Six Busted in China Milk Scandal
Six people have been arrested in connection with the tainted milk scandal in China, Reuters reports. The arrests were made in Hohhot, capital of China's main dairy producing region. Thousands of Chinese children have developed kidney problems from drinking milk formula contaminated by melamine. Four have died.
Last week authorities arrested 22 people in Hebei province suspected of being involved with producing melamine and selling it on to milk farms. The milk scandal triggered recalls and warnings among China's trading partners across Southeast Asia as melamine was discovered in infant formula, chocolate, cookies and other products. Melamine is used to artificially boost the protein content of milk and cheat on quality control tests. Melamine found in 18 more food products
Vietnam's health ministry has discovered the industrial chemical melamine in 18 food products imported from China and three other countries and has ordered them recalled and destroyed, officials said Friday.
Russian news agencies reported that food inspectors found nearly two tons of Chinese dry milk believed to be contaminated with melamine. And Philippines health officials found melamine in two of 30 milk products from China tested for the chemical.
Australian food regulators recalled China-made Kirin Milk Tea after tests in found the drink contained melamine. It is the fourth product withdrawn from the country's stores in the wake of China's tainted milk scandal.
Milk containing melamine has been blamed for killing four babies and sickening more than 54,000 with kidney stones and other illnesses in China. The contamination has sparked global concerns about food products made with Chinese milk or milk powder and recalls in several countries of Chinese-made products.
Chinese authorities believe suppliers trying to boost output diluted their milk, adding melamine because its nitrogen content can fool tests aimed at verifying protein content.
The tainted food has also spread to the U.S. where melamine has been found in Chinese-made White Rabbit Creamy Candy sold in California and Connecticut.
The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that trace amounts of melamine are safe in most foods, except for baby formula. A safety assessment by the agency concluded that 2.5 parts per million -- a tiny amount -- does not raise concerns. A week ago, the FDA warned consumers not to consume White Rabbit Candy and Mr. Brown coffee products because of possible melamine contamination. Muslim Children gassed at Dayton mosque after "Obsession" DVD hits Ohio
On Friday, September 26, the end of a week in which thousands of copies of Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West -- the fear-mongering, anti-Muslim documentary being distributed by the millions in swing states via DVDs inserted in major newspapers and through the U.S. mail -- were distributed by mail in Ohio, a "chemical irritant" was sprayed through a window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton, where 300 people were gathered for a Ramadan prayer service.
The room that the chemical was sprayed into was the room where babies and children were being kept while their mothers were engaged in prayers. On Friday, September 26, the end of a week in which thousands of copies of Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West -- the... more -

Monsanto expects Roundup to generate 1.8 billion in profits for 2008
That's a lot of poison in our rivers, streams, food, air and stomachs. Poison for profit. That should be their slogan. And why are these profits so high? Well, because they have bought up close to 90% of the global seed market thus forcing farmers to sign their bogus contracts holding them to buying their seeds and poison every year. They cannot save the seeds, and they have to buy the poison sprays with the seeds yearly. And the pesticides sprayed on crops made by these companies have also been found in higher levels in beehives, suggesting that it is possible that when bees have tried to pollinate GM crops they carry these pesticides back to the hives which makes them sick, thus causing them to desert the hives. Imagine what their seeds with built in pesticides can do for your salad!
And yet, the FDA states there is no difference between this poison and the conventional crops that farmers once grew and could regrow with saved seeds as has been the tradition in agriculture since ancient times. That way they also get out of responsibility from labelling the food you eat. That way you don't know the poisons you are consuming. And even if you are an organic farmer, chances are your crops have also been poisoned by their transgenic pollution. Even without selling you the seeds, you are a part of their big happy poison family.
Oh, and of course, these fake seeds with the poison centers are feeding the world! Don't pay attention to all of the starving people in Haiti, Africa, Asia and elsewhere. Don't let the real truth blind you to their propaganda... profit is good even at the expense of morality, truth, and this planet. That's the Monsanto way.

From the entry noted:
Monsanto positions itself as a green company.
"Using the tools of modern biology," its website informs us, "we help farmers grow more yield sustainably so they can produce more and conserve more."
Compare that twaddle to this bit from Monsanto's announcement on Tuesday:
[Monsanto's Chief Financial Officer Terry] Crews will indicate that Monsanto's Roundup® and other glyphosate-based herbicides business is on track to be above $1.9 billion of gross profit for the 2008 fiscal year, ahead of the previous forecast. Wow. Nearly $2 billion in profit, from Roundup alone. As recently as February, Monsanto was expecting to make $1.4 billion from its herbicide division this year. I guess farmers applied it even more copiously than expected.
But the company isn't just churning out profit by peddling weed-killer. Its seeds are doing pretty well, too -- particularly corn:
Crews will also note that for the 2008 fiscal year, the company's corn business should exceed $2 billion in gross-profit generation for the first time. Interesting. So it makes nearly as much on herbicide as it does on corn seeds. (Overall, the company expects to make $3.8 billion on seeds in '08).
Investors applauded Monsanto's announcement, sending shares up 7.5 percent Tuesday.
I wonder if they're being short-sighted. Monsanto's success rests on Roundup Ready technology -- selling seeds genetically engineered to withstand heavy doses of its flagship herbicide.
But Roundup-tolerant weeds (so-called "superweeds") are on the rise. Eventully, farmers will have to shift away from Roundup -- Monsanto's $1.8 billion cash cow.
Meanwhile, Bayer is rolling out a new line of herbicide-tolerant seeds, this one designed to withstand doses of Bayer's glufosinate herbicide. Ain't the agrichemical industry grand? That's a lot of poison in our rivers, streams, food, air and stomachs. Poison for profit. That should be their slogan. And why ar... more -
432 Babies sick from tainted milk powder
NOTE: THIS IS AVAILABLE IN ASIAN STORES IN THE UNTIED STATES. SO IT EFFECTS USA ALSO.
A Chinese state news agency has reported that nearly 430 babies are sick with kidney stones after ingesting contaminated milk powder.
A probe was launched in China yesterday after babies nationwide got sick after taking baby formula sold in stores. At that time China reported only a few babies were affected with kidney stones, but today a higher number of babies were reported to be sick after taking the contaminated milk powder.
The news agency reported that the Sanlu Group Co. has been ordered to stop production.
FDA also has released a warning notice even though the Chinese milk powders are not allowed to be sold here in the U.S. But the powder may still be available in Asian stores, so FDA has sent a warning not to buy the contaminated milk powders.
The FDA is advising caregivers not to feed infant formula manufactured in China to infants. This should be replaced with an appropriate infant formula manufactured in the United States as mentioned below. Individuals should contact their health care professional if they have questions regarding their infant’s health or if they note changes in their infant’s health status.
Kidney stones are rare in infants, so it is alarming to see a high number of them are affected by it. The FDA believes the infant formula may be contaminated with melamine. Melamine is added to inflate the protein profile of milk but also causes kidney stones. NOTE: THIS IS AVAILABLE IN ASIAN STORES IN THE UNTIED STATES. SO IT EFFECTS USA ALSO. ... more -

'Snake venom' anti-wrinkle cream?
Planet Skincare, an anti-wrinkle face cream that mimics the venom of an Asian snake, has become a best-seller.
The makers of the daily mosturiser say it "stuns" the skin in a similar way to a snake bite and gives "Botox-like results". The £60 anti-ageing cream went on sale last week in Selfridges and is said to be selling at the rate of 50 pots per day, becoming one of the London department store's most popular skincare lines. Even Gwyneth Paltrow is said to be a fan of the new product.
The cream incorporates a synthetic version of the poison from the Temple Viper, a distant cousin of the rattlesnake and indigenous to Malaysia. Amino acids in the venom block nerve signals telling the muscles to contract, helping to stop wrinkles forming. The active ingredient won the 2006 Swiss Technology Award.
Dr Aamer Khan, medical director of the Harley Street Medical Skin Clinic in London, said: "This could work for somebody who doesn;t want injections. The effects are not going to be as dramatic as with Botox. It will also need to be reapplied as the body gets rid of it quickly." Double Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup
Farmers receive subsidies to grow corn - much of this corn is sold to cola and other junk-food companies at a reduced rate. These companies then make high fructose corn syrup to sweeten their products. It is much cheaper to use than beet or cane sugar and can have serious negative effects on our bodies - especially the bodies of children. It's in just about any processed food you can name. As well as sweets and colas it is in bread, beer, fruit juices, frozen treats - read your labels. Chinese Regime Admits Poison Dumplings May Be From Manufacturer
The Chinese regime officially admitted for the first time the Chinese exported dumplings that has sicken many Japanese could have been deliberately poisoned inside the factory in China, according to Japan Broadcasting Corp (NHK) report on August 30.
This January, the frozen dumplings from China’s Tian Yang Food Corp sickened dozens in Japan. Lab testing showed those dumplings contained traces of pesticide contamination. The Chinese regime denied the possibility that those dumplings were poisoned inside China.
In July, the Japanese government was accused by the media of ignoring safety concerns because it avoided, at Beijing’s request, disclosing that people in China were also poisoned by the product from the same company for a month.

The Food Irradiation Plot
There's a new plot underway to sterilize your food and destroy the nutritional value of fresh produce. The players in this plot are the usual suspects: The USDA (which backed the "raw" almond sterilization rules now in effect in California) and the American Chemical Society -- a pro-chemical group that represents the interests of industrial chemical manufacturers. The latest push comes from USDA researchers who conducted a study to see which method more effectively killed bacteria on leafy green vegetables like spinach.
To conduct the study, they bathed the spinach in a solution contaminated with bacteria. Then, they tried to remove the bacteria using three methods: Washing, chemical spraying and irradiation. Not surprisingly, only the irradiation killed nearly 100 percent of the bacterial colonies. That's because radiation sterilizes both the bacteria and the vegetable leaves, effectively killing the plant and destroying much of its nutritional value while it kills the bacteria.
The USDA claims this is a huge success. By using radiation on all fresh produce, they claim, the number of food-borne illness outbreaks that happen each year could be substantially reduced. It all makes sense until you realize that by destroying the nutritional value of all fresh produce sold in the United States, an irradiation policy would greatly increase the number of people killed by infections and chronic diseases that are prevented by the natural medicines found in fresh produce! Toxic Chemicals Found in Laundry Products
A study of top-selling laundry products and air fresheners found the products emitted dozens of different chemicals. All six products tested gave off at least one chemical regulated as toxic or hazardous under federal laws, but none of those chemicals was listed on the product labels.
"I first got interested in this topic because people were telling me that the air fresheners in public restrooms and the scent from laundry products vented outdoors were making them sick," said Anne Steinemann, a University of Washington professor of civil and environmental engineering and of public affairs. "And I wanted to know, 'What's in these products that is causing these effects?'"
Manufacturers of consumer products are not required to disclose the ingredients, so Steinemann analyzed the products to discover their contents.
"I was surprised by both the number and the potential toxicity of the chemicals that were found," Steinemann said. Chemicals included acetone, the active ingredient in paint thinner and nail-polish remover; limonene, a molecule with a citrus scent; and acetaldehyde, chloromethane and 1,4-dioxane.
Nearly 100 volatile organic compounds were emitted from the six products, and none were listed on any product label, she said. Plus, five of the six products emitted one or more carcinogenic "hazardous air pollutants," which are considered by the Environmental Protection Agency to have no safe exposure level, Steinemann said.
The study is detailed online in today's issue of the journal Environmental Impact Assessment Review. A study of top-selling laundry products and air fresheners found the products emitted dozens of different chemicals. All six products ... more -
Make your home healthier in five easy steps - HEMP
When it comes time to buy new furniture, many experts feel it's worth a little extra effort to find PBDE-free options. Most products aren't labeled as such, so you'll have to ask questions at the store (or even call the manufacturer) to find out whether or not an item contains PBDEs. As a general rule, pieces made of natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and hemp don't catch fire easily or burn quickly, and so are less likely to be treated. Saskatchewan Farmer Tells of the Dangers of Bio-Tech Manipulation
Perhaps any other 77-year-old would simply retire and step back from a battle with a multi-million dollar agricultural company. Not Percy Schmeiser.
A keynote speaker at Canada's largest outdoor organics festival on July 5 and 6, Schmeiser cautioned listeners about the lure and hazards of genetically engineered (GE) crops.
The Saskatchewan farmer spoke at the Organic Islands Festival in Victoria before an audience well aware of his efforts and tribulations.
Schmeiser's regionally adapted canola, which he had researched for 50 years, became contaminated with airborne pollen from fields containing Roundup Ready, one of Monsanto's product lines.
He took Monsanto all the way to Canada's Supreme Court after the agro-chemical company sued him for using its product without purchasing it. Schmeiser claimed he had never used the product. The Supreme Court found in Monsanto's favor because their Roundup Ready canola was protected by a patent.
However, in an out-of-court settlement finalized in March, Monsanto agreed to pay all the clean-up costs of the Roundup Ready canola that contaminated Schmeiser's fields, and the court ruled that Monsanto can be sued again if contamination on his fields recurs.
Throughout the several court cases, Schmeiser stood firm in his belief that once GE organisms are released into the environment, there will be "no calling back" the genie.
Schmeiser says that selection and husbandry have been a cornerstone of agriculture since the first organized harvests. In the last 100 years, the use of science to modify the characteristics of a plant or animal has been instrumental in increased tonnage per hectare.
While the Green Revolution of the 1960s and '70s resulted in improved harvest levels, these results often came at the cost of substantial inputs of pesticides, herbicides, and oil-based technology.
In many countries, this proved a disastrous combination, impoverishing the soils, farmers, and whole countries, says Schmeiser.
Genetically modified crops need a significant increase in proprietary chemicals. Super-chemical Roundup, for example, is reported to be four times stronger today because of new active ingredients, he claims.
He adds that Agent Orange, known from the Vietnam War, is emerging as a component in new GE foods offered by some agro-chemical companies.

Herd of White Elephants Going Extinct
After high formaldehyde levels were found in travel trailers used to house the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the federal government said it would use them again only if it had no other choice.
Which raises the question — what should be done with the almost 100,000 trailers now sitting idly at sites around the country, at a cost to the government of $130 million a year?
It looks as though most could end up being sold for scrap.
FEMA has acknowledged that formaldehyde can be a health problem for people living in some trailers, but it has not said the same for people living near storage sites.
The agency says the ongoing litigation has stalled its efforts to dispose of the more than 94,000 travel trailers it now has sitting — empty and unused — around the country.
Taking care of the empty trailers costs money — $28 million a year, just in Mississippi.
FEMA had been selling the trailers but stopped last year because of the concerns about formaldehyde. After high formaldehyde levels were found in travel trailers used to house the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the federal government sa... more -
