Role Model

  • Public Topic: Everyone is invited to contribute to Role Model

    • I vote Sarah Palin as ideal role model for America's daughters!

I just want to state right here, right now that I believe Sarah Palin is not only more than qualified for the position of Vice President of the United States of America, but is also an EXCELLENT parental role model for all soccer moms and daughters to live up to.

The fact that she has had to endure the pressures of living on the border of the Soviet Union with Putin doing "fly-overs" over our magnificent state of Alaska, credit could only be given to Sarah Palin for keeping a watchful eye and Americans safe.

I've no doubt, given the opportunity, that while aerial hunting wildlife in Alaska, seeing Putin flying over, Palin would have taken aim and shot the leader of the USSR down and rid the world of that communist threat once and for all. I have no doubt at all pitbull / soccer mom wearing lipstick! More power to you WOMAN - you are strong!

You can not only bring home the bacon, you can shoot it and skin it alive, you can cook it up in a frying pan and make men cry.

I can only imagine the pride her daughters feel about their mom. It's refreshing to see her adolescent daughter being so mature, having babies and getting married and so forth. It's got to make Sarah proud and a testament to Sarah's parenting skills that her daughter is psychologically and emotionally advanced beyond her years. Just one more reason to Vote for Palin.

With the growing circle of so much love and support within the Palin family, I'm sure it won't be long before the Palin family girls bless us with more offspring - maybe even one of the boys.

My own daughter is only 8 years old, but I am so full of confidence in Sarah Palin's leadership, judgment and parenting skills that I am hoping (and encouraging) my own daughter to look to the example set by Sarah and her family for guidance and direction in her own life choices. I especially encourage my son to emulate the examples set by that first family of Alaska.

If my daughter has sex and conceives a child at say 14 or 15 years of age, I can rest easy that it isn't due to a lack of my parental guidance and discipline or that my daughter is emotionally deprived and neglected at home, but that my young daughter is emulating the fine example set forth by our Vice President, and dare I say, soon to be President of the United States.

Go Sarah Palin!!!!!! Down those "Rooskies" with brewskies Sarah Palin!!!!

      Note: heavy sarcasm.

    • The 11th Hour

The expression “the eleventh hour” means the last moment when change can happen to avert possible disaster. In the film The 11th Hour a variety of world experts explore how humanity has arrived at the current convergence of environmental crises while exploring steps that people can take to avert global disaster. In summary, the earth is nearing meltdown, beyond climate change. The process began with the Industrial Revolution, when people started mistakenly looking on nature as external to themselves and exploitable without limits. Forests have undergone major destruction. The ocean is becoming stagnant. Almost everywhere, the soil itself is largely damaged. In addition, 50,000 species a year are becoming extinct; no ecosystem can be identified as improving.

Humans suffer from increasing numbers of diseases caused by pollution. At fault is the overproduction of non-sustainable manufactures, immense waste and destruction, and an unsupportable population. The primary cause for much of the crisis is the fuels we use, petroleum being the primary one.

Through nature itself, the technology exists to solve some of these crises, and part of the solution is for people to live more consciously in harmony with nature as opposed to dominating it. According to the film, in a few years we will have reached the point of no return. We are not only at the eleventh hour, but at the last few seconds of that hour. Within this century, if nothing effective is achieved, planetary damage will be dramatic and total in every area. Although impossible to predict, extreme disaster could be quick once the balance is decisively tipped in the wrong direction, and it will happen everywhere.

The 11th Hour features leading experts from around the world, including former Soviet Prime Minister Mikhail Gorbachev, scientist Stephen Hawking, former head of the CIA James Woolsey, and sustainable design experts William McDonough and Bruce Mau, along with over 50 other scientists and world leaders who discuss the most important environmental issues facing the earth while presenting strategies to avert the crisis.

    • Bitter Divisions at Climate Talks

NUSA DUA, Indonesia — Amid growing frustration with the United States in deadlocked negotiations at a United Nations conference on global warming, the European Union threatened Thursday to boycott separate talks proposed by the Bush administration in Hawaii next month.

Humberto Rosa, the chief delegate from Portugal, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, said the talks to be hosted by the Bush Administration in Hawaii in January would be “meaningless” if there was no deal this week here at the conference on the resort island of Bali.

“If we do not act now, climate change will increase the number of hungry people in the world,” said Jacques Diouf, director general of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, who is in Bali this week.

      Gore on America:
“Over the next two years the United States is going to be somewhere it is not now,” Mr. Gore said to loud applause. “You must anticipate that.”

    • Brad Pitt Commissions Designs for New Orleans

The project, called Make It Right, calls for building 150 affordable, environmentally sound houses over the next two years. In a telephone interview from New Orleans, where he plans to present the designs today, Mr. Pitt said the residents of the neighborhood had been homeless long enough. “They’re coming up on their third Christmas,” he said.

Mr. Pitt is asking foundations, corporations and individuals to contribute to the project by adopting one house, several houses or a portion of a house through the project Web site, makeitrightnola.org. “You can adopt a tankless water heater or a solar panel or a tree or a low-flush toilet,” Mr. Pitt said. “You can give it to someone for Christmas,” he said — instead of another sweater.

Responding to critics who question the wisdom of rebuilding at all in an area likely to get hit again, Mr. Pitt said: “My first answer to that is, talk to the people who’ve lived there and have raised their kids there. People are needing to get back in their homes.”

    • RIP Lucky Dube / Different Colours - One People

Lucky Dube has been hailed as 'The shining star of African reggae and 'South Africa's biggest selling contemporary artist'. However, he isn't merely this, he's a modern day hero with a message that has touched millions of people's hearts around the world. With an incredible 21 albums under his musical belt, he has proved himself one of not only South Africa's, but also the world's greatest reggae superstars. A man with superb musical taste and genuis, an artist with a message, with a reason and a rhyme behind everything he does.

As one can judge by listening to his music, he has a message on every album. His songs are based on three main things - political issues, social issues and personal issues - things that play an important role in everyone's lives. When asked what inspires him (Lucky), he humbly notes - 'People! Looking at people, watching people's movements, the things they do. My songs are based on real life situations and experiences.'

From the release of his first reggae album in 1984, to his present superstar status today, Lucky has maintained the humble nature that brings him closer to the people that so inspire his music. He has toured the world more times over than anyone could dream of and shared stages with names such as Maxi Priest, Sinead O-Connor, Peter Gabriel, Michael Jackson, Seal, Ziggy Marley, Celine Dion, Sting and many, many others. He has raked in over 20 local and international awards for his music and videos, yet as a person he is unaffected by his success. Still living in the country that gave him birth, he records with his original sound engineer and belongs to the same record comany. A true gentleman, Lucky's down-to-earth nature is one of his finest qualities.

His music is riddled with the desire to make the world a better place.

Massive hits such as Taxman, Prisoner, The Way It Is, Victims, Trinity and many others have catapulted him into the homes and hearts of people all over the world. He sees through the ridiculous, the injustices, the everyday problems we all have to deal with as human beings, and slices through to the heart of it. His incredible repertoire is a cornucopia of mixed emotions, questioning attitudes and a simple love of a good melody and a good vibe.

      AN EVENING WITH NOAM CHOMSKY

      The New War Against Terror

      October 18, 2001 - Transcribed from audio
recorded at The Technology & Culture Forum at MIT

      Audio> http://web.mit.edu/tac/www/chomsky-18oct01-16k.ram <Audio

Everyone knows it’s the TV people who run the world [crowd laugher]. I just got orders that I’m supposed to be here, not there. Well the last talk I gave at this forum was on a light pleasant topic. It was about how humans are an endangered species and given the nature of their institutions they are likely to destroy themselves in a fairly short time. So this time there is a little relief and we have a pleasant topic instead, the new war on terror. Unfortunately, the world keeps coming up with things that make it more and more horrible as we proceed.

Assume 2 Conditions for this Talk

I’m going to assume 2 conditions for this talk.

      * The first one is just what I assume to be recognition of fact. That is that the events of September 11 were a horrendous atrocity probably the most devastating instant human toll of any crime in history, outside of war.
      * The second assumption has to do with the goals. I’m assuming that our goal is that we are interested in reducing the likelihood of such crimes whether they are against us or against someone else.

If you don’t accept those two assumptions, then what I say will not be addressed to you. If we do accept them, then a number of questions arise, closely related ones, which merit a good deal of thought.

      The 5 Questions

      1. What’s Happening Right Now?

--Starvation of 3 to 4 Million People
      --Silent Genocide

      2. Why was it a Historic Event?

      3. What is the War Against Terrorism?

      4. What are the Origins of the September 11 Crime?

      5. What are the Policy Options?

    • Tracy Chapman - New Beginning

'Tracy Chapman'' won three Grammys and catapulted the studious young woman (who recalls taking ''every ethno-musicology course that was available'' at Tufts, including West African drumming and Japanese classical music, and who was for a time considering a graduate degree) onto a decidedly uncontemplative treadmill of touring and recording. Not surprisingly, songs on subsequent albums -- ''Crossroads,'' ''Matters of the Heart'' and ''New Beginning'' -- began to show the strain of what she describes as ''not having a moment to sit and play without any particular goal in mind.'' Rhetoric became a substitute for the focused demands of storytelling.

Nowhere, however, is Ms. Chapman's concern for precision more noticeable than on ''Telling Stories,'' her first recording in five years. ''There was pressure,'' she admits, to return to the studio sooner, but she resisted -- wisely, it appears. Indeed, if albums were dresses, then the difference between 1995's ''New Beginning'' and this one could be described as the difference between a gauzy patchwork jumper and a couture sheath. On the earlier album, her generally spare melodies were draped with colorful swaths of instrumentation -- cello, Scottish small-pipes, multiple keyboards. Lyrics, too, tended to the loose and flowing. And not even a singer as warmly empathetic as Ms. Chapman could make a line like ''we create the pain and the suffering and the beauty in this world'' lose its didactic edge.

    • Motorhead Messiah / Fuel Efficient Cars - Biodiesel - Hybrids

?Check it out. It's actually a jet engine," says Johnathan Goodwin, with a low whistle. "This thing is gonna be even cooler than I thought." We're hunched on the floor of Goodwin's gleaming workshop in Wichita, Kansas, surrounded by the shards of a wooden packing crate. Inside the wreckage sits his latest toy--a 1985-issue turbine engine originally designed for the military. It can spin at a blistering 60,000 rpm and burn almost any fuel. And Goodwin has some startling plans for this esoteric piece of hardware: He's going to use it to create the most fuel-efficient Hummer in history.

Goodwin, a 37-year-old who looks like Kevin Costner with better hair, is a professional car hacker. The spic-and-span shop is filled with eight monstrous trucks and cars--Hummers, Yukon XLs, Jeeps--in various states of undress. His four tattooed, twentysomething grease monkeys crawl all over them with wrenches and welding torches.
Johnathan Goodwin is a 37-year-old professional car hacker out of Kansas that's making a name for himself by taking muscle cars and doubling their horsepower, and at the same time quadrupling their mileage and cutting emissions by 80 percent.

His latest project: creating a super-efficient electric hybrid Hummer H3 by putting in an electric motor plus a military-grade 60,000 rpm turbine modified to run on biodiesel, doubling horsepower from 300 to 600, getting 60 miles per gallon, and doing zero to 60 in five seconds. It'll also have a hydrogen-injection system that will cut the already low emissions by half.

He's currently converting a 1987 Jeep Wagoneer to biodiesel for Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a 1960 Lincoln Continental into a biodiesel-electric hybrid for Neil Young.

Ten days before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, lead vocalist Natalie Maines publicly criticized U.S. President George W. Bush. The ensuing controversy cost the group half of their concert audience attendance in the United States as chronicled in the 2006 documentary Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing.

At the 49th Grammy Awards Show in 2007, 'the Chicks' - as they are informally known - won all five categories for which they were nominated, including the coveted Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year, in a vote that Maines interpreted as being a show of public support for their advocacy of free speech.

    • Give Peace A Chance - John Lennon

"Give Peace a Chance" is a song written by John Lennon and originally credited to Lennon-McCartney (John Lennon and Paul McCartney). However, when Lennon's posthumous live album with Elephant's Memory, Live in New York City (recorded in 1972), was reissued in the 1990s, "Give Peace a Chance" was credited solely to Lennon. End credits of the 2006 documentary The U.S. vs. John Lennon (in which the song appears) also list John Lennon as the sole writer of this song.

Early in the Bed-In, a reporter asked John what he was trying to do. John said, "All we are saying is give peace a chance," spontaneously, but he liked the phrase and set it to music for the song. He sang the song several times during the Bed-In, and finally, on 1 June 1969, rented an 8-track tape machine from a local music store and recorded it in bed.
