TRIPs v. Human Rights
Using a system of objectives and rules formalized into agreements, the World Trade Organization (WTO) regulates international trade among the governments of member countries. In 1994, the WTO introduced the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) Agreement. This agreement established international patent laws and obligated member countries to adopt the United States’ intellectual property policies, which include twenty years of exclusivity for patented medicines.
Because the exclusivity granted by patents creates a monopoly, the application of TRIPs standards to developing and developed countries alike prevents developing countries from providing affordable medicines to patients. For this reason, the TRIPs Agreement has become a growing source of tension in international economic relations between the developed nations of the Global North and the developing nations of the Global South.
A pragmatic defense of international patent laws is that of economic fairness. Indeed the major objection to the Global South’s position comes from the pharmaceutical industry’s trade association, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), saying investments in the research and development of medicines require “incentives.”
At the root of this debate stems a fundamental disagreement—the Global North defends intellectual property as a right to property, while the Global South argues that it is simply a question of economic policy. In August 2000, the UN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights adopted a resolution declaring that apparent conflicts exist between the TRIPs standards and human rights. Since the adoption of the resolution, the differing views of the Global North and Global South have stressed two competing values—property rights and human rights.
In response to the UN resolution, the 2001 Doha Declaration set forth new international patent standards by promising that the TRIPs Agreement does not and should not prevent WTO member countries from protecting public health, and that it can and should be interpreted and implemented in a manner supportive of member countries’ rights to protect public health and to promote universal access to medicines. The declaration has been hailed as a rare chance to raise the standard of living of millions; however, the declaration has yet to be adhered to by developed nations.
Meanwhile, two fundamental problems affecting developing nations remain unresolved —access and innovation. Patents make medicines unaffordable and inaccessible. Furthermore, patents do not stimulate innovation of medicines needed to treat patients with diseases that predominately affect developing countries.
To reconcile this problem, I propose that we demand global trade systems that more accurately represent and address the disease burden of the majority. Rather than applying the same standards to all countries and industries, despite factual differences in intellectual property laws and other areas of development, the WTO and international patent laws should reflect these differences by prioritizing research and development according to the need of the global disease burden and increasing access to affordable medicines where they are needed most.
We have the technology to treat health as a human right and we should. Our global society cannot continue treating health as just another commodity in the world economy. Policies regarding intellectual property, innovation and public health should be evaluated according to their contribution to the protection, fulfillment and realization of a universal right to health.
Can our current global patent system achieve access and innovation for those that need it most?

David Cameron: shape up, fatties!
Earlier this week David Cameron declared it was time for an end to 'moral neutrality'. If people are fat and poor, they should simply be told that they're fat and poor, and its all their fault, and they should sort themselves out, and they definitely can't blame it on the government.
Tis a fair point, in a sense - but at the same time, government has a reponsibility to react to society as it changes, and if we're all getting beefier because our entire cultural landscape has altered (we're so busy working to pay the bills that we don't prioritise eating healthily, and communities have been so decimated that we don't actually go outside to exercise, and therefore fighting fatness and poverty seems like a losing battle, for example) then that should be acknowledged, at least. Right? Or wrong?
Here the delightful (and delightfully rotund, she reckons) Arabella Weir speaks up for the fatties and, er 'poories' amongst us, and addresses the social and economic issues dear David seems to be forgetting...
David: "We talk about people being 'at risk of obesity' instead of talking about people who eat too much and take too little exercise."
Arabella: "Of course you're bleeding well 'at risk' if you come from the socio-economic group most likely to eat badly as a result of being less well versed in good eating habits and with the least access to shops selling quality food at reasonable prices."
Ha! I know who my money's on in this particular battle. And yet the Tories are ever popular... Come election time, be afraid. Be very afraid.

Do you think churches should be taxed?
I do. They lobby and spend money on real estate, spend money on advertisements, and some of the megachurch preachers have million dollar homes. At the bottom of this link the poster says that they believe the churches should pay taxes proportional to the good they do.
Benny Hinn, a TV preacher who runs the World Healing Center Church in Grapevine, Texas. Hinn, who travels the globe conducting faith-healing revivals, lives in a seven-bathroom, eight-bedroom mansion overlooking the Pacific Ocean valued at $10 million. It is claimed as a parsonage.
The Rev. Creflo Dollar's World Changers Church International in College Park, Ga. Dollar drives a Rolls Royce and has large homes in Georgia and New York. He is asked to provide a list of all vehicles provided for himself, his wife, board members and ministry employees.
Paula and Randy White's Without Walls International Church in Tampa, Fla. In a letter to the ministry, Grassley asks the couple to provide a list of expense account items "including, but not limited to, clothing expenses and any cosmetic surgery for years 2004 to present."
Joyce Meyer Ministries in Fenton, Mo. Grassley asks Meyer and her husband David to explain expenditures like a $23,000 commode with a marble top, a $30,000 conference table, an $11,000 French clock and a $19,000 pair of vases for the ministry headquarters.

Carbon Neutral: CHECK, Net Neutral: CHECK, Water Neutral ... HUH?
The global-warming debate has introduced some new catchphrases into the business lexicon. Becoming carbon neutral, for example, is now a goal for multinationals like Dell, HSBC and Tesco. But for another well-known international brand, becoming carbon neutral isn't enough. Last June, Coca-Cola CEO Neville Isdell flew to Beijing and pledged that his company would become "water neutral" — every drop of water it uses to produce beverages would be returned to the earth or compensated for through conservation and recycling programs. "Water is the main ingredient in nearly every beverage that we make," Isdell said. "Without access to safe water supply, our business simply cannot exist."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some will say that it's still not enough, but I thought it was interesting to see what one major global corporation is doing (or at least thinking of doing) to minimize its impact on the environment ... partly in response to social pressures, but partly because they know that it's in their best financial interests in the long term as well. 9/11 truth - Media responsibility
The failure of the American media [to do it's job in regards to 9/11] has been admitted by some insiders. For example, Rena Golden, executive vice-president and general manager of CNN International, was quoted as saying in August of 2002 that the American press had censored itself on both 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan. "Anyone who claims the US media did censor itself," Golden added, "is kidding you. And this isn't just a CNN issue - every journalist who was in any way involved in 9/11 is partly responsible." As to why this has been the case, CBS anchorman Dan Rather has said:
"There was a time in South Africa that people would put flaming tires around people's necks if they dissented. And in some ways the fear is that you will be necklaced here, and you will have a flaming tire of lack of patriotism put around your neck. Now it is the fear that keeps journalists from asking the toughest of the tough questions."
Rather's confession surely explains at least part of the press's reticence to question the official account, especially since journalists perceived as unpatriotic are in danger of being fired.
One of the chief critics of the official account, Thierry Meyssan, suggests that Americans have viewed any criticism of the official account to be not only unpatriotic but even sacrilegious.
On September 12 [2001], Meyssan reminds us, President Bush announced his intention to lead "a monumental struggle of Good versus Evil."
On September 13, he declared that the next day would be a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks.
On September 14, George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States issued a declaration of war from a cathedral. He was surrounded by Billy Graham, a cardinal, a rabbi, and an imam as well as four previous presidents and many members of Congress. GWBush delivered the sermon. in the Sermon, he said:
"Our responsibility to history is already clear: to answer these attacks and rid the world of evil. War has been waged against us by stealth and deceit and murder. This nation is peaceful, but fierce when stirred to anger...In every generation, the world has produced enemies of human freedom. They have attacked America, because we are freedom's home and defender. AND THE COMMITMENT OF OUR FATHERS is now the calling of our time....[W]e ask almighty God to watch over our nation, and grant us patience and resolve in all that is to come.... And may He always guide our country. God bless America."
An unprecedented declaration of war from a cathedral.
Meyssan observes, "the American government consecrated...it's version of events. From then on, any questioning of the official truth would be seen as sacrilege."
Al Gore's New Slideshow At TED
With Earth Day coming up next week, it is time for us to bring a new optimism into what we do, how we think, and how we inspire others regarding our planet and in solving the climate crisis. Al Gore brings a refreshing new look to this crisis and the opportunity we have as the generation with the challenge of solving it with his TED talk. I want my child to ask the question in years to come: how did you find the moral fortitude to solve this crisis and leave future generations with a sustainable planet. Clinton Statement On NY Airspace Czar Appointment
On April 8, 2008 presidential contender Hillary Rodham Clinton's statement regarding the appointment of Director Kennington-Gardinera included directing the new NY airspace czar to include the environmental impacts on residential communities in any criteria to address the metro area's congestion and delays (see below).
The New Jersey Coalition Against Aircraft Noise (NJCAAN) appreciates Clinton's statement that includes consideration regarding the health impacts generated by the aviation industry in the metro area. One clear way to address delays would be to utilize the restricted offshore military airspace for commercial aircraft. The military utilizes this airspace for training purposes. The unintended consequence is to force more commercial aircraft over residential communities.
Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton Regarding the Appointment of
the Director for the Federal Aviation Administration's New York Integration Office
"I am pleased that the FAA has finally taken action to appoint someone who can take a comprehensive look at the problems with our airspace. I certainly hope that Director Kennington-Gardinera will immediately begin the critical task of evaluating congestion at every step of the flight process, including the impact of flights over residential areas. While we must take action immediately to end the problems that plague our airports and airspace, any plans moving forward must also consider the quality of life for those people living in current and proposed flight paths. This is a quality of life issue for travelers as well as residents and this is our best chance to make sure everyone's concerns are heard."
Late last year, Senator Clinton joined her colleagues in the New York and New Jersey congressional delegation in calling for the appointment of an "airspace czar" to evaluate congestion at every step of the flight process - from tower control, to the TRACON, to the routing center.
Porn for the blind?
In a world full of hi-res images and mammouth sized screens, have you ever taken a minute to think about the visually impaired?
Well, Porn for the Blind, a nonprofit organisation based in Cambridge, Mass. has done just that. Establishing itself for the sole purpose of making the millions of free porn clips available online accessible to people with visual impairments, volunteer 'audiodescribers' watch porn preview videos and describe the action.
The site was initially slow to take off with only 14 audio descriptions uploaded, but after a little press attention the site streamed more than 40GB to more than 50,000 visitors.
According to Regina Lynn, "there's something hot about the absolute amateur quality of the submissions, just like a homemade snapshot capturing real sexual energy can have more impact than a studio photograph of a professional model."
Something's Gotta Give
As a Canadian living in the U.S., I've always been shocked at the health care system - or lack thereof - in this country. Services for the poor are practically non-existent, and even those with full-time jobs often find their monthly premiums too expensive to carry. Those who are "fully covered" (is there even such a thing?) often find themselves mired in medical bills and "deductibles" in the thousands of dollars, for simple check-ups or lab tests.
Something has to change! Social services are a right, not a privilege.
Lawmaker wants you to show yourself
One of the great things about the internet is to be able to post on forums or leave comments somewhere yet remain completely anonymous. Well if one Kentucky lawmaker has his way, anonymous internet postings may be going the way of the buffalo.
Representative Tim Couch filed a bill this week to make anonymous posting online illegal. The bill would require anyone who contributes to a website to register their real name, address and e-mail address with that site. Their full name would be used anytime a comment is posted.
If the bill becomes law, the website operator would have to pay if someone was allowed to post anonymously on their site. The fine would be five-hundred dollars for a first offense and one-thousand dollars for each offense after that.
He says it will cut down on online bullying...but c'mon, isn't that half the fun of posting online? One of the great things about the internet is to be able to post on forums or leave comments somewhere yet remain completely anonymous... more
