    • HUMANS WITH FUNCTIONING FEET - stop landing on your heels and save your knees

This is the first in a series to help people be more functionally fit for life.

      By MAdbALANCE.COM; Dr. Naeem Akram
      - Because your time is now

I believe running is a key element to how we as humans have evolved. Running correctly is a skill to be developed that will help you become more functionally fit for many sports from Parkor to Snowboarding to Golf.

Putting on the latest in technologically cushioned shoes will not help you in the long term. Your feet are designed to be used, not clumped up and landing on your heel as many shoe manufactures would have you believe.

Land on the balls of your feet with the impact point directly under your pelvis. Do not hit the ground in front of your body since this effectively puts your brakes on, reducing efficiency and sending unnecessary shock waves through your body. Proper form that leverages gravity and uses muscle elasticity is something that will take many months to develop but you'll use it for life and will not suffer from injuries. Running correctly is like flying - it's a lot of fun!

We're living longer than ever before, we need to look after ourselves better.

    • Physical fitness tax credit

In the face of waning participation in organized sports, a Calgary Tory MLA is proposing a fitness tax credit to encourage healthier living.

The bill would offer tax relief for annual fees of up to $1,500 per person. If passed, the province would draft a list of qualifying activities, such as hockey, soccer and clubs such as running and hiking groups.

The proposal is designed to push people to be more active and save Alberta's ailing medical system money in the long run. The Calgary Health Region is encouraged by the added focus on wellness in light of ballooning treatment costs.

The federal government introduced a $500 fitness tax credit for 2007, but only for children.

    • American Fitness 2008

After 10 years as a personal trainer I felt confident that I knew enough about how to get a person into the best shape of their life but not enough about the current state of fitness in America.

It certainly seems like we are in the middle of a near catastrophic decline in physical culture here. Despite radical advances in the technology of fitness we still only have about 14% of the population enrolled in a health club. But I wasn't satisfied with just some numbers, I needed to find out firsthand what was going on with fitness in the good ol' USA.

So I grabbed a camera and a mic and headed out to the annual Cub Industry East fitness trade show to talk with fitness entrepreneurs and other professionals to see...

      What's going on in Fitness?

What I found was that fitness technology has improved by leaps and bounds and some people are creating incredible changes in how we approach fitness, interact with fitness equipment, and develop stronger bodies.

And yet we still seem to be a nation with a steadily growing waistline, so I checked out the new fitness gear and asked around this gathering to see what people were experiencing in American physical culture in 2008.

    • Neuroscience shows exercise is 'Miracle-Gro' for the brain!

Lulled into a sedentary lifestyle? Our bodies -- and our BRAINS -- can get flabby from a chronic lack of physical exertion. Psychiatrist and Harvard university professor John Ratey reveals in a new book "Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain" that the single most important tool people have to optimize brain functions *is* exercise.

Cognitive performance increases, the effects of stress are lessened, and even the negative consequences of women's hormonal changes can be "toned down." Neuroscience discoveries show that BDNF -- brain-derived neurotrophic factor [a protein that helps build and maintain the cell circuitry in the brain] is elevated with exercise.

Exercise benefits include delaying cognitive decline by as much as seven to 10 years! It plays a huge role in maintaining and regaining cognitive function.

Change your BRAIN for the better!

      Exercise! =)

    • CrossFit

I have been doing the CrossFit workouts for a little over 2 months now, and it is by far the most amazing thing I have ever been submitted to. The way they have formulated these workouts not only works, it motivates you to push yourself beyond your limits. These are the same workouts that law enforcement, Navy Seals, and the Spartans from the movie "300" use to get fit and stay in shape. There is a daily workout for people to follow, although I would recommend trying to find a nearby CrossFit gym to see if you can join in with them.
