    • Al Gore:Climate Crisis Getting Short Shrift In U.S. President Race

Nobel Laureate Al Gore is absolutely correct in this assessment. The most crucial crisis of this generation gets little to no attention in this horserace even with the scientific reports regarding the urgency of addressing it now. Even with The Inconvenient Truth laid out before us. Why is it that so many still consider this to be so unimportant? Because it isn't sexy enough as a topic? Because they are just uninformed about it? Because they are just too comfortable to care? Because they are afraid of change? Because it calls upon reallly standing up to the status quo that all the candidates still answer to in one way or another? On the climate crisis they all have to do much better because none of their plans meet this crisis as it should be met. Perhaps we will see more talk about this once the coronation takes place in each party but if not, it will be up to us to make sure it is covered. The question then is will we demand it be covered?

To me it is also truly a shame that this country has such a distinquished Nobel Peace Prize winner in Al Gore and his words fall on so many deaf ears in this campaign simply because he is no longer considered part of "the game." I truly hope we as a people and a species don't live to regret that. I have signed petitions, wrote the candidates, and spoken out about this crisis being given the attention it must have because it does directly relate to healthcare, economy, environment, war and peace, poverty, social ills, democracy, and our very survival. If we aren't willing to stand up for our planet now how will we ever have the courage to stand up for this country? Thanks to Mr. Gore for continuing to be the voice of reason.

    • U.S. Would Not Avoid Draft

According to former Marine Colonel Werner, with our military stretched so thin and expanding into other areas we will not be able to avoid a draft. Politicians may not be talking about this, but I believe it will come to pass in the next four years if we continue on the path we are on. That is why I am leary of Clinton, Obama, and McCain (though moreso about McCain) because even though Clinton and Obama have stated they want to drawdown troops from Iraq they have not pledged that we will not get involved elsewhere in the Middle East. Matter of fact, on Obama's website it explicity states what a "great friend" he is to Israel and he defends their right to defend themselves "as they see fit." Does that mean nuclear? He even voted for Bush's Syria Accountabiility Act, and Bush is now ramping that up. Now, does that mean expanding this war to Iran or Syria? This is also why I get frustrated watching people get all googly eyed at Obama speeches and not asking the hard questions of either of them. I already know what we would get with McCain and that is why I would never vote for him. However, with Clinton and Obama all we get are vague answers and no discussion on this issue and I would rather have the truth than vague roundabout answers. With my own son turning 18 within the next couple years, I will be damned if I will hand him over to anyone to fight an illegal war for corporate America or for any other country just because the "president" sending him is bound to a lobby and "is a great friend of Israel" or that other country. According to former Marine Colonel Werner, with our military stretched so thin and expanding into other areas we will not be able to a... more

    • I'm leaning towards John Edwards

And basically there are two main reasons currently why:// I like his stance regarding the climate crisis, and I like that he seems genuine regarding his concern for working Americans and lifting up the lower and middle classes. However, I would like to hear him state (unless he did and I missed it) that he would do more to rescind the Patriot Act and do away with unitary executive power. I also have to read up more on his healthcare plan as I am for single payer, but am willing to look at other plans that hopefully bring competition to lower costs without compromising quality. And I state this as someone who is down on the political system as a whole but realizes that I must still do my duty and vote and also hope. Therefore, at this point I am leaning towards John Edwards, though I am also very impressed with Dennis Kucinich and his courage in standing up for impeachment and his views on trade. The next couple of months leading into the spring will be the deciding factor for me, and also the climate change presidential forum Mr. Gore is putting together in NH next month that I am really looking forward to. And just to explain, even though I am leaning towards John Edwards in this election cycle, Al Gore will always be in my heart and have my full support in whatever he does. So if you are leaning now towards one particular candidate, let's discuss why here and what you want from them. I think it's time they heard us.
