    • Anniversary of Milošević Ousting

Opinions on the importance of this anniversary differ – some see it as the key event in Serbia's recent history, while others believe the changes had been much less significant than seemed at first.

"Citizens need to remember what Serbia looked like. This was a mass revolt through which Serbia for the most part redeemed itself for backing Slobodan Milošević in the 1900s," Korać believes. But he added that such an event always creates hopes, while people feel somewhat disappointed afterwards.

"I would add that a huge blow to this Serbia was the murder of Zoran Đinđić." Korać also said that he believes "Milošević would still be in power", if the protest eight years ago never took place.

Meantime, one of the men hailed as heroes of October 5, New Serbia leader Velimir Ilić, believes the changes have been merely cosmetic. He commented on the recent inclusion in the cabinet of the Socialists (SRS), a party Milošević founded and led until his death, by saying, "now we're not sure who has beaten whom on October 5, both are in the government. It's all the same, only Sloba is missing".

The Liberal-Democrats (LDP) have announced they will mark the anniversary today with a campaign dubbed, "I won't give October 5". The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), meanwhile, will honor Jadranka Jovanković, the demonstration's victim, with a ceremony in Belgrade.

Have things changed? Or is it merely a front? I suppose its up for each to decide.

It certainly would help things out if they'd finally turn Mladić in!

    • Karadzic backers riot in Belgrade

Supporters of Radovan Karadzic clashed with police Tuesday after his arrest on war crimes charges. His lawyer plans to appeal against his extradition to The Hague. Meanwhile, a German politician said Serbia's EU accession is still a long way off.

Some 250 supporters of war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic attacked police in Belgrade on Tuesday evening in protest at his arrest, hurling bottles and chairs and chanting "Treason!"

Five demonstrators and a policeman were injured, doctors at a Belgrade hospital said, and several protesters were arrested. Most of the demonstrators were members of the extremist Obaz group.

Politicians across Europe hailed the arrest of the former Bosnian Serb leader accused of genocide during the Bosnian war and said the move had brought Serbia closer to joining the European Union. But the conservative governor of the German state of Bavaria, Günther Beckstein, warned the EU against taking "overhasty steps" regarding Serbia's accession.

    • Armed attack at Kosovo PM's home

Security guards at the home of Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci have exchanged fire with at least one intruder, police in Pristina say.

Police said one person was seen trying to enter the house and shooting broke out when the intruder was challenged. Mr Thaci was not at home at the time, but his wife and son were present but unhurt.

The deputy prime minister condemned the incident as an "attack against the rule of law in Kosovo". The attackers escaped but at least one was believed to have been injured as traces of blood were found.

Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority declared independence from Serbia in February, but Belgrade, backed by Moscow, has vehemently opposed the move. Relations between ethnic Albanian parties in Kosovo have also been plagued by tensions and rivalry.
