North Korean Merchant Vessel SoSan
Produced by a former member of the U.S. Naval intelligence community, this video is a frank look at an international incident involving the United States, North Korea, Yemen, and Spain. The Bush administration intercepted a secret shipment of WMD capable missiles making their way from North Korea to Yemen. This happened shortly after the U.S. invaded Iraq under the banner of eliminating WMD in the region. After holding onto the ship and her crew and cargo for a number of days, Bush chose to return the missiles to Yemen, despite the fact that Yemen is signatory to the NPT. Also fresh in the minds of the Americans at the time was the bombing of the USS Cole, which took place in Yemeni waters. Report: U.S. 'preparing the battlefield' in Iran
The Bush administration has launched a "significant escalation" of covert operations in Iran, sending U.S. commandos to spy on the country's nuclear facilities and undermine the Islamic republic's government, journalist Seymour Hersh said Sunday.
White House, CIA and State Department officials declined comment on Hersh's report, which appears in this week's issue of The New Yorker.
Hersh told CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer" that Congress has authorized up to $400 million to fund the secret campaign, which involves U.S. special operations troops and Iranian dissidents.
"They believe that their mission is to make sure that before they get out of office next year, either Iran is attacked or it stops its weapons program," Hersh said.
The new article, "Preparing the Battlefield," is the latest in a series of articles accusing the Bush administration of preparing for war with Iran. He based the report on accounts from current and former military, intelligence, and congressional sources.
Hersh said U.S. efforts were staged from Afghanistan, which also shares a border with Iran.
He said the program resulted in "a dramatic increase in kinetic events and chaos" inside Iran, including attacks by Kurdish separatists in the country's north and a May attack on a mosque in Shiraz that killed 13 people. Venezuela: Chávez tightens hold on intelligence
Hugo Chávez has used his decree powers to carry out a major overhaul of Venezuela’s intelligence agencies, provoking a fierce backlash here from human rights groups and legal scholars who say the measures will force citizens to inform on one another to avoid prison terms.
Under the new intelligence law, which took effect last week, Venezuela’s two main intelligence services, the DISIP secret police and the DIM military intelligence agency, will be replaced with new agencies, the General Intelligence Office and General Counterintelligence Office, under the control of Mr. Chávez.
The new law requires people in the country to comply with requests to assist the agencies, secret police or community activist groups loyal to Mr. Chávez. Refusal can result in prison terms of two to four years for most people and four to six years for government employees.
