Cursor*10
It's a whole new year and we've got a fresh batch of Act Casual selections in the hopper, ready to distract you from workaday tribulations in the weeks ahead. 2008's first is Nekogames' nifty little puzzler, Cursor*10.
I'm hesitant to say much about Cursor*10, because I don't want to rob you of the fun that arises from figuring out how it works. Suffice it to say that it's short, there's a lot of pointing and clicking involved, and you probably haven't played anything quite like it.

A Letter to Bookstore Patrons Concerning Courtesy
Dear Stupid, Cheap, Small-Handed, Chimp-Faced, Simpletons,
I write you today to discuss one of the last few places that I actually enjoy shopping, the bookstore. Any multimillion dollar, built-in-a-day, same-across-America bookstore, where everything is brown, piano music is playing, and coffee shop is included.
Picture yours now for me. Is your local text peddler dancing vividly in your mind?
Good. Let's take a little mental tour, now, to a special little spot in the store. Dear Stupid, Cheap, Small-Handed, Chimp-Faced, Simpletons, ... more -
The Witcher
The Witcher is like Knights of the Old Republic, only with a story that demands the player make truly ambiguous moral decisions and live with the ramifications hours later. Its like Neverwinter Nights except the combat is fast, streamlined and not weighed down by a ponderous lists of spells. Its the Gothic series without all the bugs or awkward translations. The Witcher brings a lot to the table that we've seen before, but the end result is something unique. It's good, real good.
Based on a series of popular Polish fantasy novels, The Witcher follows Geralt, a sardonic wanderer whose past is long and bloody. You dont customize anything about him before you start the game, the scars on his face and his penchant for swords and magic are all set in stone. The man has walked many paths, but conveniently for those of us who havent kept up with popular Polish literature, he cant remember any of it. Rescued at the brink of death by his fellow Witchers, Geralt remembers the basics of sword fighting and sarcasm but little else.

Rock Band: Meet the new boss; Same as the old boss
Rock Band is an amazing game made impossibly more fun with a fully formed foursome of wannabe rock stars. I dont need to tell you that. You have already heard it from every corner of the World Wide Web, as fans and critics describe struggling through falsetto abominations of Bostons Brad Delp in Foreplay/Longtime or unleashing the otherworldly scream of adolescent rage that is Pete Townshend in Wont Get Fooled Again with infectious enthusiasm. You already understand that Drum Hero alone may be worth the price of admission, a nuanced article of play that perhaps makes you feel more like playing an actual instrument than the artificial guitar ever could. You know that Rock Band meets expectations, offering a playstyle that calls back the Guitar Hero series while introducing a new dynamic to the experience.
You do also know that you should own Rock Band, right? Rock Band is an amazing game made impossibly more fun with a fully formed foursome of wannabe rock stars. I dont need to tell you tha... more -
Elastic Thoughts: Trust
Maybe it's my old age talking, but I'm increasingly convinced that the more technologically aware we become, the more we are convinced that evil and trouble are lurking just around the corner. That the world is now small is an illusion of such staggering proportion that we seem to be forgetting the value of trust and faith in humanity in the communities we actually belong to. That we have begun to ascribe the sum total of actions in the global community to the potential action of our local environment is a festering hotbed for paranoia and despair. Maybe it's my old age talking, but I'm increasingly convinced that the more technologically aware we become, the more we are... more

Sam and Max Episode 201: Ice Station Santa
"He may be a mechanized engine of wanton destruction, but his taste in hideous middle-of-the-road pop music is impeccable!"-- Sam
Having just power-slammed the first season like a jalapeno jello-shooter, I was more than ready to take on the next case. Here's the scoop on Ice Station Santa, Freelance Police fans.
Santa has sends Max his Christmas present, but there are a couple of problems. For one thing, it's November. For another, it's a 3-story tall engine of destruction called Maimtron who is out to kill him and thrash the neighborhood. A flasback-inducing sequence of 80's pop references later, you put the poor thing out of your misery. Jump into the DeSoto and off to the North Pole to find out what the heck is going on. When you get there, things are definately not right. You are faced with the Soda Poppers and two bewildered elves trying to get Christmas off the ground after having most of their duties outsourced. But that's not the worst part. Their rotund boss has locked himself in his office howling, "The snow will turn red with the blood of the naughty!" while softening up the reception area with his Red-Ridder machine gun. Then it just gets weird. "He may be a mechanized engine of wanton destruction, but his taste in hideous middle-of-the-road pop music is impeccable!"-... more -
2007 Gaming Reference Guide
What a year! Honestly, this may be the best year for gaming that I've ever come across with just an absolute tidal wave of AAA content. At least two or three games that threaten to creep into the all-time best and an army of legitimate candidates for Game of the Year. I've played, enjoyed, and more importantly finished, more games in the past four months than perhaps the sum total of the previous twelve. Maybe more. It's really quite ridiculous.
It's completely understandable if you've basically forgotten ninety-five percent of what's been released this year, so we got together most of the GWJ writers to revisit their comments on some of the games of the year. Think of it as a 'buyer's guide' or a 'reference desk for the winter' or just a guilt trip about what's left on your 'stack of unloved games' for next year. We'll remind you what was good, what was great, what you may have forgotten about and what you should avoid as though it had a big biohazard sign on the front. What a year! Honestly, this may be the best year for gaming that I've ever come across with just an absolute tidal wave of AAA co... more -
A Gamer Gives Thanks
My fondest Thanksgiving memory goes like this:
Grandma's dinner table. Cloth napkins. I'm wearing a tie and blue corduroys that havent fit for at least a year. Brussel sprouts. Creamed spinach. My mother's white-line stare would put a long-haul trucker to shame.
Uncle Pete sits down at the table. Uncle Pete lives in a different world. Were strictly rural; he comes from mystery, traveling from city to city, living a life or urban wealth and sophistication of which I can only dream. An Outsider.
The table is awkward and silent, family tension pulled into a spider web of angst and future therapy.
Please pass the rolls. My fondest Thanksgiving memory goes like this: ... more -
Winterbells
It's winter. You are an adorable rabbit. Celestial bells begin to fall from the sky. What else could one do but begin to leap upon them, ascending higher and higher into the snowy arch of heaven?
