FedEx, voter group hope to ease ballot shipping woes
Geting our ballots back in time to be counted is a major concern of US voters overseas especially when we receive our ballots just two days before the election! Although this new initiative by OVF and FedExExpress won't be able to help us if our ballot arrives the day of the election or later :-( -- which unfortunately does happen sometimes -- it will surely be a help to many of us to return our ballots back in time to be counted this November. For sure, it's a step in the right direction.

Obama to visit West Bank, Palestinian official says
JERUSALEM - Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama will be visiting the Palestinian Authority president in the West Bank next week, a Palestinian government official said Monday.
Obama will be meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on July 23, Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said.
Obama is expected to visit Israel, but officials could not yet confirm what his plans are there. Erakat was in Paris, France, where Abbas had been attending a summit.
The Obama campaign had no comment on the report.
Abbas held talks Sunday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy ahead of a sweeping summit launching the Union for the Mediterranean, bringing together leaders of more than 40 nations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Erakat said Israeli and Palestinian officials would review the status of negotiations on the sidelines of the Paris summit, discussing Israeli settlement activity, the Gaza border and Palestinian prisoner releases. Obama to deliver nomination speech directly to the public
This August, during the final day of the Democratic National Convention, Presidential favorite Barack Obama will symbolically leave his scheduled place at the podium, routinely used to address the party's delegates, to deliver his official acceptance speech outside, in the open air, directly to the public.
Typically, Presidential nominees formally accept the nomination in the same setting we have all seen on TV - amid a sea of balloons, posters, and cheering fans. However, these "fans" are not the general public; they are primarily the delegates, political elites chosen to represent the fifty states, handpicked for their unwavering support of the party itself. This carefully scripted event rarely has many surprises, with speeches, agendas, platforms, and nominations all worked out months before.
I found a surprise waiting in my Gmail inbox today. This form letter, sent today to every registered member of my.BarackObama.com, proclaims that the candidate will break from tradition, and address his acceptance speech directly to the American public:

I wanted you to be the first to hear the news.
At the Democratic National Convention next month, we're going to kick off the general election with an event that opens up the political process the same way we've opened it up throughout this campaign.
Barack has made it clear that this is your convention, not his.
On Thursday, August 28th, he's scheduled to formally accept the Democratic nomination in a speech at the convention hall in front of the assembled delegates.

After being turned away from the doors of the Democratic National Convention in 2004, (held in my home town of Boston, MA) I became frustrated with the message these conventions send, that only those who had financially supported the party were important enough to be addressed by the candidate himself. Whereas the majority of voters, in the past, have neither the political access nor the desire to spend multiple hundreds of dollars on a ticket to the convention, Obama's decision to hold his acceptance speech outside will allow tens of thousands more to hear the candidate in person, for free. While this exciting event is primarily a symbolic gesture, it is an extension of a message central to his campaign - to change the American political process which has become so profoundly routine.

Third voting machine for Florida
Three different elections and three different voting methods, as Florida still sorts out the 2000 debacle that put George Bush in power.
First there was the hanging chad. Then there was a touch screen system that did not produce a paper trail and was riddled with bugs. This time they are using a paper ballot that voters fill in a bubble and pass to an election worker who scans it into a computerized machine.
Florida is concerned if they can handle the new system. Some predict an 80% turnout and election officials don't know if they can handle that much paper in such a short amount of time.
