Creative Training!

Promo for City on Steroids
You've never heard of the city of Chongqing. You can't point it out on a map. You can't even pronounce it (it's CHONG-CHING). But what you need to know is that China is building megacities like this at a pace and scale the world has never seen before. Chongqing has 12 million people and counting. It's part of the central government's plan to bring some of China's economic boom to its impoverished interior province where three out of four Chinese live. Will China's massive experiment in urbanization pay off, bringing wealth and stability, or will it cause as many social and environmental problems as it solves?
Vanguard takes you on a whirlwind tour of the city---from inside a cramped boarding house where migrant workers live to a starter apartment coveted by China's new class of yuppies; from inside ancient, crumbling teahouses to gleaming new car factories. Chongqing is a dynamic microcosm of what’s happening in the country that's changing the face of our planet.
Tune in Tonight, May 7. 10PM EST AND PST You've never heard of the city of Chongqing. You can't point it out on a map. You can't even pronounce it (it's CHONG-CHING). But what... more -

UK social
Here's a piece I'm really proud of which I recently created for Current TV. It aims to examine what it's like to live in the UK today, through portraying it's diverse community of people, and exploring the possible connections & conflicts between them. It’s about a chance to enrich our lives, celebrate our lives, and the chance to change for the better. Hope you like it.
I re-cut & remixed The National's ‘Fake Empire’, which works perfectly to set an emotional & powerful mood.

Future Superpowers
We were brought up in an era where America was heralded as the world's ‘Superpower’. But with Beijing 2008 in sight, an incoming US president, Putin's new Russia and a burgeoning India, change is in the air.
Have we learnt our lessons from the past? Is there hope for the future? Which of these socio-political powerhouses will shape our world in the next 30 years, and will it be a better world?
This is the main promo from my UK campaign for the Current TV 'Future Superpowers' season, airing April 19th to the 25th. I used a lot of archive stills and audio in this piece (as well as great footage from Current), to create a big impact, dark atmosphere, questioning mood, and hopefully make it an intriguing topic for everyone. After-all, we all have to live here.

Britishness
Is Britishness all about ASBO’s, prejudice, cynicism and a patriotic vacuum? Or are we still eccentric world-beaters with a unique self-belief & attitude? Are we proud to be British?
This is a frank look at modern Britain and what it means to be a young person living here. The promo campaign starts airing on Current from March 8th, and the stunt itself will run from March 21st to the 24th.

Lightwriting
This promo campaign of mine has been up on Current TV for a while now but I thought I'd write a little something about it here.
I wanted to create something innovative with the Current identity and give it a strong UK attitude, flavour and voice. I chose to work with a German visuals group called Lichtfaktor, masters of this striking lightwriting motif, to create what I feel are a memorable series of promos for Current.
Although the technique of Light Writing has been around for a long time, visual artists such as Lichtfaktor have brought it back to life with some dazzling projects. In a world where realistic CGI graphics are commonplace, the results achieved with Light Writing look all the more spectacular and unique because they’re created for real, in-camera. The technique is essentially animating with light, using a stills camera set on a long exposure, and a variety of light sources. It’s something anyone can do, but very few people can do well.
I approached Marcel Panne from Lichtfaktor to lend their expertise in order to create this series of branding promos portraying Current TV’s arrival in the UK. We hit it off immediately (both coming partly from a VJ background), and were quickly able to develop the traditional light trails idea with a unique new light stamp technique, which would give us an accurate rendition of the Current logo.
The rest was just a hell of a lot of late night/early morning shooting, then pain staking animation and editing. They supplied the crucial technique and expertise, and also acted as specialist crew on the shoot. They then composited sequences, which I knocked into shape in terms of animation and edited. The music I eventually chose to work with was from the talented artist Maps (a track called ‘Don’t Fear’), lending an appropriate mood and atmosphere the pieces.
I’m very proud to have worked with the talented Lichtfaktor crew to create this unique series of promos for Current.
