New York Mets fire manager Willie Randolph
Willie Randolph is out as manager of the New York Mets, fired 21/2 months into a disappointing season that has followed the team's colossal collapse last September.
Bench coach Jerry Manuel takes over on an interim basis for Randolph, who led the Mets to within one win of the 2006 World Series. They got off to a strong start again last year but plummeted down the stretch and have been unable to rebound.
A preseason favorite to win the NL pennant, the $138 million Mets (34-35) had won two in a row when Randolph was let go early Tuesday morning -- making him the first major league manager to get fired this season.
Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto also were fired in an enormous overhaul that came at a stunning time -- about two hours after New York's 9-6 victory at the Los Angeles Angels. Willie Randolph, Mets manager is FIRED!
It had to happen but the Mets chose a horrible way to do it. They made Randolph fly out to California with the team anyway. They won their game in convincing fashion and then they fired him in the wee hours of the morning after the WIN. A news release came out at 3:15 announcing it. Unbelievable!!! Yankees Cursed this Season?
A devilish Boston fan working on a concrete crew at the new $1.3 billion Yankee Stadium covertly buried a Red Sox T-shirt under what will become the visiting team's locker room to jinx the Yanks.
The culprit is a mason - born and raised in the Country Club section of southeast Bronx.
"As I stuck it in, I said, 'The Yankees are done for the next 30 years.' I only put a 30-year curse because I'm 46 and in 30 years I'll be dead, and I won't care if the Yankees win then," said "Gino," who spoke from a construction job in Manhattan. Final Opening Day at Shea Stadium gets Rickrolled and subsequently booed...
An online contest to choose a new singalong song at Mets home games attracted thousands of pranksters who flooded the team's Web site to vote for a Rick Astley tune.
The glory that will go with the last ever opening day at Shea Stadium went with a blast... or ∫"Never gonna give you up... never gonna let you down..."∫
http://blogs.trb.com/sports/baseball/mets/blog/
Give the Mets credit for playing it, too, although the public address announcer essentially explained how they got punked. He told the 56,000 people here they were "Rick-rolled."

The New York Mets refuse to get Rick Rolled
In a shameful move the New York Mets have decided to opt against playing Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” the clear winner in their online fan vote to determine what song would replace Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” as the new eighth-inning sing-along tune.
The Rick Astley song “Never Gonna Give You Up” received over 5 million fan votes from sites like Digg.com and won by an overwhelming margin but as NY Daily News reporter Adam Rubin says The Mets didn’t care about your vote.
“Rather than commit to that as the new eighth-inning song since it probably doesn’t reflect the fan base’s wishes, the Mets will play the top six selections once apiece during the first six games of their home stand. The one that draws the largest crowd response will stick.
If you would like to protest The Mets terrible terrible terrible PR decision to deny Rick Astley and our worthy internet votes you can contact:

Pedro Martinez wants all you doubters to know that he dominated and he did it clea...
Yes... with everyone doubting the accomplishments of everyone in baseball following the Clemens and Bonds hooplah, Pedro has announced that he did it clean.
He won three Cy Young Awards...
He truly did dominate, and we should laud his accomplishments,
Not everyone can win 3 Cy Youngs, a World Series, and throw Don Zimmer in their career.
AND he carries a midget in his entourage!!
I know many who see a baseball posting on here, jump out to be total "haters..."
But Pedro is a true role model...
"I have a small frame and when I hurt all I could do was take a couple of Aleve or Advil, a cup of coffee and a little mango and an egg -- and let it go!"
Typing this was painful, I will go take my Aleve-Advil-coffee-mango-egg power shake... Yes... with everyone doubting the accomplishments of everyone in baseball following the Clemens and Bonds hooplah, Pedro has announced... more -

Is the new Citi Field honoring the Brooklyn Dodgers more than it is the Mets?
Shea Stadium was notorious for being one of the eyesores of baseball architecture.
But there is a lot of history with that goofy big apple rising up, the worst bleacher situation in all of all baseball and did I mention Shea was an eyesore?
But is it right that Citi Field design-wise honors the Dodgers more so than the Mets?
(They probably honor the old Dodger legacy more than the actual Dodgers franchise does- we have dense post-O'Malley ownerships to thank for that)
The Mets were a franchise awarded to New York after the Dodgers and Giants bolted for the west.
But the thing was, the Giants were Manhattan's gem, and the Dodgers were Brooklyn's but too close to the Bronx.
Queens/Long Island thus became Mets territory... Shea Stadium was notorious for being one of the eyesores of baseball architecture. ... more -
