    • Forklift helps 700-lb man leave house

700-pound (310-kilogram) Manual Uribe, once considered the world's most obese person, left his home for the first time in five months on Sunday. Unlike most people, he did not just walk out of his front door, but required the help of a forklift and a platform truck to get some fresh air.

Uribe stayed on his specially designed bed, which was lifted onto the truck by a forklift. Uribe was then driven to the shore of a lake in northern Mexico, where he snacked on fish and vegetables. He also joked with a local boat operator: looking at the boatman's small craft, Uribe said, "Too bad I can't get on it; it would sink."

Once considered the world's fattest man when his weight hit over half a ton, more than two years of steady dieting had helped Uribe drop to about 700 pounds (310 kilograms) as of June; 550 pounds (250 kilograms) less than his former Guinness record weight of 1,235 pounds (560 kilograms).

Despite his drastic weight loss, Uribe is still unable to walk, and his last planned outing in March was aborted after the platform carrying his bed got stuck under an overpass.
His last successful trip outside his home was in March 2007, when six people pushed Uribe's wheel-equipped iron bed out to the street as a mariachi band played and a crowd gathered to greet him. Before that, he hadn't left his home in five years.

    • Table for 6,000? No problem - Syrian restaurant takes 'world's biggest&#...

The 6,012-seat Damascus Gate has taken the accolade from a Bangkok eatery serving a mere 5,000 diners. The crucial test for Guinness World Record officials is all the tables are properly catered for, and they likened the Syrian kitchen to a "mini-factory".

During the busy summer months up to 1,800 staff are employed in the 54,000 sq-m dining area and 2,500 sq-m kitchen.

Sounds like it would be easy to do a runner from...

    • Smurfs turn a deeper shade of blue

Croatian face paint makers must've been loving the new year after hundreds gathered in the town of Komin to paint themselves blue and put on silly hats in an attempt to beat a world record that, unbeknown to them, had already been broken.

After the Croatians had all arrived they contacted Guinness World Records to register their '395 smurfs in one place,' only to be told that they had missed the record as a group of English smurfs had already beaten the previous '290 smurfs in one place' record.

A spokesman for the organisers said: "We read on the internet that the record was 290 people held by a group of Americans, and decided to beat it, and we had TV, radio and print media report our success."

The Guiness World Record for the largest salad has been broken by the people of Moshav Sde Warburg (a small community in Israel) who prepared a tasty and healthy 10,260 Kg salad. The event, held on November 10th , 2007, was part of the 70th anniversary celebration of the founding of the moshav.

The salad was sold to participants and onlookers alike for 10 NIS per bowl, raising 100,000 NIS (over $25,000) to benefit Aleh Negev, a rehabilitative village for young adults suffering from severe physical and cognitive disabilities.

Major General (Res.) Doron Almog, Chairman of Aleh Negev was present to accept the donation and commended the residents, who had grown the lettuce and prepared the sald on the moshav. The volunteer effort to prepare the salad itself took all day and most of the residents participated ranging from many of the original founders of the moshav to young children.
