    • Hardcore Electro meets a Jamaican slaughterhouse // THE SYSTEM

The System by Waterhouse artist Terry Lynn is the first music video combining the efforts of The Rickards Brothers and is meant to serve as a hard introduction to the creative abilities of the team.

The System was shot on location in Porus, Jamaica utilising HD video and Rickards' still-photography techniques.

The composition, texture and use of natural light in The System is intentionally similar to a series of photographs taken by Rickards in 2007 known as 'Friday Morning Market'.

The photographs from this series documented a day in the life of a typical slaughterhouse located at the back of a community market in rural Jamaica.

In The System, the struggling of doomed animals, the brutality and indifference of the butchers and the slaughterhouse itself will be presented as a series of visual metaphors that relate to the lyrics in Lynn's song.

To be precise, the violence and nonchalance of the killers are direct references to the police while the pigs are a clear reference to the victims of police violence within a seemingly inescapable garrison - the slaughterhouse.

    • Teenager shot dead in South London after being chased into shop

A teenager was shot dead last night after being followed by a gang of youths into a grocery shop in South London. After the fatal shot was fired inside a branch of Costcutter on Camberwell Road, Southwark, a group of suspects fled the scene on mopeds.

When I was growing up in South London, there was at least honour among thugs that fighting and a punch up was enough to resolve arguments. Since them youts have been playing to much Grand Theft Auto and listening to 50 cent everyone wants to pull out a gun now.

      Woe to the mainstream.

This is a 30 second PSA that I wanted to make in an attempt to draw attention to the astounding costs of being disabled.
The inspiration this clip is that of Eric Thomas, who was shot in the neck 10 years ago. He is quite an inspirational guy for someone paralyzed from the neck down. He brought these issues to my eyes and let me use his gear to illustrate our point. The Ad Council is not interested in this clip, because there is not a “worthy cause” or non-profit aligned with us, so maybe current tv can be the outlet for our message.

    • Firefighter killed by gun shot on the scene

Ryan Hummert, 22, a firefighter in Maplewood, Missouri (suburb of St. Louis) was responding to a call about a pick up truck that was in flames. He arrived to the scene to help save lives and by a horrible twist of fate his life was taken. Not by the fire but by a gunman hiding in a house across the street. Two other policemen were then shot but only Ryan's shot was fatal. The gunman set the car on fire to lure firemen and cops there to shoot them and then set the house he was in on fire which is to believed to be his own. There is no known motive and it has not yet been determined whether the gunman killed himself in his burning house or ran away. This has been a horrible event for the St. Louis area and all those who knew and loved Ryan. Please keep his family and friends in mind and in prayers. • NRA sues San Francisco

A day after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Americans have a constitutional right to possess guns for self-defense, the National Rifle Association sued San Francisco and its Housing Authority for banning firearms in the authority's public housing.

The NRA filed in federal court Friday on behalf of an unidentified gay man living in Valencia Gardens Housing in the Mission District, who said he keeps a gun in his home for protection against hate crimes even though his Housing Authority lease forbids possession of guns and other weapons.

The suit said the Housing Authority policy was based on a 2007 San Francisco ordinance prohibiting guns on city property. The ordinance applies only to city-owned property such as parks and playgrounds and not to the independently managed, federally funded Housing Authority. But the authority's interim director, Mirian Saez, said the ban on guns is consistent with city policy and is similar to rules in most such agencies around the nation.

    • Student wanted to break school massacre record

A teenage boy charged with plotting a Columbine-like massacre at his Indiana high school wrote that he wanted to "break the current shooting record" and could "kill anyone without feeling sorry because society sucks!!!" In entries in a spiral notebook seized from his locker in late-April, Russell Frantom, 16, noted that he sought the "instant recognition" that a school shooting would afford him, and that he and a friend had picked September 11 as the attack date "because it's already iconic."

Police began investigating Frantom after he posted an inflammatory April 8 comment on a public MySpace page for Penn High School. Referring to Columbine gunmen Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris as "martyrs," Frantom wrote that he wished that a school attack would occur. The online discussion thread was prompted by the discovery of a threat written on the wall of a school bathroom warning that "everyone was going to die" on April 18. Frantom and Billi are facing conspiracy to commit murder charges. Billi was also hit with child porn charges after investigators discovered illicit images of minors during a search of his computer equipment.

Check out the link for the actual documents and the student's violent MySpace messages.

    • Chicago in the lead for Murder Capital 2008

In a city where there has been a hand-gun ban on the books since the early 80's, shootings are on the rise again. Not since 2003 has Chicago held the ugly title of Murder Capital (not per capita either), with the recent outburst of gun violence this past weekend in Chicago, it looks like they are in the running again for the title of Murder Capital in 2008.

      quoted article follows:

CHICAGO (WLS) -- At least 37 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend. Eight of the shootings were fatal.

Chicago police received dozens of 911 calls about the gun violence around the city this weekend. They acknowledge that 37 shootings is a big number for a three-day period.

Six people were hit in three separate shootings late Sunday night on the city's West Side.

At about 10:30 p.m., witnesses say a car pulled up to a group of men standing on the corner of 21st and California and someone inside the car started shooting. A 26-year-old construction worker was killed and two of his friends were wounded.

Mouth Sinai Hospital treated three gunshot victims, including a man and woman who pulled up to the emergency room in their bullet riddled minivan.

A 25-year-old man was shot and killed near Karlov and Polk.

Maria Bejar decided to move from the Little Village neighborhood after her brother was shot to death last year.

"Hopefully, law enforcement gets stronger and hopefully they work something out on, because it's ridiculous that I can't enjoy myself at night because I'm always worried about getting shot or killed," said Maria Bejar, Chicago resident.

Police superintendent Jody Weis continues to blame gangs for the ongoing violence.

"You have too many guns and too many guns and too much drugs on the street," said Jody Weis.

Stopping the violence is now becoming a priority as the weather begins to warm up.

"It's going to be a long summer. Parents better take responsibility for them," said Daley.

      Chicago's gangs

One gang expert in Chicago says that it is not just a matter of getting additional gun legislation, but also addressing the bigger problem of resolving poverty, especially in some of the most oppressed communities of the city. He said that one of the important things is to address these concerns, such as housing, displacement of residents. This displacement has, in his words, led to conflicts between gangs that used to be living in different areas. Now as they come together, conflict erupts over turf as these people try to compete for their business.

Criminologist and author John Hagedorn also went on to comparing the city of Chicago to the city of New York, which had one-third the homicide rate of Chicago last year. The reason for this, he said, is because the gangs are more entrenched here and therefore it is harder to fight

Wven though there has been a sharp decrease in homicides and other gun-related violence from 10 years ago, the fact remains Chicago last year had 443 homicides, New York had 496, but New York has three times the population, which effectively means Chicago has three times the murder rate.

Hagedorn says it goes back to the drug wars of the 1990s.

"In New York, nobody was really happy they were there and bringing the violence and so when the police cracked down, it broke the gangs up. Here, those same gangs have been there for 50 years," he said.

Hagedorn is the author of a book on gang culture. He says because the gangs are more entrenched here and less structured, they are harder to eradicate and he points to city housing policies which have weakened already poor neighborhoods.

"The housing needs to be improved. Lawndale used to be 120,000; now it's 40,000 people. Where are they? Nobody knows. We need to invest so that the people who live there have a reason to stay there," he said.

Hagedorn said if people are invested in the communities that they live in, they will no longer tolerate the gangs conducting their drug business there.

    • Football star gunned down by gang

It's especially sad since he was attracting scholarship attention from Stanford, Rutgers and other schools. He stayed out of trouble, did well despite his environment and look what happens.

What is there to do to crack down of gangs? The police can't catch them because the neighbors won't speak. What's your view on this. From my view, growing up in this, going to schools in neighborhoods like this, it's hard to say what it takes to keep people out of gangs. There's the underprivileged who become our valedictorians and then there's the underprivileged who join up in these dangerous and violent cliques. For me, I don't get it. What do you think?
