, billion dollar legal liabilities are likely to make it difficult for the company to compete against sites, like Hulu, that can make money on all of their videos.

Which is best dislay or pay-per-click ads? I often get asked what should be the medium of choice and what works better. • Yahoo-Google agree online ad deal

Yahoo has agreed a deal with Google which will see Yahoo use the search engine giant's advertising technology.

Under the agreement, Google ads will appear alongside some Yahoo search results in the US and Canada.

The announcement came after Yahoo said it had failed to persuade Microsoft to renew its bid to buy all of the internet company. Yahoo said the agreement with Google could be worth up to $800m in additional revenue every year.

The partnership will initially last for three years, but could last up to 10 if Yahoo decides to renew. Google said the deal did not need regulatory approval but that it would delay its implementation by up to three and a half months to give the US Department of Justice a chance to review it.

Recent talks concluded after Yahoo rejected a Microsoft proposal to buy just its online search business.

    • Charter to Snoop on Broadband Customers' Web Histories for Ad Networks

Charter Communications, one of the nation's largest ISPs, plans to begin eavesdropping on customers' web surfing activity, to help web advertisers deliver targeted ads.

In letters being sent to some of its 2.7 million high-speed internet customers, Charter is billing its new web-tracking program as an "enhancement" for customers' web surfing experience. The letters were first reported by a BroadbandReports.com user on Sunday. The pilot program is set to begin next month.

"Browsing the web can become more like flipping through your favorite magazine, where you see ads that are appealing to you and enhance your enjoyment and the utility of the experience," the company's letters read.

Charter's system appears to be similar to a targeted advertising system in the U.K. developed by Phorm, a London company with alleged spyware roots.

Phorm is trying to strike deals with several large British ISPs to install a targeted advertising system to track the web-surfing patterns of broadband customers. Using modified browser cookies, Phorm's system would use surfing patterns to deliver closely targeted ads, and, the company claims, protect against online scams like phishing.

However, Phorm's proposal has set off a storm of consumer protest after it was revealed that British Telecom ran secret trials on thousands of broadband customers. Phorm's opponents include the inventor of the world wide web, Sir Tim Berners Lee, and several prospective advertisers. The U.K. government has said the system would likely be illegal unless explicitly opt-in.

Charter plans to test its program in four markets: Ft. Worth, Texas; San Luis Obispo, California; Oxford, Massachusetts; and Newtown, Connecticut, according to Charter Vice President Ted Schremp.

He described the system as capable of noticing when a user visits Honda.com or Toyota's website, for example, so when the user visits unrelated sites, he or she will be treated to automotive-related ads.

The company is aware of the privacy and transparency concerns, according to Schremp, but believes the program will benefit its customers and its own bottom line.

"The fact that we sent customer notification letters is indicative of the approach we are taking overall," Schremp said. "This is just another example of leveraging the latest technology."

Charter is partnering with a company called NebuAD to build profiles of its users. NebuAD will share the behavioral tracking results with third-party advertising networks like DoubleClick. Users can opt out of the system, but have to give their full name and address to get an opt-out cookie. The process would have to be repeated for every browser on every computer in a home to block the service, and would have to be reset if cookies are ever deleted.

    • Online Less Robust Than You Think, CPMs Headed Down

Most prognosticators predict another booming year for online advertising, but Carl Fremont isn't so sure. Fremont, the global media director for digital ad giant Digitas, says the weakening economy will slow down Web ads as well. He also predicts a tough slog for publishers hoping that online video will give them a shot in the arm: Video is flooding the Web, he says, but most it is unsold and will remain that way.
